Hi all!

My son had his open heart surgery to correct a large VSD and pulmonic stenosis (which may need further intervention) when he was 3 month old. His scar was nice and straight but now it's raised and stiff. When I touch his chest, I can feel it under his clothing. Doctors say it's a keloid scar, I was told that an occupational therapist could help this out. Has it happened to anyone else?

All I can say is that I've had 2 open-heart surgeries and my scar faded with time.

Should it really be an issue? As long as he is healthy then I wouldn't do anything. My daughter had OHS at 5 months and the scar was thin as thread and perfectly straight. I was amazed at how minimal it was. Of course she has two small scars at the bottom of that scar for the tubes that were inserted for drainage. Being a girl I used to worry obsessively about how it will make her feel as she got older. Over time the scar was stretched so it is not the perfect thin line anymore but she loves it. It is her booboo scar and she shows it off. When people freak out over it (usually moms) she says my heart had a booboo and the doctor fixed it! I truly believe its mind over matter. If you view it as a bad thing so will your son. I would think you wouldn't be so worried seeing you have a boy and it is much more accepted for boys to have scars. If you really want to try to minimize it then I would wait til he was older. Being young and keeping a scar from opening or stretching would mean keeping your child sedimentary until it is completely healed. I would wait until your son is older and can help take care of it. Just picking up your child, certain arm movements, or them being on their stomach can stretch the scar.
