Need a change in meal/snack plans for my 21 month old

It seems that my 21 month old son's diet is my biggest worry these days. I have an almost 5 month old too who naturally takes up a lot of my time and energy so I find myself resorting to a lot of frozen or canned foods for our meals. I am also on an unpaid mat leave so money has never been tighter.

I NEED HELP! Does anyone have any ideas on what I can offer him?

I was always a stickler for no junk food (or limited it to a special treat) but it seems that everyone everywhere wants to offer it to him. It's so hard to say no when all of the other kids his age are eating it in front of him. (including my husband) Very frustrating!

Yes I know how you feel. I often feel as if I'm the only one who won't let her kids eat junk food. We have joined a group of 10 families who go and buy fruit and veg in bulk every weekend - it makes it unbelievably cheap. We now have an enormous pile of healthy stuff to eat every week so every weekend I make a huge pot of soup and my 3 kids eat it enthusiastically. I whizz it all up so they can't pick out things they don't like. Sometimes I use chicken or various things like lentils, kidney beans and chick peas (garbanzo beans) to change the flavour.

Then I freeze it into portions for myself and hubby to take to work for lunch.

As a single mom I am always looking to save money. Ethnic markets generally have fresh veggies and seafood a bit cheaper than the popular markets. For Example the Asian markets have great prices for seafood.

Hi Christina, I completely know how you feel. I am not very outspoken, so it is sometimes very hard for me to tell people "No, I don't want my child filling up on that". I try to remind myself how unhealthy it is for my child and then that motivates me to tell the people no. I have also tried sitting down with my husband and having a heart to heart w/ him about why I don't want our children eating all the junk and  maybe if you tell him some of the negative effects it will have on his body then maybe your husband will try to hide when he eats the junk food.

Try your local Health Food Store for buying healthy snacks & treats!

I buy my 19 month old daughter her snacks (granola bars, loose granola & nuts), along with treats (jubejubes & suckers). This way she is not left out from treat time but I know she is eating healthy! Makes us both happy & it is not much more expensive then your grocery store.People tend to think that health food is much more expensive but this is not always the case. In my opinion I'd rather pay a bit more knowing what is in the food my daughter is eating! Hope this helps. :)
