My son is 5 weeks old today. About a week ago, he stopped napping unless he is being held. There are so many years between my children, I dont remember if my first son went through this. He sleeps fine at night but this makes it impossible to get anything done

my baby girl started to do that, but i gave her a nice & warm bath, i have also used the shower, both work the same, but after the bath i moisturize her and wrap her up really good, i also put a little bed side heater on her. i have also put a sweater of mine near her so she could smell me. but anyways, the heat and the tightness of the blanket put her right to sleep

Seems like we're all in this together!!!!

I recently bought a Maya-Wrap (baby sling) and at least I can have the use of my hands again while my little one snuggles close to me and gets some rest.

I'm sure we won't have to hold our babies forever to get them to sleep during the day.  And as frustrating as it is right now, we might miss this one day.

Hi Ladies!! Same problems being faced here.....can't offer any help, except keep trying! My daughter refuses to sleep anywhere but someone's arms during the day, which is frustrating. Once she soothes in my arms, I try to put her in her cot to settle off to sleep; once she starts to cry I try to soothe her in the cot but if she doesn't settle I pick her up again and we start the whole thing over.

Sometimes I'll luck out and she'll nap for about an hour, but more often than not, she'll only cat nap for about 20 mins. Usually she'll settle in the cot for a good 3 hrs sleep around 1400 hours but somedays she won't.

Honestly, I've given up worrying about the housework and everything else I'd like to get done during the day - I need her settled and sleeping to maintain my sanity. The housework will always be there and as long as I can find enough time to grab a quick shower and wash essential clothes and dishes and eat decent meals - I'm not going to fuss over it.

It's my understanding that the settling will improve over the next couple of weeks - apparently it peaks around 6 weeks and then improves in leaps and bounds from 8 weeks on.

Good Luck!!

My son makes 6 weeks on Tuesday, and he is EXACTLY the same way! During the day he goes crazy if I put him down--even as far as crying so hard he doesn't breathe for a few seconds--but at night he does fine sleeping. I've been trying to ween him off of me so I can actually get some stuff done around the house, but it's been hard because I'm not really a fan of the "cry it out" concept...at least not at his young age. I've found that the swing works really well (only AFTER I get him to sleep), and swaddling is amazing. Target has these swaddlers that make it so easy, and they have velcro so that the swaddle won't come loose. He seems to do okay with it, but he always inevitably wakes up after 30 - 40 minutes. If he's just grunting and moaning, I'll leave him and he'll start to get back to sleep, but if he's really throwing out, I'll pick him up, put him back to sleep, and then put him down. It's going to take a while, I can tell, but I'm hoping that slowly but surely I might be able to ween him off of having to be near me to sleep, and that this slow weening might prevent a serious cry it out situation. Good luck with it! It's nice to know that other mommies are having similar issues with their little babes...

my daughter was born feb 3....we went through the very same thing...accompanied with screaming for hours on end the doctor just liked to call it colic and send us out the door...we have since switched doctors and formula..the screaming has stopped but we still were lacking in the nap time dept....and she needs to be held all day long it seems...all i can say is that with each day thats passes, it is getting better and better...she has been a great night sleeper since day one, but never use to sleep a wink other than that...if she fell asleep in my arms she would wake the second you try to put her down...we now get at least one good nap in the morn about an hour long and one in the afternoon...its frustrating as heck...havin a needy baby...but i am a believer that they are that way for a reason..patience and understanding are great tools...put yourself in her shoes...how would you feel to be ripped from the only home you've ever known that was safe, dark, quiet, cozy....and thrust into this huge, strange, loud, bright unknown place....you'd probably be a little scared as well... as far as getting anything done..ask for help...have someone come sit with him while you do some things...or try the baby carrier so the baby is still with you and happy and you still have 2 hands free...myself...i just became really good at doing things one handed.  :) ...time will cure...hang in there...

My son is now 6 weeks and i have found that using a snuglie to carry him in allows me to get a few things done. He gets the sleep that he needs and also lets me get dishes done. I have even used this so we can both get a nap in.

Mine too! She's at the 5 week mark as well (born on 2/21) and wants to be held to get to sleep. Fusses the minute I put her down. Sometimes she does this at night as well!!!!

My pediatrician said that she should begin to learn to self-soothe. I agree, but this seems really young for her to "cry" herself to sleep. I'm not a huge fan of Ferber-izing anyway, so does anyone hve any advice?

Im having the same problem. My son will only sleep during the day if I am holding him so I never get the extra sleep or anything done during the day either. I read somewhere that its because they havent gotten used to being separate from your body yet and they feel safe. Unfortunately i dont have advice but I do understand how what your going through :)
