Bowel problems?

My son has had problems with his bowel movements since shortly after we started solids. I noticed a difference after we tried applesauce and then banana's (the applesauce he was on for a little while actually before we tried another fruit). His BM's are hard. At first I thought it was because he wasn't getting enough veggies or fruit after trying to increase those I booked an appointment with my doctor, who I can't see until the 24th. So my husband and I decided to take him to emerg. The doctor there said it was because of the fruit, that fruit in young babies can be hard to digest. Has anyone else heard this? A week later I was talking with a dietician who said the fruit is what makes it soft. (Although it doesn't explain why the prunes didn't work, but his BM's haven't really become soft since stopping the fruit either.) Any suggestions?

Thank you everyone for responding! We've no seen our family doctor and he said it's actually the breast milk (more binding or something like that) and he's probably not getting enough fluids. He told us to give him three 5oz bottles a day (two apple juice, one water). The only problem I have now is Kane doesn't take a bottle. His stools have softened up and we haven't even been getting all of the liquid into him, so I'm thankful for that.

Make sure he is getting plenty of fluids. It's best to nurse or feed formula before each meal. Babies and people often confuse thirst with hunger. Our doctor told us that apple juice (full strength) with it's sugars help get things moving too. Make only small changes in his diet at a time (every 4 days) . It may seem that the diet is boring but they started out drinking only milk all day. I think the probiotic would be helpful if the baby is on formula... I don't think it would be needed for most baby foods or for digesting breast milk.

It takes a couple of days for the prunes to work. Applesauce and Bananas are not good for constipation, they are part of the BRAT diet for the opposite problem. Banans, rice, applesauce, toast, for the runs.
A little bit of prunes 3 times a day, and pear juice should help, but it does take a couple of days.
I am on my third kids out of four with constipation issues and we still had to use prunes and salad everyday up thru grade school.
Thank you for the probiotic info! I will have to try that!

Give him a probiotic, my son had a similar issue where it seemed as if he was having a hard time passing stools, or they where hard. We use Solaray Baby Me Now Baby Life Probiotic, you use 1 scoop daily and just add it to the formula or food. We've seen a HUGE difference in stools, they are now regular and have a much softer consistency, he no longer cries or exerts extra energy when pooing we're back to normal. Hope this helps you out. You should be able to get the probiotic at any health food store in the cold section. Good luck, hope this helps.

have you tried prune juice? Just mix prune juice with water half and half and give it to him. I used to have to do that with my daughter because once she hit 3 weeks she'd only poop once a week if that. Once I started solids it seems like she doesn't stop pooping she has seriously 4-5 poopy diapers a day so I have the opposite problem but I'd try the prune juice it worked for her!
