October 11, 1:27 am I was told by my doctor that even though I already had the flu shot that it very important for pregnant women to also get the swine flu shot. It is safe and can help prevent us from getting this. I was also told by one of the expecting parents that I work with that it was a good idea to get it because when the epidemic started with swine flu, almost 70% of the women who were pregnant and contracted the swine flu lost their babies. Very sad, but I just wanted to share that with everyone who reads these posts. It is your choice but I do recommend you get the shot when it comes out.

70 % of women who get the flu lose their baby!? WHERE did u get that stat??? I have done plenty of research and NEVER came up with anything like that at all! DONT scare mothers with false facts!

According to one article I read, the insert that shows all the information about the vaccine that comes in the box says that it's only 25% effective when you do the math. 50% of the 50% that produce antibodies. False sense of security if you ask me.

One of my sisters-in-law works for a company that is manufacturing the H1N1 vaccine and she said that under no circumstances would she recommend getting the vaccine for my daughter or me. I have not gotten either the regular flu or the H1N1 shot.

I was told to get mine if at all possible. So I finally found a place to get one about 6 weeks ago and everything is fine. I would recommend getting one because it also vaccinates your baby for the first 6 months before he is able to get his own.

I dont know if you got it yet, but I got both shots and I feel perfectly fine! All doctors are recommending it because if you do develop the flu, especially while pregnant, you will suffer 10 times worse than someone who isnt pregnant, and you put the baby in great risk of problems! The shot also carries straight to the baby in the womb, so you dont have to get your baby vaccinated until later years! I think it is the best thing to do!

I debated and researched for months on the vaccine. In the end I got it and haven't had a problem. I have several underlying health conditions in addition to being pregnant plus I am a teacher so I was constantly worried to the point of not sleeping about catching it. Its been two week since I got it and my daughter just got her 2nd dose of it and I finally am feeling like I can go out and not constantly worry about catching this awful flu. I knew how anxious I had gotten when my 2 year old told me she couldn't go to Chuck E Cheese's until she got a flu shot:) While we are still practicing good hygine and washing hands alot it's nice to have the constant worry gone.

I got my regular flu shot too with no problems and my OBGYN is telling me that I need to get the swine flu vaccine as well, but i'm scared of the side affects (if there are any) So i'm going to wait a little while to see what happens with everyone else who gets the vaccine.

Just wonder if u ended up getting the vac. I did to much to worry about if u dont get it I have had no problems and it been about a month my doc told me he delivered a 32week preg women and she was deing of the swine flu and her baby was born with it...SAD... I dont want them odds....

i thought the vaccine was new but apparently they have been using it in australia for the last 4 months or so with no issues. They are just finishing winter there. my mums a nurse so i talked to her about it. As i was feeling something like a hipocrit as i take my kids for all of their injections and here i am questioning one i should get. im 6 months pregnant now though so physically the baby is developed if i was earlier in pregnancy i may be a little more worried about having the vaccine. The idea is i guess that the vaccine is less risky than getting flu itself.

I'm not, the doctors are telling me to but it's too new for me. No one is my family is getting. Plus, were we are H1N1 is not very common so really there is no sense in it for us.

I got my regular flu shot from my OBGYN and then they were offering a free swine flu shot clinic in Mobile Alabama where I live, so me and the kids went down and got ours a few weeks back. I figured better safe than sorry since they said that the swine flu is really doing a number on pregnant women and killing alot of them that get it since their immune system is already weakened. I havent had any problems from the shot and I got it almost 3 weeks ago

I have yet to be sick as well... just allergy issues! I have a 3 year old son as well that has had about 6 kids in his class come down with the Swine Flu. We wash our hands and count to 20 together when he comes home. We are both doing great and haven't been sick at all (knock on wood). Washing your hands a lot during the day is half the battle!

ok..Amen to that...because once you think about pregnant women which i was told also by the doctor have a higher immune system than others...i havent caught a cold sniffle or nothing since i been pregnant...either time..so i agree wash your hands ,keep clean and all, and it should be all good, but loose your child i dont see that happing..

70% of the women who were pregnant and contracted the swine flu LOST THEIR BABIES? That is the most absurd thing that I've heard yet. This is untrue.

I was told by MY doctor (which who is also my uncle) that the Swine Flu is almost if not weaker then the regular flu. Just keep your hand washed and Vitamin D is very good! Prenatal vitamins are a big plus! If you have any other health conditions, I would suggest getting this shot. Otherwise it's completely up to you.

I SERIOUSLY doubt you will lose your child... I can't believe someone would post this crap.

My doctor strongly recommended it, because it protects not only me but also gives immunity to the baby, who cannot get vaccinated in the first 6 months. I got the seasonal flu vac in September and the H1N1 yesterday (it's currently only available to pregnant women in my area).

I've talked to a couple of doctors about it and they both recommended getting it. My regular doctor said that they can't do any official drug testing on pregnant women because it's considered unethical. So really, any drugs given to pregnant women are given kind of blindly. Obviously, some are considered more safe than others because they have been around longer and people haven't been complaining about their kids having three heads or whatever.

I'll probably end up getting the H1N1 for the following reasons:

--The H1N1 vaccine was created the same way every other flu vaccine is created. Each year they guess which strain of flu will be the most prevalent, and then manufacture the vaccines to guard against that specific strain. So every year, technically, there's a new vaccine. I don't really see this one as being all that different, aside from the fact that there's more public panicking about H1N1.

--I don't want my baby contracting it in his first few months of life. February is still the flu season. If I get the vaccine, then my body will produce the antibodies to make me immune to H1N1. When the baby is born, my immunity will pass on to him and will continue to protect him for the first six months of his life. If I don't get it, he'll still be susceptible, and I'm not okay with that.

--Yes, there are absolutely risks. But there are risks involved with everything we do, from driving a car to eating certain produce. In my mind, in this situation, the benefits outweigh the risks.

I have several pregnant friends who have opted not to get the H1N1 vaccine, and I say more power to them. The important thing is for each of us to research this and make the decision that we're each comfortable with.

I refuse.

I know it's been tested on pregnant women but theres no way they could have tested it for long term affects since it hasn't existed long enough.

There was a vaccine in the late 50's for Thalidomide that they swore was safe for pregnant women, they used it and they estimate around 8000 babies across 46 countries came out with physically disabled because of it.

I know it's a risk not taking the vaccine but in my opinion, being pregnant, it's a bigger risk to take it. I'll happily have it after my little girl is born.

yeah I dont know what I'd do either... I'm pregnant now and most of my life I've never gotten the flu shot and any time that I do get the flu its for a day tops... Besides that the 2 times I did get the flu vaccine the effects were still the same as if I didnt get it. I dont know I'm very sceptical when it comes to shots. I'm not around alot of people throughout the day. I just think the bad out ways the good when it comes to the shots. But that is only my opinion...

They are recommending that all pregnant women should get it saying that we could die if we get the virus. But I'm also leery of the vaccine because I don't think it's been tested enough and even if they did test it on pregnant women how could they possibly know what the effects are on the fetus? I've been trying to figure out which risk is the one worth taking and I can't decide for myself. I think you just need to look at all the different facts that are out there and decide which way you want to go. That’s what I’m doing for me and my 21 month old and I have yet to come to a decision.

I was told that I need to get both the flu shot and the swine flu shot but was told that they aren't offering the swine flu shot here where I'm at. I asked to just find out what they thought. I'm doing fine so far without both but not around a lot of people or anything like that.

my office is pretty much making it mandatory for me... i don't like that it's "mandatory" because i like choices. but the amount of pregnancy women getting it makes me a little nervous so i'm getting it

Some vaccines in pregnancy are safe and some are not. Any vaccine which is 'live' (has live particles of bacteria or virus in it) is NOT safe in pregnancy - so this includes TB, rubella, chickenpox and MMR. See http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/159_16... for a good summary. I hope this helps.

My doctor stressed that it was very important to get it, and they are saying pregnant women are the first priority to getting them... but I am nervous too. It is too new of a vaccine and Im sure has not been tested enough to determine long term and shrot term effects to the baby.

What a fantastic article and video Carla.

We avoid all vaccines - but that's more about what is contained in them rather than the vaccine and the amount given at any one time!

Im doing an all natural birth and wont be getting any vaccines, they are way too risky and can cause too many other issues. It is def not worth it to me. It is your choice what you do, do what you feel is best for your baby :) Good luck!

I am going to get it as soon as its available, but was told it won;t be available until November sometime. Currently, there is only the nasal spray vaccine, and that is not suitable for pregnant women or toddlers under 3 according to the CDC and my doctor.
