Are there any canadian moms who can answer some questons about becoming a foster parent for me? I have wanted to be a foster mom for quite awhile now but dont know if I can. I dont know where to start. Who do I contact? How do I know if I am financially able. I know that by becoming a foster parent it s not about financial gain but I do work and would have to stop and become a stay at home mom. So is there any financial gain or would it be like losing my income completely? If you end up wanting to adopt one of the children in your care how do you do that? If anyone has any info that could help me, keeping in mind I live in Canada, please send me a message or email me at: melissap777@hotmail.com
Thanks to anyone who can help :)

Some have had success with this, however you need to remember you would be exposing your children to things that they may not be ready for yet.

My kids are 4 and 2. I was thinking in seeing if was possible to get 4 older kids. Like ages 6 and up. Do you think this would be a bad idea?

By keeping the children younger than your own you are letting your children keep their birthplace in the family, sometimes moving them out of their place can cause problems. The government pays a "per diem" to cover food, and the extra cost of having them in your home, they also have clothing allowances, gift allowances, etc. One placement would not cover the amount your are currently earning. It will depend on what you decide works best for your family. Call your local agency and look into it further, they usually have some great information. I really enjoy what we do

susan smith.....
why do you suggest to keep the kids younger than your own? And what do you mean when you say "it is enough so I can stay at home with my kids"?

Also does the government supply money for food and clothing for the foster kids or does everything come out of pocket?
Likw right now I am making about $2000 a month but if I started to foster I would like to quit and stay at home to be with the kids but we cant afford for me to be making nothing. If this possible to do? Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Hello, our family has been a foster family for about 9 years now. You need to contact your local children's aid society and they usually have information nights/meetings so that you can learn more and find out when the classes are. It should not cost money to become a foster parent but neither does it pay enough to make money. You would only need to leave your current job if you take children under the age of 5. It is enough so that I can stay at home with my kids. We have adopted one of our little ones, even though we had no intention of doing so,, we fell in love. but of over 30 kids through our home she is the only one we have adopted. My biggest suggestion for anyone looking to foster would be to keep the foster children younger than your youngest child. If you would like more info you can contact me further.
