Welcome to the new school year! I hope everything is going well for everyone. This year, our family has made lots of changes. The beginning of last year, with my son in 1st grade, I tried to teach a little each day. My son wasn't ready, so I wound up unschooling him. It is awesome all the learning that took place in our family, even though we didn't crack a (text)book! This year, I am trying to find a balance between book learning and natural learning (aka unschooling). My daughter (typical child, no ADHD) is in Kindergarten, and my son (severe ADHD-impulsive type, and probably Tourette Disorder) is in 2nd grade. I also have a 3 year old I give coloring pages to during "instruction time" I am using Math U See, Bob books for reading, and writing in whatever form it comes in, depending on how severe my son's hand tics are that day. I have also introduced a chore system that the children love (before and after chores, nor really during - LOL). It is really hard to maintain the flexibility, plus consistency, I need to teach a special needs child. Some days, he is "on" and can work through the material quickly. Other days, it is drudgery and I need to seriously pare down my expectations to just one problem or lesson to maintain his confidence. Other days, we purposely don't "do school," for one reason or another.
What changes have you made this year? What are you continuing from last year? What have you found that works? What didn't? What are you most excited about this year? What are some challenges you are dealing with this year?
