The first year we did it, I was the judge, but from then on, we make it a vote. This year my friend won because it's the first year he has carved where his pumpkin didn't collapse from being over carved, so every one voted him the winner. You could always nominate a different judge every year, that was the way we were originally going to do it. One year I would be the judge, the next year my husband could be the judge, then we would just pick and rotate friends. That way it's fair. It's a lot of fun though!

I love the contest idea, Christine! I can totally see everyone getting into that:-) How do you choose the winner?!

You're welcome! We do pumpkin carving with friends as well. We ended up making a contest out of it and we give a little home made ribbon award to the winner. It started out as just something silly we did but over the years it grew and now our friends really get into it. This year all our competitors were male (the husbands), and they REALLY got into it. Not only did they race for time, but they also all used stencils so their pumpkins would be perfect. It was hilarious! And I love Charlie Brown! My husband had never seen Charlie Brown or Garfield before he met me. I almost fell out of my chair when he told me that. I love that your family makes a meal and an evening out of pumpkin carving. We will have to try that next year. It's a great idea!

Christine I love these ideas! How fun that you've passed along so much for this holiday. You're inspiring me:-) We have a tradition of carving pumpkins and watching a Halloween movie, Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown usually. We invite friends over and make a meal and evening out of it.It's one of my favorite parts of Halloween. We'll have to try Garfield! Thanks for the tips. Clea

Halloween is my favorite holiday so we have lots of traditions in my house, many that were carried through from when I was very young. We always put up the decorations on October 1st. We don't buy costumes from the store, my mom always made me costumes, and now I make my husband and daughter's costumes. Also (I know it's dorky) but we watch Garfield's Halloween Adventure and make vegan pumpkin cookies. That is my favorite part of the Halloween, they are delicious and you can eat a ton of them and not feel guilty!
