My little boy Jamie got GBS at 8 days old, he was already on SCBU due to having low glucose levels, and remained to be on SCBU for the first 7 weeks of his life. He is fine now, no after effects of the meningitis have been reported. I am outraged that a simple test in late pregnancy can identify GBS and prevent babies from getting it and it isn't offered automatically on the NHS, Jamie is one of the lucky ones, my heart goes out to the people that lose their little angels due to this horrible infection.

If the mother is positive for GBS they will test the baby at birth. However it is not 100%. I was GBS positive and my daughters test after she was born was negative. I was induced and given the antibiotic prior to that and during the whole labor and delivory process. When she was 5 weeks old she was started having fever and seizure. At that time they diagnosed her with beta strep meningitis with seizures and was hospitalized for a month and a half. They also told me that she may not walk, talk, or even run. She is now 11 years old and walking, talking (a lot), and running with the best of them. The studies and test are there, but they are not 100% accurate. I believe that physical therapy has and had done wonders for her outcome in life. The only problem she has not is short term memory loss. I have also had two boys since my daughter and both of my boys are perfectly fine too no problems with either of them.

well unfortunately no test is 100% because i was tested 2 weeks before having my daughter and tested negative for GBS born November 22 2009 when she was 2 days old we were leaving the hospital and i noticed that she was not acting right so i mentioned it to one of the nurses who blew me off so i mentioned it to another nurse they took her back to the nursery they noticed that she had a rapid respatory rate then they did x rays, bloodwork and 3 spinal taps she ended up in ICU for 3 weeks but has made a full recovery
