Hi,
I hope its ok that I've joined this group.
My son is now 21 weeks old, he was delivered at 33 weeks by c-section after I was admitted to hospital at 32 weeks because an ultrasound showed that his stomach growth had slowed. The monitored us until the day before he was delivered when the call was made that he'd have to come.
He was in Special Care for 4 weeks, and we managed to get his birth weight up from 4lb1oz to 4lb10, but in order to do that they started putting a fortifying powder into my expressed milk. They didn't send us home with any, and for awhile his growth seemed to be ok, although he dropped a bit on the weight charts.
At 12 weeks (actual) I was exhausted and we had a week or so of him having a formula feed at night, but it made him badly constipated, one time he went 6 days with no movement, then the next time it got to 8 days and I stopped the formula, it took him another 4 days to go (plenty of wet nappies though) the health visitor wasn't worried and neither was the doctor.

Without getting his red book out and double checking his weights I can't really give a proper timescale, but about 6/7 weeks ago Henry weighed 9lb6oz on the health vistors scales, it was then about 3 weeks until he was weighed again but this time was at the weigh in clinic, and he came up as being 8lb11oz, I looked shocked, so the health visitor went and got her scales, and he came up at 9lb4oz on them (so even going off of the two weights on the same scales he'd dropped) I've concluded that the health visitors scales are slightly out because a few other scales since have given us a lower weight.

Anyway I'm rambling..,. In the last few weeks we've had Henry weighed weekly. He went from 8lb11 - 8lb13 - 8lb15.5 - 9lb
The 9lb is this weeks weight. That gain is with a bottle of Aptimil Comfort formula as well as 2/3 hour breastfeeds normally lasting about 45mins.
The 8lb15.5 weight was last week at the hospital, because I am now concerned about his lack of gain, and the loss that he had, combined with this ongoing constipation. The consultant told us to start giving him a bit of baby rice with 10mls of milk twice a day. Which he loves, but right as we'd managed to get him to poo maybe once every 3/4 days its now been 8 days since he last went and nothing I do seems to be helping.

Is any of this familiar to anyone?

We're back at the hospital on the 4th October for a follow up with the consultant, but I just feel like something isn't right. Up until we did the formula at 12 weeks he was putting on 4/5oz a week, then all of a sudden its like something has switched and thats it really slowed weight gain.

Is there anything I should be asking for? Any advice you can give is appreciated.
Once again I hope its ok that I posted in here, just you girls seem to possibly have the knowledge of what I should be asking.

Thank you for reading, sorry its so long and a bit muddled!

I dont know if itd help im new at this, but my baby is missing a part of her bowls. The doctor put pectin in my breast milk to slow the process down so her bowls can take in more nutrion. U can get that at grocery store with the cannon stuff.

Hayley, My son weighs about 21 lbs 12 oz. now and he is 21 months old today. He was born at 5 lbs 7 oz and at 6 mo was 13 lbs and at 15 mo 17 lbs. We have battled reflux with him so we see a gastro dr. and he is wonderful. Please feel free to post any questions you might have I have lots of experience with developmental dr's, dieticians, GI drs, and therapists for feeding problems. If your son hasnt had a bowel movement in 10 days you might ask about possibly seeing a GI dr just to see what they say. Most GI dr's have dieticians in office and can work with you to see what works best for your son. He might just be having some digestive problems. Make sure you are stern about speaking with specific specialists because I have learned that sometimes you don't get the answers you need without being firm. Again, please feel free to ask me anything you want I don't mind at all. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply Jennifer!
We had an appointment today with a consultant and it was pretty pointless because they couldn't find his hospital notes so we've got to go back next week and see what his weight gain is, and he said he'd want to start doing tests.
Hopefully next week I might start feeling like we know a bit more, but this week he'd only gained 1oz, and he hasn't done a bowel movement for 10 days, so who knows!
How much does your son weigh now if you don't mind me asking? x

I understand your frustration I had a 34 weeker and he had a heart condition and we have struggled with weight gain since he was born and he is now 21 mo. My son was on Neosure first which was for preemies (its higher cal.), then on Similac Alimentum with a powder added at a specific recipe to make it a 30 cal. formula. He has battled reflux and thats why he was on the Alimentum. I can't remember what the powder was but it did work putting him on a regular feeding schedule and higher calorie formula. You might ask your dr. if you can speak to a dietician and maybe talk to a developmental pediatrician. If you have trouble with feeding you can ask to speak to a therapist which can help also. I know how stressful it is to get them to gain weight with no success, we have battled it for 21 mo with my son, it will get better.
