My baby has been in the NICU since she was born infected with GBS

If the mother is positive for GBS they will test the baby at birth. However it is not 100%. I was GBS positive and my daughters test after she was born was negative. I was induced and given the antibiotic prior to that and during the whole labor and delivory process. When she was 5 weeks old she was started having fever and seizure. At that time they diagnosed her with beta strep meningitis with seizures and was hospitalized for a month and a half. They also told me that she may not walk, talk, or even run. She is now 11 years old and walking, talking (a lot), and running with the best of them. The studies and test are there, but they are not 100% accurate. I believe that physical therapy has and had done wonders for her outcome in life. The only problem she has not is short term memory loss.

Can i ask what test you had? I had gbs on my last baby and im planning on having a test on this pregnancy but if its not reliable i dont want to waste my time.

yeah they said the same thing to us about the development problems in the future but so far she has already hit her mildstones for her age so far so good. Im glad to hear that she has come home it is one of the hardest things in the world to have to "visit" your own baby but what doesnt kill us makes us stronger. They really should start listening to us because mother knows best.

We are home now. She was actually discharged just a few days after that post. She is doing wonderful now. The doc says we aren't completely out of the woods yet cuz there could be developmental issues that they won't be able to see until she is older.

What is it with these nurses huh? We had the same thing happen to us. About 15 mins before she really started having serious breathing problems I had called the nurse and told her something was wrong. She said our room was just too cold and turned up the heat. The nursery nurse ended up needing to do her rounds right after that and thankfully came in my room about 30 secs before my baby turned into a blueberry. They should really learn to listen to us mommies.

I know exactly how you feel i went through the same thing i was tested negative 2 weeks before having my daughter on Nov. 22 everything went fine with labor but on the day i was supposed to discharge i noticed that she wasnt acting right and i told one of the nurses who didn't pay any mind then when my husband arrived to take us home i was almost temped to just leave but something was telling me not to leave so i mentioned it to another nurse who then took her back to the nursery and they noticed a rapid respiratory rate and on the x rays they noticed alot of fluid in her chest after blood culture and spinal taps they found bacterial spinal meningitis cause by GBS she spent 3 weeks in NICU and we also had good days and bad days.
