Infant Potty training

My husband’s Aunt introduced infant potty training to us. I barrowed the book on infant potty training and my daughter, almost 12 weeks has used the potty 5 times. I am really into wanting to do the infant potty training with her, but my husband doesn’t feel the need to do so. Therefore, it’s all to me.

Is anyone doing this? Any thoughts or tips?

To be honest with you I believe this whole infant potty training thing is ridiculous. Why don't you spend more time bonding with your baby by playing with them, reading to them, go for walks, join a Gymboree class...come on people...they are only infants! Don't you think your expecting to much too soon. Enjoy them while they are at this stage.

I have a friend that said that her parents did it with her, and she was completely potty trained by 6 months, when she started crawling. She's in her 50s now, and she's not sure how they did it, but apparently it can work!

I've heard it can work, but I haven't tried it. If she is doing it though, it could really save on time and money in the long run. At this point it is probably an accident (she was going to do it in her diaper anyhow...) but if she realizes it works she should gradually lean towards toilet over diaper just for the sake of comfort if nothing else.

My BFF does it with her daughter. She started at 4 months. I think if you have the time, go ahead and do it. Since I will be going back to work, I won't be able to do it.

Think about it, there are people all over the world who can't afford to buy pampers, so they have to teach their babies how to use the potty from early on.

Yey! I'm not the only one!
I'm starting potty training my 17 month old AND my 8 week old. I accidentally checked out a book on infant potty training by mistake and thought it made total sense. You really can tell when she's going to go. So far we get the timing right about three times a day (and I just started three days ago). Keeping an eye on both kids to figure out when they need to go can be pretty hard, but I think I'm going to set a timer... after keeping a log of their actions each day I think I've got their habits (at least somewhat) figured out.

Good Luck!

Thank you for your response…. Personally, I am really into Infant potty training after reading the book. It’s not for everyone and I am not against allowing your child to let you know when they are ready to break away from diapers.

Some background info for those who have not heard of infant potty training.

Infant potty training for me is an art and a special connection between baby and parent(s)/care giver. It is practiced worldwide; however United States is new to it. The reason not many are familiar with the term. It is said that between 1-6 months is best to start. The background to infant potty training is… Our babies know when they need to go. Have you ever looked at your babies face when they are going potty? You can actually see them push. My daughter will stop everything she is doing and start to push and make noises and faces. This is how I know when to put her to her potty. It is said that babies that are not potty trained early on train themselves to use there dippers as their potty and ignore the feeling of needing to go. As time goes on they struggle with knowing the feeling of needing to go and have to learn how to hold it in. That’s why when we go to potty train our 2-3 year olds it’s more difficult for some. Infant potty training is a way to really learn your babies’ signs and get to know them on a different level. It takes dedication and patience. It’s really a preparation for early potty training.

The procedures: Once you have learned your babies potty signs you can take there diaper off and allow them to use a potty, toilet, or bowl by holding them over it until they can sit themselves. Make up some type of key word or sounds that they can associate potty time with. After a while, they will hold until given the release sound or word. This allows for early potty use. Infant potty training will cut down on diapers, reach a higher connection with baby, and assist in early potty training.

I think if it works for you, and she can give you toileting cues then go for it. It will probably make her more comfortable with toileting when she is older, just maybe try not to make it a full time thing.
I work in childcare and have a 9week old son, and 26month old stepson. and I think that the best way to toilet train is every nappy change talk to them about what they did, like, 'did you do a poo?... yes, you did do a poo" so they know the difference between a bowel movement and a wee. talking is the best key. but i think if this does work for you, and its not too much for you then go for it.

I've heard of that but I don't know anyone who's actually done it. I think it's way too young. I thought my 19 month old was ready so we went ahead with it, she was potty trained for 6 wks and then she completely regressed. I would just enjoy them as a baby and worry about potty training later.
