When my twin boys were 18 months old I enrolled us in a mommy & me class.  It was a controlled environment so it gave me a chance to break myself into the whole playdate thing; and because most moms were moms of singletons there was plenty of help if needed.  My twins actually liked to go in different directions so at playdates at the park I would position myself about center of the playground and watch like a hawk, which was a little trying at times but in the end was so worth it for the boys and for me.  From those park trips I eventually created a play group of my own and managed to have them at my home so we wouldn't always have to go out, but still got the socializing in.  We also managed to go on lots of field trips to museums, farms, etc.  The playgroup moms got to know my kids so well and they were always there to lend a hand.  Now, even though we've moved out of state, the friendships my sons and myself created at playgroup are going to be with us forever.  The one thing to remember is if things get too hard to handle at any playgroup or field trip simply leave.  So remember always bring your own car so there is always an out if need be (however, most of the time not necessary).  So have fun and enjoy the new friends you all will make.

we joined a playgroup in our area, with kids the same age. You can also look up M.O.M.S (mothers of multiples) groups online in your area. Now that the girls are older when we go out to a playground i always dress them alike b/c it is so much easier to find 2 pink dresses instantly then look for one kid in a dress and one in pants.

Just make sure that it is in a closed in area.  You can't watch them both at the same time while carrying on an adult conversation.  Needless to say, I don't do many play dates.

We haven't been on many yet, but the ones we have they've been really good so we haven't really had any issues. I presume that'll be coming though. Maybe a seasoned mom will answer.
