What do you think is an acceptable length hike to take a 10 year old on?

Thank you so much, Margie and Velva, for your wonderful advice. I feel much more confident now about taking longer hikes with my daughter. Taking a lot of breaks makes sense, and I can see how it will make it more enjoyable for her. Thanks again!

I hike with 2 10yrs, 1 9yrs, and a 7yrs... we usually do anywhere from 1-3 miles.. just remember to stop and take lots of breaks. Make sure to bring snacks and drinks. We usually stop about 4 times in a hike for 5- 20mins. It gives them a chance to really investigate nature and rest their legs. Otherwise they get whinny and we have to cut the hiking to half.

We have a granddaughter who just turned 10 and she has done hikes as long as 4 miles. She's been hiking with us for several years now. The key is to stop frequently and let her play and rest. If you make hiking an exhausting chore, they won't want to go anymore. Start with short, easy hikes (fairly level), and make sure the area has interesting things -- for kids that means big rocks to play on, trees to climb, etc. Both of our granddaughters love to hike with us. Carry plenty of water and a decent first aid kit just in case.
