when i was 25ish weeks pregnant my sons heart beat was a bit irregular. the dr wanted to check it again in a couple days. when we went back to check it, his hb was appx 240bpm- double what a normal heart beat should have been. we spent 2 and a half weeks at the hospital until his heart converted back to normal. he was very close to the beginning stages of heart failure. once i was discharged from the hosp, i had to go to high risk drs twice a week to get his heart monitored. then at 35 weeks, they induced me and i had a big healthy baby boy with no heart problems. but the pediatric cardiologist instructed me to give him a med for SVT 2x daily for a year.

my fear is that after he stops taking this medication, what if his SVT comes back and how would i notice it?

and if anyone elses baby had or has SVT, would you share your story?

Hi Amanda D., I have a very similar story with my current pregnancy and am wondering how your baby is doing now. My concern is regarding any neurological problems since my baby had SVT at 25 weeks. I'm 30 weeks now and I'm concerned even though the heart rate is under control with meds. I'd love to hear how your little one is doing :)

My daughter was born at 38 weeks, looked healthy and perfect except for the fact that her HR was 230 bpm at birth. We didn't know in utero what the problem was and my doctor felt sure it would convert upon birth. It did not and she was born with 28% heart function. She spent 12 days in the NICU and was diagnosed with Permanent Junctional Reciprocating Tachycardia, a rare SVT. She takes medication twice a day and we hope to fix it with ablation when she's older. She is closely monitored, but has been reasonably healthy. I think you would notice if his SVT came back, our cardiologist says typically off meds it will come back within 48 hrs if it hasn't resolved. You will just need to take his HR I'm guessing. I hope it doesn't come back and he has continued health!

My son had fetal svt and hydrops and was delivered at 32 weeks. He was in neonatal for 6 weeks and on heart meds for a year. He has been off them for a year now and has been officially cleared at having grown out of the condition. It was really scary to be at home with him and not having the drugs but the things we would look out for were floppyess, sleepiness, pale, not eating, just being out of sorts. If you can become familiar with son's normal heart rate and if in doubt listen and if you can't count the rhythm then go to hospital. Were you given a yellow card? We have one which means we would get fast tracked to cardio without needing to wait in A&E. Anyway my son is now a happy healthy little monkey and his difficult start is well behind him. Good luck and I hope all goes well for you and your son.
