What worked the best for you?

For me running/walking....also strength training (I'm using a DVD program called ChaLEAN Extreme).
I don't take vitamins, but instead, I've been drinking Shakeology. It's been a month, and I really like it.

For my mother, swimming worked great for her. She takes Royal Jelly and eats yogurt every day!

Hi, all.
I haven't been working out as much as I want to, but I'm still running (not every day). I do one 5K a month so I have something to keep running for.
One thing I'm very sure about is that I have to work out first thing in the morning. I get too tired or lazy after coming home from work.
I try to go out for a walk or jog when I get up. If it's cold or raining, I do DVD workout. This week I did Jillian's 30 Day Shread. It's a short, but good workout!

Hi, all. I haven't been here in a while.
What is your goal for this year? Mine is to be able to run 5K in 30 min. I hope it becomes easier... I want to be strong minded. Hope some weight loss will come with it!

That is AWESOME Marilyn. I love that you have your hubbie's support. My husband started working out too about a month ago. It's really great to have that sort of support. A friend gave me a book about weight training for women that I'm starting to use. I love the free weight workouts. I can't wait to hear how you like the new routine.

Also, I have read that interval training is the best for weight loss. What type of interval training does it recommend?

Betsy, it's good to hear from you. You're doing great with your running. Jenelle, congrats to you as well.

My student teacher will be with me for 8 weeks. She's awesome. It's nice to have two teachers. The students are responding to both of us really well!

My husband bought me a new book, "The New Rules of Lifting for Women". He has the men's counterpart. It lays out a training program and diet plan. I'm going to start on "stage One' this week. The workouts focus on interval training with hand weights, resistance, and swiss ball. I'm excited, because I've been starting to get bored with my workouts lately.

Girls, I've been working out for 5 months now and I'm starting to feel great!!! I went out with some old friends from high school last night and felt awesome . . . better than I've felt in years.

WE CAN BE FIT, FABULOUS, AND FORTY . . . SOMETHING.

Hi All! Sounds like we are all off and running figurativly and literally. lol. I teach Kindergarten so I spell badly also. Anyway I logged 28 miles running and walking last week and also added a 14 mile family bike ride and dropped 1 lb. haha Eatting late at night is definitely not helping, but what are you gonna do. Football season has begun. I try and eat a meal at 4pm, but don't always get to that as some day's I'm excercising at that time before taking my son to practice. Wyatt had his first game Saturday night and it was soo fun to watch. Lost miserably, but had fun.

I hope you all have a good week this week. Jenelle congrats on the 2! I loved Girl Scouts. I was a leader for 5 years and my daughter did it for 7 years. Great program. Marilyn, glad you like your student teacher. Will make for a short year. Do you have her for the year?

Nori, its great to see your going to do more events.

I know its hard to change routines with school starting up, but I know you ladies will be able to find your rythmn.

I dropped another 2 pounds, so I'm really happy about that but I also need to watch what I'm eating. All we can do is our best for right now and if we slip, its no big deal, just get back on the plan (at least that's what I tell myself). How did the football games go?

I have a student teacher, which is making me use my best strategies, etc. She's doing great and we already have a good rapport with each other. How's your class going? Has your son had any football games yet? My son's first game is in about 45 minutes. I can't wait to see him play!

Nori, how did your son do at his first game? I bet you were the fittest mom out there!!!

Janelle, how are you?

Have a great weekend, ladies,

Hi all, I think I'm in shell shock with the new work schedule. I miss my morning jogs! I made it up once at "o'dark early" and once with a friend last week, but had company and that always squelches the workouts. I'm doing well with bringing healthy lunches to work and even doing well with before dinner snacking, however it's the dinner that is my downfall. sigh. Well today is another day right? Have a good weekend everyone!

Well, girls, I blew it today. Last night I was very stressed about work and decided that I needed to rush off to my classroom early this morning. I didn't go to the gym and felt horrible all day. I felt bloated and was disappointed in my lack of commitment. Tomorrow's a new day, I need to pick myself back up!!!

You know you're my accountability partners, so I had to be honest. :)

Hi, Marilyn. Great job on sticking to your schedule.

Jenelle, it's nice to see the result! I'm so happy for you.

I signed up for 3 more events....10K in September, 5K in late October, and my first half-marathon in November!! I'm so excited. I have a good friend who coaches running groups so I have been training with them every week. I get really lazy on Sundays, but other than that I've been doing Turbo Jam or running in the morning and P90X at night. However, my diet has been bad. I had 3 gatherings last week and had cheesecake, dougnuts, etc. Bad!! I have to watch what I eat!!

Have a great day!!

Jenelle,
That area around your belly is like the hardest part to lose. I don't know what it is.
I lost about 15 lbs. since January, but I still have the belly. It just takes time to get rid of it I think. I think you just have to exercise to eat well to get the belly to go away. Don't feel bad, you will get there!!

Jenelle, I'm sorry. I work with 5 year olds all day long and I get that often and worse when they are trying to make up sentences using the word fat that they can read. It get's interesting. They see the word fat on the board and then they look at me. It's a hoot actually. Try and put into persepective the age. Who knows what your daughter was thinking about at that moment. Childrens' thought world is so different than an adults which is a good thing. Hang in there. You will see your belly shrink and when you do, there will be no stopping you. I would measure each week and see your progress. I've got belly fat, hip fat and leg fat that is an ongoing battle for me. I hope your day today was better. Betsy

Have a great day at work tomorrow. I see our jobs as teachers as part of a cycle. We drop our babies off at preschool, grandparents, etc., then we go to school and get to be with another group of parents children. We trust our daycare providers, and in turn our students parents trust us. When I had this "ah, ah", it put my job in much better perspective . . . being part of something bigger. :)

Thanks Marilyn for great suggestions!!

I actually found a website called "over forty fit and fabulous" (OFFF)
So instead over forty, I just want to call it fortysomething. We can be "FFF"!!

That's so great to hear about success stories. Great job Marilyn on inspring others!!
I'm glad that you found a buddy to workout with, too.

Well, I did my first 5K last weekend. It was so much fun. Running was hard, because that was my first time running the whole thing. I've been doing run/walk and I might need to stick with that since it was so hard at the end. It was so inspiring to see other people especially the older people. The oldest person was 88 years old. He finished in 52 minutes. There were several olders people and they all did great jobs. I want to be like that when I get old!!

Jenelle, thanks for the tip. My main goal is to be healthier, from the inside out, now that I'm in my 40's. I'm 41 right now. My main physical plans are to be toner and lose some of the loose fat around my arms and stomach. I weight 135, so I don't have much weight to lose, but I really want to have a tone body. My workout goals are to do 20 - 30 minutes with light weights, Swiss ball, bands, etc. on the floor, then do another 25 - 30 minutes of cardio on the elliptical three mornings a week.. I worked out with a trainer over the summer, so I have two routine I can do successfully. I also take one yoga class on Saturday mornings for flexibility and mental health!

Girls, I worked out all three mornings this week!!! You are the ones I can brag to. :)

Praise report: One of my coworkers noticed how my body has changed over the summer. She told her husband, her husband told my husband, then he came home and told me. The next day, she asked me if she could workout with me. We're going to the gym together on Saturday! Now that's a testimony to "fit, fabulous, and forty"!

Any mores successes?

HI, Bets. I like the idea of taking the kids to the park. We have a 9 mile paved walk around the lake I live near. I may take the kids over there and walk a few miles. They don't walk fast though but it could help. Thanks. I may try jogging on a excercise tramp (the small 2 feet or so ones) I don't think that will bother my knee too much and it will be easier to do that with the weird weather we're having.

Marilyn, I was told that you can do cardio everyday but when using weights or resistence bands that sort of thing, you sould let your muscles rest at least 24 hours. Since the stairmaster is cardio, you shouldn't have any problems. Our trainer at work reminded me last week that if your goal is lose weight, you need 20-30 minutes of cardio. The weight training helps to tone and shape. I'm trying to do both, that's why I try to do cardio 5 days a week. What are your goals?

Betsy - posted on 08/19/2009

Marilyn,

I'd do what you have energy for and what your body dictates, but do give your body a rest at least one day a week. 20 min isn't too long though. Aren't I helpful? lol Sounds like your balancing your workouts well. Keep up the great work! I'm going for a bike ride this am as my hip is still sore. Also going to see a Massage Therapist this afternoon and hopfully work out the knot or whatever it is.

Jenelle - Can you walk to get your cardio in this week? I'm having to alter what I do also. It's hard though when I'm so use to doing the same thing. I took my kids and dog to a park to workout the other day. All had a good time and wanted to do it again, so I got bonus prizes being with my kids and working out at the same time.

Nori - Wow, I'm impressed with am and pm workouts! What DVD do you use? I'm thinking of getting one to change up my workouts.

Take care all! Bets

Hi, ladies! What a looong day!!! My best tip for meals is preparing a menu for the whole week. We buy groceries on Sunday, have the list posted to the fridg, then don't have to think anymore. I usually let each child choose a dinner, then we fill in the rest.

I love the crock pot too, but it's so hot here, still in the 100's, that I don't usually pull it out until October. My mom picked me up a crock pot cookbook from Costco a few years ago that has tons of quick, easy recipes. There's a potato/spinach soup that is very tasty. I'll have to post it for you both.

Gonna go to bed early,

Betsy, I started to use crock pot not too long ago. I like it, but I need more recipies so if you have some good ones, let me know. I made some chicken soup yesterday. I just put frozen chicken, veggies and chicken broth in there and it was ready when I got home. It was great. Just added some seasoning at the end. BBQ pork sounds good. I have to give it a try.
My son plays football for highschool and he practices from 4:00-6:00 so it works out good. I used to go to my kickboxing classes and running at night, but now I just go running in the morning and do DVD workout at night.

Hey Marilyn - Way to go getting to the gym first day back and kudo's for beach excercising while on vacation! And, no I haven't gotten my bum out there today. I think I injured my hip or pulled a muscle as it hurts every time I take a step, so today is a cross training day for me. I jogged 4.8 miles yesterday in the hills and by the evening I couldn't step without a lot of pain. I'm bummed.

I like your plan for dinners during football season. I think we'll be doing that as well. Just have to get in the kitchen earlier in the day. I'm not good at planning dinners. Have any good ideas? I have one crock pot bbq pulled pork recipie which is great, but that's about it.

I'm back from vacation! We had a great time at the beach. We exercised every morning!!! My biggest challenge was the food. My father-in-law LOVES to cook and I can't say no. I know my biggest challenge for the next few days is watching what I eat. I'm excited to get back to the gym tomorrow. Since it's Saturday, I'll be doing yoga.

Betsy, my son's football practice is from 6 to 8 as well. The kids and I will probably eat before my husband gets home and I'll probably have his dinner ready for him to eat quickly. My husband is taking a very active part as "football dad". It's been great for them!!!

I picked up a Women's Health magazine and it had a great beginners guide to running. When it cools off I might give it a try.

Glad to be back,

Marilyn - I read Runner's World and really like it. It has something for every type of runner from the beginners to the marathoners. It has lots of tips on how to make the most of a run, to what type of shoe to buy, to what and where the next marathon's are.

Your lucky to get home at 6:30 from football with your son. My son's practice starts at 6pm so we aren't home till 8:30. Eatting has been our biggest challenge durring football. We like to eat as a family, but don't like the pounds it brings eatting so late!

I will keep you all posted about the Bodybugg. I haven't bought one yet, still trying to find the best price on Ebay.

Jenelle - Welcome. All I can say is keep at it and results will come. Sounds like you are being realistic though, so you'll do fine. I started being serious about excercising and eatting well at the end of last April and have dropped two pant sizes. I had about 20 lbs to lose. Still working on it, but it's slow. The main thing is that I feel great and my family benefits.

That's nice you have an elliptical at work. I think having good shoes helps, too.
I got mine fitted at a running store called Fleetfeet. I've also tried shoes called MBT and liked them. For summer, I'm wearing Fitflops. These are both exercise shoes so they are supposed to help you tone your legs.

Hello everyone. I have a bad knee so running is pretty much out. My doc told me to avoid walking on roads because they are uneven and I don't have any sidewalks in my neighborhood so, I'm using my lunch hour to work out on an elliptical (we have one at work) for 20 min a day and I'm doing some strength training 3 days a week. I haven't done anything about my diet because I try to eat healthy most of the time to set an example for my kids.

I just started with the physical activity. I was told it would be about 4 weeks to begin to notice the weight loss and 8 - 12 weeks before I will be able to see the inches come off my waist.

If I can see some results, I think I'll be able to keep the routine up. Any advice on staying motivated?

The Bodybugg is an arm device worn 24 hrs. and measures calories burned. There's a website that you subscribe to and input what you ate and will measure calories burned vs calories taken in in a 24 hr. period. It was created by 24 Hr Fitness and seen on the TV show The Biggest Loser. I've heard good things about it, but haven't heard any negative things yet. I'm just wondering if it's worth it to buy one. Nori, I'm soooo excited about this new group. I think I went through a midlife crisis last and started working out in May. I think exercise has been the key. I listened to coworkers talk about exercising for MONTHS before I started. I do the eliptical and light weights 3 days a week and yoga on Saturday mornings. I haven't lost weight, but my clothes are surely fitting differently.

Betsy, I'm with you. I'm a teacher as well, and am terrified about going back to work. I've worked out with a trainer this summer (to teach me how to work out on my own), but I'm worried that I won't be able to keep it up. We'll have to keep each other accountable. Do you run in the morning or at night?

Last April I decided that I would jog and eat healthier to reach my weight goal. It's August now and I've lost 13 of the 20 lbs I want to lose. I run 5 to 6 days a week and have changed my diet to include more veggies and smaller meal portions. I'm very excited to be on the right track at the moment. I teach Kindergarten and need lots of energy. School is starting soon and with my kids after school activities and woking, I'm concerned I'll lose my momentum. I do have a plan, but I'm looking for a group of people who are in the same boat so I can keep my momentum going. Thanks for creating this community.
