Hi there~ I just started the Homeschool Moms community. I'm a homeschool mom to 6 kiddos, and a daughter-in-law. I've been homeschooling for 14 years. I have a son and daughter that have graduated from high school; the rest of my daughters are in 4th, 6th, 10th and 11th grades. My son is married, and my oldest daughter is a freshman in college. Tell us your story, and welcome!

Kathleen: there is no reason why you can't start homeschooling now, I wish I had started when I wanted to instead of waiting until he was 11yrs. I love homeschooling..it has taken a long time to get into a routine and figure out how and what works for us, but if your resdy now, I say go for it. ;)

Can I have some advice on when to start home schooling, please?
I have four kids, three girls and one boy. My husband and I have already decided we would start home schooling when the kids get to high school (age 12-13 or 7th grade in Australia), but after witnessing some very disturbing behaviour and interactions at my kids school from 4th graders, I'm thinking I may want to start it a bit earlier. My eldest daughter is in year 1 and is 7 this year, while my son is in kindergarten and 5yrs old. I was thinking year 2 - at 8yrs old - would be a good time to pull them out and start home schooling.
The main reason I have my heart set on homeschooling is I want my kids to have a real Christian education.. I've never wanted my kids to attend a high school, because of the distraction of peer pressure, but it seems that that all starts earlier than I thought. My 6yr old has already come home asking what sex is, which devastated me (I didn't want her to know that word even existed til they were starting sex ed at 13).

So please help! Any advice about a good time to start homeschooling would be great. Thank you :) :) :)

I have loved homeschooling my children over the years but I always have a hard time when summer comes around cause my kids don't want to do any work but just as a little helpful tip, I found that YouTubing fun videos and just watching them with my kids is a good way to continue their education into the summer. My little one is in preschool at home and these videos are so cute and she couldn't stop singing them all week. It's a cute little online preschool called CHALK Preschool that posts them. Just type CHALK preschool into YouTube and you can find them. We love them over here! Here's the link too! Enjoy!

I am so excited about entering our second year of homeschooling, still nervous but excited. I know God has a great plan for our family I just have to trust!
My daughter is 6 years old and continuing, starting and finishing some "first grade work". My son will begin homeschool "preschool" at 3 this year.

Hi I've just started home school my 11yr old he is in yr 7 (nz schooling).
It's fantastic we both love it, and he is doing so much better than at school. I wanted to home school years ago but did'nt want to have to keep justifing myself to others and seeing the look on their faces when you tell them you home school... then when i moved (not very far but far enough for my boy to have to change schools) i thought screw you guys i'm going to do what we want to do. It's one of the best decisions I've made for my son, and now thinking will home school the little one when he has finished montessori preschool, so still have 4 yrs to go on that one. xxx

Thanks a bunch,It is really nice to be able to connect with other homeschoolers. It is not easy but very fulfilling for parents as teachers and students also, because we are learning from our children too. You are an inspiration too and thank you again, here is to another wonderful, educational, fun and rewarding New Year!

Wow! You are an inspiration. I am homeschooling my twin girls. They are in Kindergarten. I am so happy I am in a position to be able to do this. They love school and I know what they have mastered and exactly what they are with learning. One of my twins already is in first grade English and zipping right along. I plan to homeschool them the entire way through 12th grade.

I am a mother of two boys and an ex-school teacher. I have been homeschooling for two years. I am still new to the process but always knew that homeschooling would be where my boys and I would end up education wise. I love it, we have an organic garden, we compost, make candles, soap and so much more amazing and fun hands on activities that can be incorporated into their everyday curriculum along with the basic subjects:)

I have 3 kiddos and we are going to adopt another one...hopefully within the next 2 years. We'll see how God's plan unfolds for us. I homeschool my two oldest. This is my 4th year. This year I finally feel confident in homeschooling and its becoming a lot easier for me. I also enjoy it alot more. I tend to love learning all these new things too! I have a 4th grader, 1st grader and a 2 year old. It's been interesting watching them all learn and teaching to their different learning styles and learning more about my own!

I have been homeschooling for eight years.  I began teaching my daughter after she completed kindergarted in public school without knowing how to read.  We homeschooled her during first grade, with my  3 1/2 year old son eagerly participating in everything.  At that time we didn't know how long we were going to continue but to just focus on one year at a time.  This helped to relieve a lot of the stress one feels about whether or not you are doing a good job.  At the end of the year we took an assessment of everything that was learned and felt confident enough to continue.  My daughter wouldn't do her schooling any other way.  My son, the social butterfly, wants desperately to attend public but we feel that is the worst reason of all to be attending.  We live in a great neighborhood with many children and grandchildren in the area.  We also have several homeschool families that we get together with several times a month.

As to where we are now, my daugher, age 13, will be finishing eighth grade and my son, age 11,  will finish seventh.  My daughter is also planning out her college education (also done at home) to be a vet tech.  So we are at the threshhold of beginning high school in the fall and trying to determine which classes to concentrate on so that she can work toward her goal.  We have been using ABeka for most studies but for science we may switch to another company more suited to her needs.

My son vaccilates between wanting to manage restaurants (like his Daddy) or own a retail business of some type.  He's got time...

Gerogene,

My advice to you is to find a local homeschool support group. The moms you find there will be invaluable to you. They will be able to give you the encouragement that you need and help you find ways to plug into the homeschool community at large. Through a support group you will learn about opportunities where your children will be able to socialize with others. Believe me, homeschooled children are some of the most social people that I know.

We have not started home schooling yet but we are seriously thinking in that direction.  My children are 18 mos and almost four. I have looked up our state regulations, we more then qualify. What I am looking for is practicle advice on how to start, maybe a good web site. I would also like some advice on how to keep up with the kids social interaction with other kids.

I am in my 17th year of homeshooling. My oldest is now out of college, married and starting her own family. The ones at home are 14,14,10 and 8 so I have several more years left on this journey. While I have not loved every day of our adventure, I am blessed to be able to do this. Our family loves homeschooling and is convinced that it is the best thing for our children. I have a heart for helping new homeschoolers get the encouragement and support that they need to continue on. I remember how intimidating it can be the first few years.

We have a 13 year old daughter (14 on Feb. 3rd) and we started homeschooling her a month after she started grade 6 in 2006. Its been a major adjustment because she had a herem of friends. My daughter chose to become a Christian and all her friends from school dropped off one by one. She has a whole congregation of family/friends, but she doesn't seem to want to socialize much right now. Her grades are mostly 95, but she gets very upset if she gets a 90. She's a perfectionist, an avid reader, and is funnier than most comedians. Problem is she's a big busted blue eyed blonde thats 5'9" and looks alot older than she is! She is extraordinarily mature and intelligent so this also gives off the impression she's older than 13. We do the Independant Learning Centre curricullum. She's had to adjust to her brother (almost 23) moving out this past summer, and her dad becoming a trucker a year ago this past summer. After helping my husband study for the trucking school and dealing with hard financial problems, we decided it was time for me to go back to work. That wasn't the plan in 2006. I don't want Sarah back in Public School. I got my beginners in May (for trucking) even though we couldn't afford the $6000.00 for me to go to the school. I used hubbies books. I plan on taking my Air Brake course in March/April then doing the road test in April. Hopefully (kind of :(  ) I'll be bringing home a paycheck by May. My husbands boss already plans on hiring me, he knows Brian and I want to be team drivers. I'm struggling with the guilt of going back to work, especially with the long hours and unpredictablilty of truck driving.  My daughter has no problems with doing her homeschooling when I'm on the road with hubby, and she has two dogs and three cats at home. I take my Rottweiler (3rd dog) to work. She also has a congregation of friends/family she can spend time with. She refuses to sleep anywhere but home. Being homeschooled, she can go on the road with hubby if she wants, but I won't let her come when I drive (until I have at least 1 yr experience). We're from Ontario, Canada. Just venting I guess, thanks.

Hi, I'm Michelle, a homeschooling mommy of 7. I've been homeschooling since my oldest two were preschool-aged (so about 6.5 years), and none of them have ever attended school. My school-aged kids are 4th grade (oldest two) , 1st grade, and kindergarten, and the rest are 3 years, 2 years, and 4 months old.

I have 2 sons, 4 & 2 who are doing some things from 'My Fathers World'. I love reading what others are doing and how creative everyone seems to be.

My youngest is 14 mos. We started homeschooling because we wanted a christian education and financially it proved very difficult.

Up to three, debating 4... (Anyone want to talk me out of it?) We started homeschooling in Queens out of necessity and are hooked. My kids are 8 (3rd grade officially--he's a little or lottle advanced), 3 and 2 (preschool). I love knowing my kids aren't reared on the propaganda of public schools as well as watching them progress. What greater joy is there--and who better to get them there than a loving parent?

We have 3 kids, and homeschool 2, the oldest goes to public high school. We have home schooled/educated our kids for 9 years. We homeschooled all three for 6 years, then took a two year break before bringing our daughter (9th grade this year) back home. We brought our youngest (5th grade) back home this year. We take it year by year.
