My daughter was just diagnosed with Failure to thirve which I have to say is a bunch of horse poop. She weighed 6lbs 1.7ozs at birth and is now 16months and doing the stuff of a 2yr old and her speech is of a 18month old, her only problem is that she weights 17lbs. We just had an appt with a nutritionalist and she said that are daughter has a double wammy agienst her because I was a tiny baby/kid and my husband weights in at 125 (on a heavy day) and is 5ft 9in tall, and both of our family has a history of being lite weight and my side is short. They want her intaking a little over 1000 calories a day! I am now suppose to mix her whole milk with carnation on top of the chocolate syrup I put in it... and I am suppose to finish weaning her. The nutritionalist says I should focus more on sugarish carbs rather then pasta carbs. (I am afriad with all the sugar they want her intaking she will end up with diabities:( )

They gave me a month to make her gain weight to their liking. We go back on Tuesday to find out if we were sucessful. They said if we were not then more then likely they will start testing my daughter and do x-rays of her bones to make sure nothing is wrong.

This whole process is so stressful and a pain... the doc that diagnost her with FTT didn't even consider my daughter's family history or that she NEVER sits still.

I am interested to her from other moms with similar stories and or advice from anyone.

My son is FTT also he is 4 now and weighs 32 lbs and is only 37 inches tall. He eats all the time and is VERY active. He also doesn't sleep much but we have not had any testing besides an Xray of his hand to figure out bone age. If you don't agree get second opinion. It sounds like you have an advanced little girl and you shouldn't be worried. You're very lucky since my son is developmentally delayed all around. Also tried to get the good carbs and protein in before the bad carbs. Remember you are teaching her eating habits she will have all her life so it needs to be healthy eating also not junk.

Just a little FYI alot of doctor's don't take family genes into consideration point it out to the doctor so that they will consider it she most likely should not have been diagnosed with it but do all the testing just to make sure they tried to say my youngest had it but he is missing a growth hormone not ftt hope this helps

My daughter is 25 months and has been FTT pretty much since birth. She is a happy healthy little girl that is very active and has always been advanced on her milestones. She was born little (5 pd 9 oz) but has always been a good weight for her height.

I also wouldn't recommend to many sugary foods but would suggest the lots of proteins and dairy. avocado and cheese are good ones to try and encourage her to drink as much full cream milk as you can without compromising the rest of her diet.

The drs have never taken into account that I myself are only tiny and it looks like my 5 month old is going to go down the same track. If you ever want to talk just drop me a message and I will reply 1st chance I get. I hope that everything starts getting better soon :)

My son was preemie and weighed 3lbs 2oz at birth so we definately had to work HARD at getting him to gain weight. We were adopting him through foster care so for the first ten months I hated the care he was getting due to medicaid so we started paying out of pocket and switched to a pediatrtion we really felt cared about our son and finally started getting useful advice that coencided with our needs as the parents. I guess I am saying this to encourage you to seek differant care, a second opinion, if you feel what the current doctors are saying is not working.
I also agree that I would be wary of the focus on sugers, even carbs in general. That was one thing our pedi explained to us; that overall if he was just putting on fat as weight it wasn't really any healthier then his being underweight. She focused us on getting him to eat protiens and thus build muscle and gain muscle weight. Things like peanut butter, yogurt, fish, chicken, etc. At just shy of 4yrs old he still only weighs 32lbs on a good day, is 41in tall and has ZERO body fat, but he is healthy, extremely active ind very strong. His pedi has even said that most likely his bio parents were skinny too. He has texture issues and so food intake is still and always will be a struggle and we continually moniter what he is eating to make sure what he does take in is what his body needs, and that usually means meats/dairy, veggies, and fruits before carbs and sugers. My friend is a nutrionist that worked with WIC and she "approved" very much what we were doing. All the research I have done makes me question the idea of gaining weight from suger intake.
Also yes, FTT is just a lovely lable for we have know idea what is causing this! ;-) I hope things get better soon!

my son wouldn't put weight on for about 3 months at a time when he was born (he weighed 6lbs 12 oz). Some months he would put on 1/2lb others he would either lose or put none on. He was diagnosed with severe reflux and has several other problems. All too often they say he's too small. he is 2 yrs old now and i have to dress him in 12-18 month clothes and some of them don't fit properly. I think you need to go with your gut feeling. As long as your daughter is getting her veg and fruit daily and also she seems to be like any normal 2 yr old. xx
