Not gaining weight..

My son is EXACTLY the same way. At his 1 year check up, he had only gained an ounce since 9 months. He is very active, was crawling at barely 5 months and walking at 10. Now, he doesn't just walk but RUNS everywhere. They just encouraged us to give him more whole milk, and said that if he's hitting the milestones okay, and he doesn't seem lethargic or hungry, then he's just fine.

It's normal for weight gain to slow down. My 13 month old went from being in the 99th percentile at birth to being in the 60th percentile at his 1 year check up. I think you are right in asking her doctor to see what he/she says, but I don't think it's anything to worry about at this point.

I had weight problemswith my daughter when she was 4months old, for us it was a matter of making sure you keep her milk and solids up as long as she is gaining some sort of weight and doesn't loose to much weight she shouldn't have a problem while she is sick its going to be hard but now she is walking she'll be in need of more for the amount of engry she is using. best of luck

My son crawled on time, but starting walking at 10 minths - he too, is a busy little boy. I've been anxious to get him in his big boy car seat - but he turned 1 on Feb 27 and weighed in at 19.10....feels like these last 3 pounds are taking forever. He has a great appetite, but is just as busy I think. His pediatrician said, "he's just not a heavy guy"... he's in the 90 percentile for height, so she told me to take that into consideration... hang in there, all in due time...

Oh and the other thing too is ask your parents or grandparents if they have any growth charts on your immediate family. I have a friend who's daughter was under the 5th percentile in weight and they asked around and the grandma had some growth charts. after that the doctor totally backed off and the baby is fine :) she's 5 yrs old and still thin but smart and cute as a button!

YOu are not alone. My daughter Jocelyn turned one on the 11th and we went in for her check up and she weight the same amount she did at 9 months- 16 lbs and 4 ounces. My doctor tells me not to worry because all of the other stuff like height, head circumference, and development skills are wonderful. She also told me there are girls that are size 2 and some that are size 12, and she's a size 2

My daughter lost an ounce from 9 mo. to her 1 yr. checkup. We've had a rough winter with a lot of colds, etc. She will be going in to be weighed every month though to see if she's gaining or not. If she doesn't, then the doctor will order blood tests. I'm not overly worried though. The girl can put away the food! She often eats the same size portion as I do, and eats very healthy. We don't eat a lof of junk food so that could be part of the reason. Also, with all the colds, she had a couple spells where she didn't eat much. Diapers have been normal, so that's another clue things are fine. My first daughter went through the same thing... born at 90th percentile and stayed there through 6 months, but then by 1 year is down to 10-20th percentile. She's 2 1/2 now and is back up into the average range. Developmentally she is also on track, so the doctor said it doesn't seem to be a big concern but wants to track it to be sure. Also keep in mind that from 1-2 and up kids will NOT gain nearly as much or as quickly as from birth to 1. At this point it's going to take longer to gain a pound than it had.

I wouldn't worry, my LO has been 19 pounds even since he was 10 months old (he turned 1 year today!!) and our Dr. isn't worried. As long as he is acting normally reaching milestones and continues drinking formula. Eating solids at this age is for experience, as long as she is drinking formula she is getting the proper nutrients.

Happy Birthday to all the Feb. babies!! :) My baby girl will turn 1 on feb. 23rd!!
I am so happy to read some of these posts, thanks Tammy for your post. I had the same worry. My little one was 9lbs 8oz when she was born. ( I am tall, 5'10'' and slim) She was such a chubby baby but has thinned out a lot. She now weighs about 19.5 lbs. We had to bring her to the docs to check out her ears for infection also. I am not worried because she is very active and she is starting to eat more little meals through the day, but with that being said some days or more than others. She will be starting on whole milk by next week. She is drinking as of now 1/2 formula with half whole milk. We started that at 11 months as the pedi advised so she would get used to the whole milk. I worry sometimes she doesn't eat enough solids/table foods, because now that she will be going to whole milk soon, she will have to rely on the solids for nutrition/caleries. Anyway...18 pounds sounds awesome Tammy! Like our Pediatrician told us "your baby will let you know when she is hungry" sometimes our little one will only have 2 tsp. of food and that's it, but she is happy and laughing, and you can't force it. Happy Birthday!!

Tammy, my daughter is in the same boat. She'll have her 1 year checkup in a few weeks, and I know she'll be between 19-21 lbs. If you think about it, it's expected for babies to be about 3x their birthweight by their first birthday. My little muffin has always been in the low percentile for weight and high percentile for height. A little bean pole. As long as your baby continues on her own arc, she's completely fine!

Our daughter is at failure to thrive status and doctor is doing tests on her at the hospital next week. She is bloew 3rd percentile and going downhill continually these months in weight and height. Doctor gave her till she turned 1 years old to see if she improved but she didnt. It is a very scary time for our family and hard.
My thoughts on your daughter is sounds fine :) 18.5 lbs is great!! and well within normal range. Sickness, teething, and being busy can all keep weight off a lil but my oldest only weighed that at her 1st birthday and she was fine :) So I wouldnt worry :) I hope her birthday is great.!

Weight gain slows down considerably towards the end of the first year. They will never again gain weight the way they did those first few months:-) If they're happy and otherwise healthy; try not to sweat it.

Yep, totally happening to my son too. Was gaining like 2 lbs a month and has only gained 1/4 lbs since he was 9 mos. The cold can take some weight off and I've learned that different scales w/in the same office can be off too.

Also, some doctors have the baby strip down for the weigh ins and others don't care. That can make the weight off too.

All in all, if she is hiring her milestones and thriving then she's fine :)

THIS IS VERY NORMAL..... SHE STILL ON THE GROWTH CHART AND THRIVING.. NO NEED TO WORRY.....
if she is a lil to busy then u might ask the DR to do a U/A(urinalysis) on her to see if she has a urinary tract infection.... this can cause babies/young children to b very active and burn more calories then they take in.... but not to worry.....

my daughter stop gain weight at 5 months.... she was 12lbs 10oz till 8.5months and then she only went up to 13.2 now that she is 12months she is only 15lbs and the DR has me doing everything thinkable to make her gain weight but as like ur daughter she is fine.... the DR just thinks she need more fat on her, she is eating fine, above and beyond all milestones... and just a super busy lil girl who always laughing about something...

AS A MOM U WILL KNOW IF SOMETHING WRONG... but if it makes u feel better look at the growth chats and u will see that they level off the closer they get to a year old

I wouldn't worry. My daughter is perfectly healthy. Rarely ever sick and ALWAYS has a huge appetite. I've never seen a 1 year old eat like her! But today was her 1 year check up and she was only 18lbs 10 oz. She turned 1 on Friday. She was only 17lbs at her 9 month check up! She is extremely active and it seems like she never just sits still, walking/running all the time. SO I wouldn't worry at all. If she's doing all the other things she is supposed to and having plenty of food and formula (when she's feeling well) I wouldn't worry. Some babies are just tiny. My daughter is in the 10th percentile for her weight, and the doctor isn't concerned in the least.

She is burning a lot of extra calories right now! especially with walking! My daughter has only gained1 pound since she was 6 months old and she turned 1 on the 3rd!!! I have been very very nervous about it but her pedi. told me that she is not worried yet! So we'll see! She said that she may just be petite. Yours might be as well. She weights 18 pounds and has for several months now! They say they will eat when they are hungry and not to worry because their bodies know just offer healthy meals and snacks! Good luck!

As long as your LO is happy, still busy with all the things she normally does and enjoys and seems well in general, then I really wouldnt worry too much. From around a year, a babies weight gain slows down, and they are also using up a lot more energy and calories moving about.
My little girl has also stayed at about the same weight for some time now, and one week she eats loads, the next its hit and miss- but it all balances itself out. I have done Baby Led Weaning with her though, so have had to put a lot of trust in her, but I have realised over time, that these little ones will eat what they need, when they need it, as long as they are frequently offered healthy meals and snacks. So I have learnt to just keep an eye on her in general, and if she is happy; busy; sleeping well and looking well- then all is well. I just keep offering the healthy balanced meals and her Formula. If she is hungry and needs it- she will eat. Your bub sounds great and just as busy as mine! Im sure she is absolutely fine, but if you are concerned then its always a good idea to put your mind at ease and ask the Dr. All the best!

I have some of the same problems. My little girl just turned 1 on friday and last week she had to go to the ER because she wasnt even keeping her formula down for three days and when they weighed her she was only 17.5lbs which is only 1lb since her 9month check up and 2lbs since her 6 month checkup. The only reason i am not to concerned is because she has always been on the move she crawled at 5 months and walked at 8months she is always moving. now she is eating when she wants to and is switched to lactos free milk since they fuigured out that she is lactos intolerant. i would say if she is hitting all her milestones then i wouldnt worry.
