Greetings all,

My name is Chanequa. My husband and I adopted our son, Micah, in June. He arrived when he was 10 days old. He's now 4 months and thriving!

Does anyone have suggestions about good children's books on adoption? We want to make sure that we've got some in his library as he grows up, so that the concept of adoption will be natural to him.

Does My First Mother Love Me?

By Kathryn Ann Miller

Excellent for those whose bm's chose to give their child up for adoption.

I like the book "Tell Me About the Night I Was Born" by Jaime Lee Curtis. I think this is a good one because it is more of a domestic adoption story. There are many books out there for International stories but I have not come across as many about domestic.

Creating a lifebook is a good way to discuss adoption with your child too...we adopted our son Chase from Guatemala...and we talk to him almost daily about being adopted. I started scrapbooking just so I could make a lifebook...but you can create digital scrapbook's too-much easier-and have them printed. There was also an adoption book floating around called The Story of You...and you could have it customized with your child's info...

Todd Parr's book We Belong Together is one of my favorites. It is fabulous. He is a wonderful children's author. The Peace Book and Feelings....all great books too. He puts things in terms that children understand.

A Blessing from Above by Patti Henderson. It is about a kangaroo who longs for a baby and as she is resting under a tree one day a baby bird falls out of its nest and lands in her pouch. The mother bird says her nest is too small for all the babies and asks mother kangaroo to take care of her baby. It is a very sweet story with a religious influence.

My little girl is 5 now, but we got her when she was 9 days old. How I Was Adopted by Joanna Cole is a good book. (Our little girl likes it.) It's about a girl, but at the end says every girl and boy has her/his own story. I don't have it, but our adoption counselor said The Mulberry Bird is good. Sorry I don't know the author.

Hello! When the adoption of my two oldest finalized they wanted to share the experience with their classrooms so for each class I brought in treats and read a story about adoption. For my son's class I read The Family Book by Todd Parr. It is a cartoonish type book that celebrates many different types of families. For my daughter's class I read The Red Thread by Grace Lin. That book is my FAVORITE!! It describes adoption using the ancient Chinese belief that an invisible, unbreakable red thread connects all those who are destined to be together. I love, love, love that book!!
