Tina - My son is long and lean, and he had trouble gaining weight for a while, too. At some point I realized that a lot of baby table food is what we adult would use to diet -- it's all low cal fruits and veggies. Kelly Mom (http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/vitami...) has a calorie chart, and I used that to identify some high calorie foods for him. He gets a ton of avocados, sweet potatoes, apples, and bananas now and is gaining weight well again. He's still really active and lean, but the ped is no longer concerned. Maybe that will help you, too. Good luck!

christina, the same thing happend to my daughter!
she's 10 months and weights 17.5lbs, but is 29.5 inches long. she's ALWAYS been in the 90th percentile for both, but now she's in the 12th percentile for weight! the doc said no big deal though since she's very active and has been crawling/cruising for a few months now.
also, i'm only 4'11" and 110 lbs and her father is under 6' muscular, but lean. i don't imagine she'll ever be back in the 90th percentile for weight or that she'll stay in the 90th percentile for height much longer!

lol everyone stop freaking out about the 5lb baby... im SURE she meant 15... i dont even think a 10 month old would be alive or unhospitalized at 5lbs.

Oh my! I am sure she had to have meant 15. If not, if your doc is saying supplement! Then get on that. Thats a very unhealthy weight for a 9 months old. Holy moses!

I hope Lisa meant 15 lbs not 5 because 5 is not healthy at all.
My sweetie is 16.2 lbs and 28 inches.

My son is also active, so that's what I thought, too, but thanks for bringing that into perspective Melinda. My daughter is 3 and suffers from VUR, and they did tell me that is is hereditary and my son will have to get tested eventually, so maybe that very well could be a cause for my son, I will have to look into it.

That is very small for a 9 month old. My son will be 10 months on the 24th and had problems gaining weight. Now he's 17 1/2 lbs and his weight dropped to the 5th percentile. Is she moving around a lot? Thats what I figured happened to joey, he's a very active baby so he burns a lot of calories off.

I was very relieved to come across this posting because the doctors have been very concerned about my 10 month olds weight, She is currently 13 pounds 15 ounces and 25 inches long. They are mainly concerned because she was 13lbs 12 oz at 5 months.
We went through blood work and urine tests and found out that she has VUR (which is where the urine travels from the bladder back into the kidneys). Apparently this condition causes failure to thrive.
She did not show any symptoms, and has never had a UTI.
If anyone is very concerned about their child's weight...the best thing to do is to ask the doctor to run tests to eliminate the possibility of anything being seriously wrong.
We also were advised to use "Duocal" by a nutritionist. It is a powder that you can buy from a medical supplier online that adds fatty calories to their food...without changing the taste, smell, or texture. I think it has really made a difference.

Hope this helps!

I have somewhat the same problem w/my son, but he's bigger than your daughter and because he's been staying on the same growing curve, the dr.'s not too concerned about him, but he's only in the 13th percentile for wgt. for his age. He weighed 18 lbs. at his last check-up, last mth. and he too is my 2nd. My daughter is 3 and only weighs 30 lbs. and she is about 39 in. Just keep doing what you're doing.

hello there!! My daughter is 14.3 lbs!26 inches

we run testtttt lots of them, so far everything is fine! But she doesn't eat much, she drinks 3 bottles a day max 500ml iF I am lucky. I give her Nutragadem once a day is like a soya milk, very expensive, with lots of nutrients, and she has 3 meals a day,I make her own food but now she is starting to dislike it and rather eat what we eat! I add butter or olive oil for extra calories to food and milk + Polycose which is a speacial sugar for calories as well...all this under Drs suppervision or permision! She puts on weight very slowly.Plus she was very Her Dr said stop worring so I am trying! She is very active and clever as well :-)

My daughter is 17 lbs 7 oz (as of a few weeks ago). I'm a small person and my husband isn't real tall, either so we're not concerned. She's healthy and that's what matters!

Wow she is very small my daughter is 21lbs 5 oz. But she is on the large end of the spectrum. My nephew was very tiny like this. He was a very active baby and below the charts for ht/wt but perfectly healthy. Every person and every baby is different. Nephew is now a young boy and normal height and weight.

my daughter is 15lbs and 26inch long at 9 months. She is in the 5% tile of the group and I keep getting told she is under weight. I do what i can and feed her lots, even cereal in a bottle. She is growing very slow and she was 5 weeks early. She has NO teeth, but is very active. Eats everything in site, I guess she will grow at her own time..

Our daughter will be 10months tomorrow and she is just over 17 lbs. Which is like 10th percentile! But she is in the 90th percentile for her length! She has weighed the same amount for over 4 months now! I voiced my concern to her dr. and she asked me what all she ate in a day...which is A LOT! She said that she isn't worried at all! She may be just petit. She told me that I am doing everything that I can! What worries me is that when she was born she weighed 7lbs and 13oz got big really fast was all the way up to the 90th percentile for her weight (has always been 90th for her length) and now has dropped all the way down to like the 10th! I really trust her dr. and she said that it is ok and she's not worried so I try not to! She said that she may just hit a major growth spurt. Some kids do.

I think the person with the 5lbs baby really needs to seek medical attention! I don't know how a baby that small is thriving! Hopefully they ment 15lbs and 11oz!! Fingers crossed!

Taylor wont sleep 13hours at a time and i had to start waking her to feed her... she is now 9.5months and only weighs 13lbs but there isnt nothing wrong with her.... her DR is reallly worried but as a mom i feel there is nothing wrong.. she is meeting all her milestones at least 2 weeks ahead... and she is REALLY smart... We have a appointment on dec 15th with the GI spealicst (which i think is a waste of time) but i would rather waste time than something be wrong and not take her... my kids eats more than my 16month old lil cuz... and as i said im not worried at all but the DR is .....

My LO is almost 10 months and he weighs just under 18lbs. Our Dr. Isn't concerned at all, she doesn't feel the need for us to supplement. He sleeps all night which is a good sign that he is full. I wouldn't worry about too much.

5 lbs is very underweight for that age and I would seek medical help.

We are having the same issue with our lil girl. My girls are tiny to begin with. Doctor wants me to put her on formula but I am just trying to increase food intake and she nurses every hr already. She dislikes the baby jar food so that doesnt work. I think follow your instincts if your baby is happy and acts healthy they are good :)

My daughter is 9 1/2 months and is just over 17 pounds, the doctor says she is perfectly healthy adn just to let her eat when ever she wants because she will tell me when she isnt hungry. If your little one isnt overly cranky and doesnt seem to be starving then i wouldnt worry. I also say dont let the doctors get you overly worried because i have had different opinions from different doctors and have realised that it all depends on the baby.

My daughter is 9 1/2 months old. She currently weighs 5 lb 11 oz and is 27 3/4 in long. She is a great eater. We have made our own baby food from the beginning so she is still getting lots of fruits and veggies along with 6-8 nursings a day. We also give her 2 snacks a day between her 3 meals. Our pediatrician seems very worried and told us we need to start supplementing with formula and she also has had us go through blood work to check her thyroid, kindey, and white blood count. I feel like she is a healthy, active little girl. I'm concerned that we are going through things that are unneccesary....any suggestions

Have you tried adding butter and cream to her meals. My doctor suggested this (advice from a nutritionist), my little guy is very lean 17 lbs 68 cm long (almost 10 months old). He eats 3 meals a day, plus a snack; drinks 4 - 5-7 oz bottles a day. He is a very active child but my doctor wanted to "fatten" him a bit just so he has some baby fat reserve if he ever got sick.
He won't eat anymore but the added butter/cream has increased calories without increasing food amount. Hope this helps :)

My daughter is almost 10 months old, and she weighs 14 pounds even. She's 26.5 inches longs. She was only 4.14 pounds when she was born, so we started out small. She also eats like crazy, but is so active, that she hasn't gained a lot of weight. The doctors aren't concerned, because we are very small parents. I'm only 4ft 11in, so they say she'll just be a peanut. Sounds to me like you just have a small baby.
