I am 39 weeks pregnant. I have been having contractions now non-stop for 2 weeks. I have dilated 3 centimeters. Nd Im 70 % effaced. The doctor still wont induce me. Could me having all these contractions stress or hurt the baby? This is something I have been worried about.

I am having the same thing. I am 38 weeks tomorrow. I have no idea if I have effaced or anything but I did ask my doctor if having these contractions was bad and she told me that it was actually a good thing! She said not all people will get strong "practice" contractions but that those who do have bodies that are more prepared when labour comes. Many people have told me that this also means easier labour when the time comes!!! :D

No, all the contractions won't stress or hurt the baby. Being that this pre-labor is not nearly as intense as actual labor, it is harder on you than baby.

Most of the time, doctors don't induce nowdays until you are past your due date unless there is a problem. Although dilating 3cm and being partially effaced isn't what we are told is "normal" in pregnancy (that normal is more like waking in the middle of the night and all of the sudden being in labor), it is actually very normal to have contractions, dilate, and efface for many weeks before going into labor. Many doctors believe if that is how your body does the labor process, it is best because it is your body doing what it knows to do. With my daughter, I dilated about 1cm/week from 36wks on to 41wks, and was 100% effaced from around 38wks.

Every woman, and every pregnancy is different, but if you are concerned, ask what baby's heart rate is...it should be over 120. As long as it is over 120, that probably explains why your doctor isn't wanting to induce. There is not an indication of the baby being stressed.

To ease your stress and fear, try yoga or meditation. That can help you relax.

I'm 38 weeks tomorrow, and I've been having the "practice labor" contractions for almost 3 weeks now, I know how you feel. I'm totally effaced, but not dialted at all. They keep telling me that the baby is not being harmed by the contractions and that usually a long "pre-labor" means a shorter active&transition... Just keep up with your visits, and if anything is different don't be afraid to call and ask the dr!

I'm not a Dr. so please don't take what i say for pure fact but I'm more than sure that you having the contractions aren't hurting the baby at all, it's just you're body preparing itself for the real deal. Some people have more intense braxton hicks contractions and others don't have them as intense so I'm more than sure you don't have anything to worry about but if you're really that worried get back in touch with your Dr. Good luck!!
