Hi,
My son will be 6 months old on August 15. He is 19lbs. 12oz. He was 29 inches long a couple weeks ago so I'm sure that he is longer now. I currently have him in a baby trend infant carrier. I just read the height/weight requires. He is still okay weight wise--it is 22lbs max. He is over on the height tho.--max is 28.5 in. I have a convertible car seat that can be rear facing for babies weighing 5-30lbs. The infant carrier is pretty small for him--it is hard to get him in and out of. A friend has an infant carrier that she said I can use (it has not expired yet) and it holds up to 30lbs. Should I use her infant carrier or go ahead and switch him to the convertible car seat? There are a couple reasons why I'm doubting switching him already--when I go grocery shopping, its nice to have him in the carrier. He is just starting to sit up and he is not very good at it yet so he probably wouldn't be able to sit in a cart. The only thing is on the rare occasion that he falls asleep I don't want to wake him, but 99% of the time he wakes up as soon as I put the carrier down anyhow. Any thoughts, comments, suggestions would be appreciated.

I switched mine at 5 months and she can barely sit up most stores have the carts with the baby seat in them and if not i just sit her in there and sit my purse behind her and strap her in and usually she just holds on and i have no problems

Also, at 6 months my daughter can sit up on her own for long periods. Highchairs and grocery carts are support enough for a supported sitter like her and him. Honestly, I am so relieved I don't have to carry her in the infant carrier anymore, it just added more weight to her already heavy self lol

I agree with Jessica M.'s suggestion. I've had a Sunshine Kids Radian 80 for nearly 3 years now and still haven't seen a car seat I like better. It's very streamlined and highly rated from a safety standpoint. Planning on buying another one for my second child.

We use the Graco My Ride 65 convertible seat. My daughter just turned 6 months old and is the same weight as your son. Its a very cushy comfortable seat and has the strap holes for shorter children. I am very satisfied with this seat. I picked it because it is so padded, great for long drives.
You wont have the little bucket anymore, but you will adapt. We just recently went out to eat and even though my baby cant quite sit on her own, she sat just fine in one of the highchairs.

I recommend switching him to the convertible. It won't be too much longer before he can sit up in a shopping cart, and in the meantime you might try wearing him in a pack. My first son loved to go shopping while I carried him in the baby bjorn, he could shop for hours that way! Good luck! And I recommend a Britax as a carseat, they are the best! A Boulevard or Marathon.

The car seat really depends on your car. I have a liberty and daddy has a crown Victoria. You would think that any car seat would fit either...wrong. We have a safety first that when you lay it down properly it fits only behind me in my car and we also have a graco my ride 65. It fits barely in his car but nicely in mine. I like the my ride because it goes rear facing to 40lbs then front to 65. The safety 1st alpha omega elite goes to 35lbs rear, then will go all the way to 100 as a booster. It is really hard because he is so big but he is sitting really well on his own due to using an exersaucer. You can really get more time out of the convertible seats since they allow for taller children. Plus our doc said we could turn him front facing at 9 months as long as he meets the car seat requirements. BTW my boy is 6 months and is 28 inches and 21.6 lbs. As long as your friends carrier would be good for your child's length I would go for it.

I just switched my 5 1/2 month old to a convertible car seat (Eddie Bauer 3 in 1) as he is just a couple ounces shy of the 22 lb mark. Going shopping I either put him in the cart with some towels behind him in to prop him up a bit, use the stroller or use my snuggli. Good luck

As long as you like your friends car seat and it's not over 6 yrs. old and it's never been in an accident, even a minor one, I'd do that if I were you. I can understand where you are coming from; I switched my 6 mth. old to a convertible car seat and he can't even sit up on his own yet, so if I take him anywhere, like the store, I have to bring him in, in a stroller or front carrier. Hope this helps.

i'm not a fan of borrowing carseats. but i can relate because my son is 20 lbs and will be 6 months on 08/04. we are actually investing in a sunshine kids radian xtsl tomorrow. i've been researching it for sometime now and if you go to www.elitecarseat.com they are on sale for 20% free shipping and no sales tax. i'd strongly suggest going to a store and FEELING the material of the different covers first. we almost got the black one and once we felt it we realized that would have been a huge mistake. yes, it's supposed to keep the child cooler but it's suuuuuuuper rough. it's like a heavy mesh feeling. so not pleasant for a baby.

also, you can keep the seat reaer-facing un to 45 pds and forward facing upto 80pds! thats great news for our little ones that aren't so little and for us moms who want our little ones to be rear-facing for as loooooong as possible.

the other cool side note is the design it super narrow so if you have 3 kids close in age you can actually put all 3 car seats side by side in the backseat! suuuuper rare option.

hope that helps :)

I would go ahead and make the switch. The weight/height limits on the car seat are very important to follow. As soon as you reach one of the limits you need to switch to the next size. And most grocery stores have the carrier built into the cart if he is not sitting up well yet. You could also consider putting him in a front carrier (Baby Bjorn or Ergo) while you are shopping and then you do not have to worry about finding the special carts at the grocery store.

Thanks, I did see at the grocery store today that they have carts with carriers attached. I'm sure it won't be long till he is sitting up on his on. It's just sad to be changing everything! I just got 6-12 month clothes out since he is growing so fast.

As long as he fits and he is at the recommended height and weight i say go for it it is great having the carrier however if you do have to switch him over most stores have carts with special seats for babies in them. And if you go to the mall or anything just lay the stroller all the way back and put him in that. Good luck!
