My boyfriend and I just took our daughter up to Eagle Creek the other day and went on a hike to Punchbowl Falls. I haven't been hiking in YEARS and discovered I love it! We've decided to start making a habit of it since the weather is getting nicer, but we don't really have any gear. What types of items would you typically need for day hiking and what are the best brands out there? Thanks! :)

we do a lot of family day hikes and I've always found LL Bean's quality to be worth the price for daypacks and foot wear. However, my kids have always hiked in their sneakers or decent boots we've bought 2nd hand since they grow so fast. Same for backpacks, we've been able to find LL Bean or Tough Traveler 2nd hand. We live on the East Coast so both of these brands are 'local' and easy to find at garage sales/goodwill.
We just pack/wear the basics--good footwear, wear layers, aluminum non-leaking water bottles, snacks, dollar store ponchos, bug repellent and sun screen. Since they were little the kids carry their own water, poncho and some small snacks in their own backpacks. Dad and I lug the rest of the food and small first aid kit. We also use our iphones for GPS devices.
