Hello, my daughter is almost 4 1/2 months old, and up until this week she has been exclusively breast fed. Due to some feeding frustrations on my end, and not enough weight gain on her end (she was born at 9 lbs 12 oz and is now 13 lbs even) , I have started supplemening some formula. I had previously fed her expressed milk occasionally with a bottle, so the change to a bottle has not been too hard, but I am noticing that she does not drink as much formula as breast milk. It's hard to be absolutely sure, but usually she will drink 5-6 oz of breast milk in a bottle feed. When I feed her formula she only drinks about 3-4 oz. She seems satisfied with this, but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this before?

Babies digest breastmilk faster than formula. Therefor your baby will drink less formula because he/she gets full faster =] HIH.

Andrea, I know what you mean. I have been breastfeeding my son since he was born 2 months ago but I am now weaning him off breast milk to formula because I am not producing enough for him. I feel bad, but what they say is that some breast milk is better than none- at least you're trying. And I am definitely not talking bad about anyone who chose not to breastfeed. My son is weighing a couple pounds less than he should and he's constantly hungry, so I think this will help him.

i just joined this community so i could chime in... and ask a few questions. i am feeling rather guilty--my 4 week old dd has been eating constantly since birth. i know that's fairly common, but sometimes i'm feeding like every 30-45 minutes and for the most 4 hours, when she's asleep. i've been having some problems keeping up with milk production and today, she had finally drained them both completely and was getting very agitated, wanting more, and i knew she was not full. so i broke down and fed her 2 ozs of formula. it seemed to fill her up, and she seems happy in a way that she hasn't been since she was born. i think she may even be sort of smiling at me. if really feel terrible. i so wanted to breastfeed her exclusively. anyone else been at or near this point with a new baby?

Thanks, things are going quite well now, I have been supplementing 2 bottles a day for the last three weeks, and when I went to get her weighed this week she was 14 lbs 8 oz! She looks much healthier now, and is more content.

I went though this when I was switching my little ones to formula too. Formula is a lot more dense then breastmilk is, so it will fill her up faster and keep her full longer. As long as you are feeding her when she's hungry I wouldn't worry about it. And don't worry abot her weight to much.... a friend of mine had a baby who was 10 lbs at birth and my 7 lb. baby outweighed him with in a few months :) It seems that bigger baby's grow slower outside the womb than they did before birth (and my 8 month old is only 15 lbs, so again, fon't be too worried!). Hope this helps!

Thanks, that at least gives me some piece of mind! Since she eats about 6 times a day, and is about 6 kilos....she should eat about 150 ml each time, which is about 5 oz. Hopefully as she gets used to the formula she will eat more.

I can't say I've experienced this, but there is a great way of working out how much milk your baby should be taking at any one bottle feed...this applies to expressed and formula milk. Basically, you need to times the baby's weight in kilos by 150, and this is how much your baby needs in millilitres in 24 hours...you then just divide that amount by however many feeds she has in 24 hours, and voila!! your result. I hope this is helpul, sorry I've no idea on pounds and ounces!! good luck...
