Hi I have a son who just turned 1 on Feb. 15th, and he is only saying mama, mom, and ma other that that he does not say much he just babbles. I was worried so I had early intervention come out and they said that he is fine. he understands a lot of things...he gets the ball, his cup, gives kisses.etc...
Are there other babies not really talking or should I still be worried?

I don't think its anything to worry about. My 4 year old was way advance for her age speaking in full sentences by one years old, singing alphabets, other nursery rhymes etc by 10months and was running around the house at 9months old(first steps at 7months). My now 14 month old has a vocabulary from 14-20words. She started walking entirely on her own the day after thanksgiving (first steps at 10months) said her first word at 5months and yet the doctor said she is very advance compared to other babies. All babies develope differently and honestly I dont think you have much to worry about considering your baby clearly responds to what you say and do. I do see that this has alot to do with me being a stay at home mom the first year with my first child to only being a stay at home mom for the first 3 months with my 2nd child.

My son says mum mum but only if he wants something! Mostly it's just dad dad, apparently dad is easier to say than mum. Girls generally talk before boys (go figure!!) and they find it easier, boys are generally slower to develop in more areas but usually get it 'right' faster than girls, this continues throughout life too! Don't feel discouraged or get worried tho he will learn at his own pace and its always a good sign that hes babbling and "talking" his own language a lot and that he understands what your saying.

my son just turned 1 on Feb.2 and he is saying goal (my family is a big soccer fan so yea lol), he hums songs, says bye bye, mama, and he talks in his own language which I don't understand but I know he understands what I or my husband or family tell him. He is like a sponge! but don't worry all kids learn faster than others. just take one step at a time =0]

That sounds good!! I heard that they understand things before they can voice them. My son is 13 months and says mama, dada, Heidi (dog's name) and ahhh...trying to get him to say 'up'. And he babbles...alot!

My daughter turned 1 on Feb 6. She is pretty much doing the same thing. (Ma, Da Da, She even calls my mom by her name (Donna). Don't worry about it. In due time we're going to be telling them to "stop talking". lol. Give them time to come into their own. It will be fine.

My wee girl says the same as what most others seem to be saying: Mama, Dada, Nana, uh-oh and 'wow'! There are heaps of babbles which I'm sure will turn into something eventually. She was 1 on Feb 9th.

Each child is so different though. I used to compare my daughter a lot to her peers but have stopped because it's not fair. She doesn't roll, walk, crawl, try to sit up etc. Her mobility is poor in comparison (although I'm not comparing!). I was worried but having had her checked, I know it is simply how she is. She's going to do it all in her own good time and meanwhile, I can sit back as I don't have anyone to run after yet!! Got to look at the positives of these things ;)

PS: I don't actually ever get the chance to sit back really!

my lil one says, mama, dada, num nums (for snacks), more, please, thank you (sometimes), "yaayyy"!!!, and "i did it". I blame the "I did it" on Dora the Explorer! I don't really think it's so much about what they're saying but what they can understand at this age. I know some kids this age that are saying tons and I know some that are saying a couple words. As long as you know they understand you and you can understand what they want one way or another, then everything is great. I'm pretty sure we don't have to worry about their words so much until they're 2.

(is "Dora"), Mommy, book, bath, ball, bay (means "baby"), Paish (means "Paige" who is our neighbors baby), Kicken (means "Christian" who is the little boy I baby sit), push, Max (one of our cats), bear, light, and a few more that I know I'm forgetting...she also makes the sign for "milk" and "more".

My son Jonah says mamma, na for banana, and Hello clear as day and he can say dog not too clear but he says it he can also tell you what a few different animals say. he knows what a star is and a circle and he can show you where your nose is your mouth and teeth etc.. He gives really good kisses and can blow some really good bubbles in the water, his favorite. I think that is pretty darn good for one. Although he isnt walking yet. Every baby grows at different rates and they focus on different things at different times. I think my son may says more then most one year olds that I have met, but thats just what he is focusing on right now. I think you have nothing to worry about sounds like your son is right on track. No one looks at you when you are all grown up and says wow you must have not said your first word till you were 3, or you must have not walked till you were two. Haha so I think there is nothing to worry about . He will say more when he is ready. In the mean time I would just embrace all the other great things he is doing. Oh and one thing I would though is read to him a lot it helps I think. We read multiple books a day My son loves books!

My daughter was 1 on Feb 17th. She says quite alot of words.

Mama, Dada, Tayah (auntie), Fish, Hidey, Hiya, TicToc, Bye, Nice, Nanan, Aww, O Oh, there may be more.

She understands alot, and has just learned to blow kisses (too cute)
My friend had her little one on the same date and he says just Mama and Dada.

Every child devolps differently. My daughter is quite forward with talking and understanding but at 13months is still crawling, didnt crawl till around 8-9months. Yet my friends child was crawling at around 6months and walking at 8.

Honey, I wouldnt worry about it. Every child is different, he is only one after all! Some kids arent even walking at one! The more you teach him and use other words around him the faster he will pick up on them. If your son knows who mama is and is aware of all the things you listed then I would say he is more than adequate! You even got a pros opinion saying he is fine, so stop being so critical!

My daughter will be 14 months on the 6th and she says "Nice Doggy" all the time because we've got 3 dogs and we're teaching her gentle hands, not to hit them so we say "Nice Doggy." Although when she says it's more "nas dge". She also says Nana, Mommy, Thanks, Bless You (Blsss youuu), and Up. It scares me of how aware of everything she truely is.

My babygirl is 13 months old. She mostly babbles. She does say ahh-ee for daddy, and aah for mama. Otherwise she is very clear in her communication, and I know the rest will come as she is ready for it. Myself, I was about 3 years old (so I have been told) before I spoke. Didn't care to do it, cos my mom understood anyway. But I knew the words. So take it easy, things come as the child is ready. Never meassure your childs developement with other children. No 2 children are alike!

Words in context: dada, door, meow, *pant pant* (for dog), *tongue in and out* for lizard, her big one is door though, she points to every door everywhere and says DOOR DOOR. It's really funny. That, and Dah for car. it's interesting walking through a car park, like car overload.

She tends more to make sounds with the right number of sylables for the word, but doesn't have the motor skills to shape the words yet. Like I'll say aeroplane if we hear one and she'll say "da da da".

I'm teaching her sign language and that is really helpful until she can speak properly. She can ask for water, milk, food, dolly, more, she says cold if her water is cold, very cute, and handy. It takes her about a week to really get a sign down.

She seems to have quite good comprehension though, understands simple instructions like " put the peg in the peg bag please" or "can I please have that?" They understand alot, even the quiet ones.

at 13 months my son is saying 'ga' which means cat - but EVERYTHING is 'ga' - had an interseting walk along the beach the other day with him saying 'ga' all the time and me saying 'no - thats a dog.'!

He 'says' mama and dada but hasn't yet associated them with me and DH, so they are just generally in with the rest of his copious babbling.

When I was working in a nursery we had a 3 year old who wouldn't talk at all, but used plenty of non verbale communication. His mum was really worried but i said that once he started talking she'd wish he hadn't, and right enough 6 months or so later she said that sometimes she wished he'd shut up :)

My Rose turned one on Feb 2 and is a major chatterbox like her mother...lol. She says mama, daddy, nana, cup, baby, hi, bye...and also signs for "more" "milk" "book" and "hug". She babbles constantly and knows most of the hand motions to Itsy bitsy spider and the sign language version of Twinkle Twinkle. We have been going to a baby story hour at the library since she was five months old and I think that has made a huge difference in her vocabulary...they also had a baby sign language class that we attended.

The sweetest thing she does is making a little singing noise in her throat when she wants music..she also does this at church when the choir sings... The choir director is ready to recruit her now..lol

She is, however , not walking yet, and was slow to crawl...and as advanced as she is verbally, there are folks that still want to act like I should be worried about that...please. Don't worry about your son.....I am sure he is fine...they all catch up sooner or later, and different skills and strengths...

It sounds like you have nothing to worry about. My son hasn't started saying anything more then da or dadda. But he also has had numerous ear infections, and when he doesn't have ear infections he still has junk built up behind his ears. We are scheduled to have ear tubes in April so hopefully that will help, at least the doctor says it should. He was supposed to have his surgery yesterday, but he was sick with an ear infection. But I think he understands and we are trying to teach him some sign language.

My 13-month-old son says dada, mama, mom, up, happy, yay, Katie (his big sister), ba ba (for bottle or sippy), baby... I think that's about it. He's developed his own language. It's really cute to see the serious expression on his face while he's babbling nonsense. I will say he began speaking much later than my daughter did. She was a very early talker and was using full sentences by 15-18 months. Does that mean something is wrong with my son? No, he's just a different baby. He started walking at 9 months, my daughter didn't walk until 13 or 14 months.

Don't stress yourself about your little one hitting milestones or developing "right on schedule." Every baby is different. It may make you worry and want to compare to others if you think your baby is behind, but that won't change anything and it won't speed his development. If you're truly concerned, talk to your pediatrician for reassurance. Otherwise, I say celebrate your baby's achievemetns as they happen and don't sweat the small stuff.

My daughter was saying a lot more than this by 1 year and she was speaking full sentences by 18 months. lol, but I have also watched many, many kids who were all completely normal that could only say maybe 5 words by a year and a half. My ped has always told me that as long as they understand words don't be as concerned about talking late. My oldest had the vocab of a 3 or 4 year old at 18 months. My 2 girls then didn't speak at all until 2 - which freaked me out. My son who turned 1 on the 23rd only says mama, dada, no no no no no no, den (kind of like here - take this in Spanish), and wow (his word of the day today I've noticed). Once he said arriba, but I think that was because his sisters had played Dora one too many times that day. And once he said boobie as he went to nurse - proof I should call it nursing instead of boobie. LOL Every once in awhile he'll say up-uh - meaning up and sometimes, very rarely, he'll say dan do as he hands you something, which I'm assuming means thank you, usually he says den though when giving you something, though sometimes he says it when he wants you to give him something.

I wouldnt be worried...my son was born the same day and he has a great vocab. His pedi said that he has the vocab that he does because i talk "regular" to him. I dont do baby talk. Although he cant respond back I conversate with him as if he can. I also read a lot of books to him. If I were you I would start talking to him as if you are looking for a response. dedcribe everything that you are doing, like if you are putting on his shirt or tying his shoe or getting his cup etc. You will see a drastic change in his vocab.
