Has anyone traveled internationally and still maintained their baby's healthy diet of homemade food? I'm worried about bacteria (e-coli, salmonella, etc.) being present on fruits and veggies while being abroad and the reaction my almost 6 month old baby will have. We will be on an airplane for approx 14 hours, so I'll be taking formula and a banana or two for feedings. Any other foods that would travel well? If you have any advice and experience please share. Any tips for traveling would be great!

I'm not sure at 6 months what you are feeding the baby (it's been awhile for me), but I would say mashed bananas are easiest.  The cereal or oatmeal combined with bottled water, breast milk or formula.  Any veggies can be steamed and mashed or put through a food processor.  Meat yet?  I always just put whatever we had for dinner in the food processor and gave it to my sons.  It depends on what a baby can have at 6 months, but just mash up whatever you eat!  Rice and beans included!  :)

Thanks Kelly! We're going to Argentina, and apparently there is no baby food jars available there (????). They mostly breastfeed and have the rice cereal, but nothing else. I guess they make their own food. I'm going to try to bring some jars and since we're still introducing solids, buy frozen veggies (the fresh ones are not great since the summer there was really bad this past year). We'll see how it goes!

Where are you going? I took my 6-month-old to Tanzania and made my own food there. I had a box of Earth's Best organic rice cereal, which I just added bottled water to. I also brought a good supply of jarred organic baby food just in case I wouldn't have access to a kitchen, which I didn't half the time. Then I bought some apples, cooking bananas, carrots, and spinach from the market. I washed them all well, then peeled and steamed. I bought a KidCo manual food grinder and some Gladware-type bowls with lids. I did a veggie blend in some of the bowls and applesauce in the others.

It is a lot of work though. If you're not going for very long, jarred food is so much easier and less stressful.

If bringing formula try to get the premixed kind or use bottled water. With any cereal use the bottle water as well. Make sure vegetables and fruits are washed with soap and water or peeled. If you can, cook them, which would help kill bugs. Alcohol based sanitizers are great to have on hand!
