Thoughts/experiences with prenatal yoga?

Hey there, mamas.

I'm about three months pregnant, and giving serious thought to some prenatal classes at a local birthing center.

What are your thoughts? I've never done yoga before. I like to run, meditative exercise has never appealed to me. That being said, I can't run like I used to, and yoga might help me with breathing and body awareness.

And I really, really want pregnant friends.

What are your experiences with prenatal yoga? Was it worth the increasingly-precious time and money? Did you make friends? Did it help with labor? Should I just try prenatal yoga at home, with videos?

All input is appreciated.

Thanks, ladies-

Hi there!
I tried a prenatal yoga workout at home and honestly it was super boring. I think a class would be the way to go. Then you can stay healthy and make preggo buddies. Win win! Since I didn't continue it I can't say if it helps you out in labor. However I would think it would. Anything that keeps your muscles and body relaxed and helps you stretch would be beneficial in labor.

Thanks for the reply, Kaitlin. There's actually a prenatal yoga video on Netflix streaming right now, I think I'll take it for a spin. Your other ideas are interesting, as well...I'm giving serious thought to switching over to swimming as the months go by. I'm afraid that the high-impact nature of running (combined with my already-lousy balance) could knock me off-kilter in the last trimester.

I appreciate the thoughtful response, cheers-

I Lovvvvveedd my pernatal yoga dvds at home. After my older kid(s) are in bed, I popped it in, lit a candle, and stretched. It made my hips feel so much better.

Now, yoga is a little hippie-dippy for me, but the strengthening and stretching benefits outweighed the music and mentality behind it. The one I sued took me a few times to get the pattern down, and then I just muted it and put on my own music. I'm not a meditative exercise person either. I don't spend money on classes that I can find online or on demand on tv, or on a dvd- never have. But if you have the money and you like group classes, go for it. I didn't find that it helped with body awareness- but maybe it did. I have always been more aware, i chart, I exercise, i stretch a lot, i do keagals, etc. I think being active during your pregnancy however you can will help with your labor.

I also found that an eliptical machine was easier on my joints than running while pregnant, and helped my hips as well. If you have gym membership or a WOW fitness (ten bucks a month) near you, that may be a great way to exercise. Or swimming. AMAZING during that second half of pregnancy. I'm also finding zumba to be better than running during pregnancy (and you can find stuff online).
