Too soon for apple juice?

My daughter wont be getting any juice until she is a year old. There is no need for them to have the juice and the sugar on their gums and teeth (when they come in) can be detrimental. It also builds in them a desire for sweet things which can become really difficult to break when they are older. I just dont think it promotes helathy drinking/eating habits. My daughter only gets water and breastmilk and thats all she will drink until she is 1!

my son at three months was drinking applejuice just because he was always hungry and dint always want formula. i gave him 1 ounce apple with 2-3 ounces of water:) he is 5 months now and still doing great, i think u know whats best for ur baby!!!

My doctor told me that juice is okay, only two ounces a day & you should dilute it with about an ounce of water. :) But we have been giving our son apple juice also since he was about 3 months old.

I wouldn't give apple juice at all as they don't need it and it's not that good for there gum and teeth to come, warm boiled water would be better. but if they are taking it there is no harm as long as it's not to much. it's sound like your baby is ok on it, even water it down

I think a lot of my IBS and various tummy troubles could be linked to being weaned too early as a baby, advice was a lot different back then.

my daughter is about to be four months but i began giving her apple juice at a bout three months. i dont give it to her everyday but i do give it to her at least twice a week and my doctors says thats fine

i was told by a baby nutritionist that 6 months MINIMUM for juices and then only 1 bottle un-diluted once a day if they want it, it has nothing it it for them and it basically taking away an entire meal

I didn't give my first son apple juice til he was about 7 or 8 months old. They should take it out of a sippy cup not a bottle. There is no nutritional benefit to apple juice so I would just stick with breast milk or formula and once in a while some water.

No, your baby does not need apple juice! You should talk to your pediatrician about it. Actually, not even toddlers need apple juice. All they should have is formula or breast milk. Even with my 2 year old, he only gets milk and water. It is better to get your nutrients from real fruit rather than juice. I only give him juice as a treat. Your baby needs nothing other than formula or breast milk until she is 6 months old.

i have twins and they are 16 weeks old and i gave one of them applesauce one night and she loved it. i dont give it to her often just once in a blue moon. but every baby is different, and as far as doctors go unless something is wrong they are just going to tell you what they "recommend". so dont stress..its YOUR baby. do what you feel is right. if he starts acting sickly or spitting up you will know to stick with milk. hope this helps! :)

I guess the only thing I would suggest is to dilute it with water at first, babies can get loose stools from full strength juice when they are little.

my son drinks 2 ounces of water and 2 ounces of prune juice a day for constipation and when we go to arizona, since its so hot his pedi said it was okay to give him a couple ounces of water. but we havent tried apple juice

I have been giving my baby apple and white grape juice since she was 10 weeks old. The reason for this was because she was constipated, this helped to regulate her. Plus it is a nice treat for them. You are the mom and you know what is best. Keep doing what you are doing :). Oh and my pediatrician said it was just fine to give diluted juice at this point.

Most pediatricians recommend waiting until 6 months old before starting any liquid other than milk and it should be mixed 50/50 with water. Also just an FYI, white grape juice is much easier on babies' tummies. :) Apple juice can act as a laxative.

i talked to a nurse practicioner and they said i could give my son 3 oz of apple or pear juice a day to soften his stool... but as for water your not to give them water at all because they get enough of that with there formula... but i agree if the mother feels like its fine to give there child that then so be it,,,

their tummys arent prepared for anything other than milk. their digestive system is too immature for this, plus the sugar in the juice isnt good for them. now when u start on solids you want your kid to start veggies first then fruits , so that they dont only like the sweet tastes!

my dr said that I can give my daughter apple juice since she only poops once every 10-12 days!! We've tried everything and even the juice didn't help. Now I've given up and I'm sticking with breastmilk for the time being. Good luck in whatever decision you make- as you know every child is different and every parent is as well.

My son has had apple juice at 4 months and I gave him half juice half water. I dont seen it being a problem when its hot outside. He loved it!. Its when u feel its good to give it to him.

I would give my daughter water in a bottle, but not apple juice. I still haven't given my 18mo anything else. If they get used to water early that's good for later in life.

Unnecessary sugar and calories. Breastmilk/formula only. My 3 1/2 month old will only be getting breastmilk for first 6 months, then introduce foods with breastmilk as only beverage. (Unless medically necessary for something else)
My 4 year old step-daughter only gets milk and water regularly. Only juice she drinks is orange juice occasionally. Other juices and sodas are for special occasions only. She loves milk and water now because of it. When given a choice, she chooses milk/water 98% of time anyway! :-)

3month is way too soon. Juice has all the same vitaims and minerals as an apple puree but without the FIBRE, which is important for the developing bowels. you can upset there stomachs and research has shown that feeding children too early can increase there chances for major health problems later in life eg bowel cancer, especially "adult" apple juice. Check out "world health org" also known as WHO. Infant Apple juice shouldnt be given til at least are on solids, and infants unless advised by a doctor should be on solids until 4mths (at minmum) recommended is 6mths.

Interesting. Seem's like everyone does their own thing with this. Doctors, health nurses and all the documentation I read says nothing but breast milk till 6 months. The findings indicate that their digestive system is not mature enough and that food allergies are more likely. But as one mom said above - to each their own!! :)

my doctor told me not to give the twins any solids until 4 months (which is today) and to only do oatmeal or rice cereal... and no baby food until 6 months. also for apple juice or water not recommended as a treat, but if its like really hot and they arent hungry but maybe thirsty, to only give them one ounce for each month of life. so right now i would give them 4 oz. thats just what i was told... hope it helps

Can understand everyones answers! I personally think the mum knows when it's time to start giving their baby something else to try! I only just started to feed my 4 month old girl food and when I asked the nurse she said it's good to introduce them to different textures at an ealry age as it helps in their devolopment! Maybe flavour is the same!!! I just wouldn't give it too often!

My older daughter is 18 months old and doens't even get that much every day.. I wouldnt recommend it of course, too much sugar, and no point. Milk or formula is best. I gave my oldest daughter apple/prune juice once and only watered down, because she was a little backed up, but otherwise, they really need the nutrients in formula/breastmilk much more..

my doctor said apple juice or prune juice is fine if you are giving it to them to soften their stool. If you are giving it as a treat, then it is not recommended

if you think she is just thirsty you can try just water but not too much maybe 1-2 oz otherwise her tummy is getting full of useless stuff. if she is asking for something then she should have milk

Apple juice is unnecessary at this point. Like Nikole said, it's empty calories that they should be getting elsewhere. Also, by giving her the sugar, it greatly, greatly increases her risk for diabetes later in life.

I wondered this too and asked my pediatrician. He said that children need milk till they are a year old... that feeding them water or applejuice fills them with empty calories and no nutrients. They need as much nutrients and vitamins they can get for their growing bodies, so filling thier tummies with something other then milk is not recommended.

I give my daughter some pedilight when she is sick but besides that no. she is three months too i don't know if its too early or not but i know that my mom didn't with any of her children
