Would you get the vaccine for your child?

We will be flying to visit some family after Christmas and are not sure if we should get the H1N1 vaccine for our ten month old daughter. We asked her doctor what he thought about it and he said that even though the peak of the H1N1 season is over we should still do it. What makes me question it though is the way that he said it. He was not convincing or enthusiastic about it at all so I think he has to tell us that. We are having a hard time making the decision and would like some opinions. What would you do? If you already got one for your child, what happened?

True most will be fine with the vaccine. But I just don't find it neccessary. Our daughter is on a graduated vaccine schedule and we got her the tradtional flu shot but decided against the H1N1. There has been a lot of hype about this flu but so far it has turned out to be just that. Hype. The flu itself is very contageous but doesn't live outside the human body long (like seconds) and you have to directly come into contact with someone who has it. It's easy to buy into the hysteria and get all worked up but unless your child has respitory problems, or immunity problems, I just personally don't feel it's neccessary. Taking precautions such as sanitizing hands frequently, not touching the mouth or nose, taking a D3 supplement and zinc (found in YoBaby yogurt) and a saline mist in the nostrils two to three times a day durning flu season can ward off most bugs! Stay healthy!

My child got sick but it only lasted for the rest of the day.We just had to wash alot of towels lol. It wasnt fun but it was ok and we gave her some pediasure or something like that instead of formula it was alright. Im almost confident she wont get it for the rest of the season. It was just a mild case of the flu but it was better than her getting it really really bad for days so Id get it for her.

My daughter got the shot. The doctor strongly recomended me getting the shot for my daughter due to her other health problems. I did some research on it, and decided that getting her the shot was the best decission for her. She didn't have any side effects from the shot. She was never uncomfortable after the shot, and she's been healty this winter...But it's totally up to you to make the call. Talk to you doctor about it. Ask you doctor for their opinion on the shot, and due some research!

My three daughters aged (7, 4 & 10 months) are due to get theirs the beginning of January, my nephew is 2 and he had the shot a few months back & he had no side effects. I am hoping that it will be the same for my three children but still not fully sure whether or not to get it done.

I debated this back and forth for a couple of weeks before actually taking my daughter to get it. At first i said no, i never get a regular flu shot why would i get this one! My husband didn't want to and since i couldn't decide, i went with his decision. Then a few days later a bunch of people at his work were off sick with a flu, plus his job requires him to go in and out of business all day including hospitals, we were worried about him bringing something home! so we took her to get it! She had no side effects what so ever! Not even a fever which apparently is pretty common! Now that the media has died down about it i wonder if i did it out of fear and if it was necessary but i really did feel relieved after she got it, and a month later when my husband got sick with the flu, i definately felt better knowing that she had the shot. We don't know if he had H1N1 but she didn't catch anything so who knows!! I dont tell anyone that i think they should or shouldn't get it but i feel you just gotta do your own research learn what you can, and trust yourself as a mom!

I gave the H1N1 and the regular flu vaccines to all 3 of my kids and thank god because the oldest and the 10 month old just came down with something a few days ago and it only lasted for not even 24 hours with them. I think if i hadnt they would have gotten it worse!

I still hadn't decided if I was going to get the vaccination for H1n1 when my daughter actually got H1N1. She was 8 months old and we are assuming she got it from daycare, but my husband and I are both elementary school teachers so we could have also carried it home to her. She was very sick for 1 day. She did get up to a 104.3 fever for a couple of hours and the dr's ran a million tests which was the worst part for her. They didn't even run a flu test until we have been at the office for 3 hours. They said she is the youngest case in our area (a prize she would have rather not won :)) They put her on Tamiflu and by the next day she didn't even have a fever at all. No coughing, sneezing, (other than from her asthma), runny nose nothing. She was playing, eating, and acting perfectly normal. It was one scary day but I have friends whose kids were mildly sick for weeks from the vaccine.
I will not get the vaccine for her next year for whatever flu is out there. I feel like their tiny systems are inadated with so much already and the flu really wasn't that bad. We obviously still kept her out of daycare for the dr. reccomended 5 days but she would have been fine to go back on day 2. Neither my husband and I have ever had a flu shot. This is just my experience and you can decide for yourself what is the best for your kids!!! :)

I got the vaccine for my daughter the same day i got her second flu shot ( children under the age of 2 have to get two flu shots one month apart and two swine shots one month apart). For the first she she cried out once and for the second shot she laughed (i am not even joking!). after that we went to burger king and played in the play area and i never had a problem with any listed side effect. i am not saying either way you should or shouldnt but at least ask people who are going to come in contact with her to get it.

My daughter is 10 months old and our doctor thought she should have it. We choose not to get it. The shot is new and they don't enough of the long term side effects or anything and that to me was a bigger concern than anything else especially since i'm disabled myself. Good luck with your decision though.

I am not getting one for anyone in my family. In fact, both my doctor and my pediatrician told me to NOT get it. The H1N1 "vacine" is immune to lawsuits, a fact that is not widespread. That means, that if you or a family member has an adverse effect to the vacine, then you cannot sue the U.S. Government (they own all the vacines).

I also think it was developed too quickly and in my experience a "quick fix" never really fixes anything...

I got it for my daughter, they have to have two doses though, a month apart. Nothing happened with her, i am thankful for that and she hasnt been sick. I would do it, especially if you are flying!

I'm not gettin the H1N1 shot for my 10.5 month old son. Some doctors say to get it and some would never recommend it, so i believe it's your own personal decision. I dont think its been tested long enough, and their has been ppl that have died from the actual vaccine. Good luck wit ur choice

We go back tomorrow to get Livi's second dose. The first one went fine and she had no side effects and has been her normal active and healthy self. My doctor made me feel at ease about her getting the shot because, like most, I was scared to let her get it.

I am also flying after Christmas and I debated getting them. I finally decided to get the seasonal about November. I called my doc's office and they said they were out and wont be getting anymore. If your child hasn't gotten it yet, he should be fine. Fruits and vegitables high in Zinc before and after the plane ride. And if your daughter got the seasonal shot, that will help against H1N1 in that it will prime their immune system against any infection and help to have a quicker recovery time. I also take the statistics with a little grain of salt. Tamiflu is the most potent anti-flu drug available, but in order to recieve it dr's have to diagnose H1N1. I think they are mis-diagnosing in order to get people a drug they need.

We don't follow the traditional vaccination shedule for our son. We space out vaccines and only get one at a time. I struggled with the H1N1 vaccine as well as seasonal flu. After a good friend's two children got H1N1 and were VERY ill I decided to get the vaccine. My friend doesn't get her children vaccinated for flu and stronly advised parents get the vaccine after going through the illness with her children. I pushed back the other vaccine that was due that month and my son had no side effects from it. It's a tough decision. From what I undrestand the vaccine takes about two weeks to be effective.

Quoting Jamillah:

After reading the story about the cheerleader, I refuse. In case you don't know a professional cheerleader got the shot & she's deformed. I'm not feeling the shot. I wouldn't if I was you.

it was not the H1N1 shot that she had the reaction to, it was the seasonal flu shot....and it is a rear thing that happens.  then again we could be talking about two diff. people.   both of my kids have had their 1st dose and have had not side effects  their are 3 and 10 months

Planes are such a germ breeding ground! With so many people visiting us right after spending hours on a plane during the holidays, we had to really consider the H1N1 shot at least. After waiting some time to see if there were any immediate side affects with the vaccine, and seeing how bad the virus was on small children (99% of the ICU beds at our city's Children's hospital were full of H1N1 complications), and talking with my doctor, we decided to go ahead with the shot for my 10 month old daughter and myself. She had her first shot 2.5 weeks ago and no complications at all. I was the that felt the sucker punch in my arm and was tired for two days, lol!

My daughter was 9 months when she got hers. No side affects and she usually runs a fever after every shot she gets but nothing. I did the same thing too, was super nervous about getting the shot for her and finally decided in the end it would be best for her especially if she was going to be out and about everywhere. In the end only you can make the decision and you will now what to do. Go with your gut it's always right! Good luck!

My daughter had her H1N1 shot and so far so good. She had her first dose at 8 months and then her second dose at 9 months. I definantly wanted to get my daughter vaccinated. I didn't want to risk anything. My 5 year old son also had one as well as my husband and me. I would do it to be on the safe side, but remember you are the Mom and only you know and can decide.

yes! my doctor said that its required by the state( at least in pa) that all babies 6mos+ need it! my son got it and is fine, no reaction or anything, just keep an eye on her for reactions! when u get the shot they ( the doctor)should give u papers with what to look for. if not ask for them. the parent(s) dont need it. but u can get it if u want to be safe.

I got both of my girls (4 1/2 years, and 10 months) the shot. I'm not usually a fan of flu shots, but the H1N1 had me a little scared so I talked to two of the doctors in the practice and they both highly recommended it and said they had gotten it fir their own kids. We had no side affects at all not even soreness. I also asked how bad it would be if my little one got H1N1 and the doctor told me that the little babies that are getting H1N1 are very very sick little babies.

My 10 month old has had the first shot (small children get 2 half-doses), but we have yet to go back to get the second. He has had colds constantly ever since, and he should be in good health to get the shot.

i got my daughters her done on the 4th of this month december and she did great had no side effects ahe wasnt sore didnt run a fever didmt throw up nothing. i would suggest getting it. i debated my self for like 3 months before giving it to my daughter then i talked to my doctor about it and she told me that she gave it to her kids. and they all did fine. so i think you should do but remeber just cause my daughter did good doesnt mean yours is. all babies have different symptons and health issues. my daughter has no health problems. so if your daughter does have health problems i would really do some looking around and maybe call a different dr offices to aske opinions... i hope this helps

Both of my kids got it. No side effects, no problems at all. I'm very glad they got it. I did research and weighed the pros and cons and for my family it was absolutely the right thing to do for my family. Understand that I am asthmatic and we have yet to know if that has been passed down to my children. Flu is very dangerous in my house. There are risks with every vaccine and medicine as there are for not using them. So you have to choose which risk is the worst for you. I saw that cheerleader story. There is some debate that it is a hoax. I don't know if it is or not. I do know that if it is for real it is a very very rare reaction. I'll give you this link http://www.efitnessnow.com/news/2009/10/... there's a much better video on youtube but we're not supposed to be posting videos so you'll have to check it out for yourself if you want to. My cousin is a nurse and for at least where I live she's been seeing a lot of small children/ babies on ventilators from h1n1 complications. That was enough for me.

emily, thank u very much for posting that question...i'm exactly in the same situation, deciding whether or not to vaccinate my now 10 mths old before we go visit family abroad. ppl are either STRONGLY for or STRONGLY against vaccinating, so that's really confusing for me...i still don't know what to do..

jamillah, i haven't heard about that cheerleader. where was that and what exactly happened? can u post a link or sthg regarding that story...thnx
