I tried giving my son some rice cereal when I was nursing to try and get him to sleep longer, BELEIVE ME dont try it, it caused nothing but a lng night of crying and no sleep for both me and my son. What I do suggest is pumping after you nurse and then next time you nurse give him the supply you have pumped from the previous feeding to top him off. This did work for me when I could keep him awake long enough to eat it!

I started both my daughters on soilds at 10 weeks, only give them tastes so it gets them use to different flavours. My 1st daughters 4 years now and shes was fine and my 2nd daughter is 11 weeks now and she enjoys its. You no your own baby as long as its just a taste each day should be ok. When my 1st daughter was born the age was 3 months when you could put them on soilds, dont no why its changed that was only 4 years ago.

My doctor said weight and digestion plays a big part in it. My baby is 14 lb.s and 15 oz. so she said we could start him in a few weeks if he didn't have acid reflux issues. She wants him to be a solid 15 lbs. before starting. She said that if he isn't fussy after eating and his reflux appears better that he could start then. She also said to give half the amount he gets at a feeding (one breast in my case) and then give him a little. A friend of mine even said it took a few weeks before her son got the hang of eating it.

Any guesses as to why he's still nursing so often still? How's his weight? Is he emptying each breast each time? You may want to slowly try to increase the interval, even just by 5 minutes a day. This will help you to get the rest you need, which helps you to be able to produce more milk. I had to do that for my first babe. She was probably the most challenging babe there ever was, would cry every feeding for at least 30 mins. I even tried switching to bottle but it was even worse. So, I did try to offer her rice cereal at 3 months. Doc said it was ok. Although, she did get allergic to the stuff so we had to stop and restart at 6 months. I think like many things, there's mixed opinion. I don't think it's that big a deal to try now, though, if you really think it's necessary after all else fails for extending the feeding intervals. Good luck! Oh yeah, my doc did say to offer the cereal after the feeding, not the other way around. Babe should definately still be getting mostly breastmilk at this age.

Too soon. My pediatrician said not until at least 6 months. Some people's doctors give the green light at 4 months. Rice cereal is essentially empty calories. Your milk has everything he needs.

Quoting Tracy:

Ive also been considering starting some rice cereal.
Our son will be 12wks on tues, he suffers bad with reflux and wind pain so Im thinking some cereal may help?
I hadnt heard of holding out breast fed babies longer either.

They have formula that has rice starch in it. No need to start cereal yet.

My daughter's pediatrician told me that babys' digestive system are not ready to handle "solid" foods until at east 4 months.

It is recommended NOT to feed baby cereal or foods until 6 months of age if you are breastfeeding. Formula fed babies start at 4 months old. I would suggest not too if I were you...
