Hello! I am new to this site. Gordon-Hjalmar is my first child, born on August 30th, 2008. He was born at 3.6Kg (about 8lbs). Around 4 months, he was 5.2Kg (11.5lbs) which was a little on the low side so we started him on one portion of cereal per day in addition to his regular breast feedings. He started losing weight so the barnmorske (baby nurse) suggested 2 portions. He still kept losing weight. Around 5 months, his weight was 4.8Kg (10.5lbs) so we started back and forth trips to the hospital for testing. He is active, playful, and happy. He is rolling over, sitting up, putting weight on his legs. He is curious about everything and loves to figure out how his toys work, how to get them to make sounds, etc. He laughs and smiles a lot. He just is not growing. He loves his cereal, vegetable mush, fruit puree, and breast milk. The only thing he wont eat is formula and he will not take anything from a bottle no matter what we try. Now we are waiting on tests for his adrenal glands and thyroid and are about to have an intestinal biopsy done to find out if he has Celiacs Disease (glutton intolerance). He is about to be 6 months old next week and has gained 1/2 lb putting him back at 5.0Kg (11lbs) but it is still very small for his age. It has been such a stressful past 6 or 7 weeks. We went to a Mommy and baby group last week and all the babies his age are practically double his size (8.2-9.5Kg or 18-21lbs) My poor sweet boy! It is a nightmare watching my baby shrink before my very eyes. Thanks in advance for any info, help, advice, just listening to me vent. xo, Colleen

Thank you for your comments. After months of testing and lots of emotional ups and downs we finally know what the problem is. We just recieved verification yesterday that my son has cystic fibrosis. We have are seeing the CF specialists now to learn everything we can and begin a plan for treatment. It isn't what we wanted to hear and it makes me quite sad but at least we now know what we are dealing with.

I think the most frustrating thing is not knowing what the cause is. How can we fix something if we do not know what we are combating? I feel so helpless. He did only start losing weight when we added cereals to his breast milk diet but he has grown slowly since he was born and has been below the dashed line on the growth charts for months. They did take blood tests but the results did not come out conclusive so they want to do the biopsy of his intestines as well as a few other tests. My little boys fingers and hands and feet have had so many needle pricks from all the blood they have drawn. They seem to be testing for everything and nothing has come back as wrong yet (other than the fact that he is half the size he should be). I hope we have some answers soon. Thanks for the good wishes and all...it is nice knowing I am not the only one out there going through this. xo, Colleen

Good luck with the testing! From what you said it sounds like he only started losing weight after he began eating cereal. Does that seem correct? If so maybe it does have to do with an allergy to the cereal. To test my daughter for celiacs disease they just drew blood. Is that a possibility? It sounds much less invasive than an intestinal biopsy.

I wish you the best,

Holly

He sounds a lot like Jonas. We do finally have Jonas growing, but very very very slowly
