Hi,

I'm Kerry, and my 5 year old daughter, Molly is starting a french immersion program (SK) in Hamilton Ontario.

We're excited about a bilingual education, but because our french is (at best) rusty, we're looking for resources to make us as effective as possible when it comes to advocating for her, and supporting her education on a day to day basis.

Who are you? Where are you located? What's been your experience of FI so far?

Welcome!

Hi Sophie :)

One of the most challenging things about FI in Ontario is that there is a requirement that French is not the language spoken at home. We all learned french in school (a million years ago), but don't have a whole lot of facility with it. We've started watching movies etc., with the french language track playing, and we've found some cool bilingual books. We're planning to make sure that at least one of us returns to a language program that will increase our fluency so that we can support her learning by understanding her homework, among other things, as she progresses in school.

We have friends in our FI program whose first language (and the language spoken @ home) is spanish. Is spanish immersion an option for you in California?

Welcome to our (little, bitty) group! :)

Hi!

I'm out in California and because of where I am, immersion is not an option right now but I am raising my son bilingual (I am from Montreal) and am always looking for stuff to keep up his French. Hopefully some day, I'll be able to move back east and put him in French or immersion school.

As far as supporting the learning, with my son, I have been militant that my family speak French and I get as many French books as possible. If you're not ready for that, you can always put movies on in French, I know most of the Disney movies at least have that option.

Bonne chance!
