I see there are quite a few new members, so I thought I'd create a spot for us to introduce ourselves.

My husband and I live in Illinois with our four kids. I will be 30 at the end of the month. Our oldest son turned 7 in October, our second oldest son turned 5 in October, third is our daughter who is 3 1/2, and our youngest son turned 2 last week. We use the ABeka curriculum, and I am teaching 1st grade to our oldest and preschool to our 5 and 3 year old. I also babysit for a 1 year old in the mornings. I love doing crafts and being involved in a Mom's Bible study group. My husband and I teach the Jr High youth group and are very involved in our church. I am looking forward to getting to know more homeschooling moms!

Hi everyone! My name is Mandy. My husband and I are considering homeschooling our 5 y. o daughter....well I am considering it and trying to convince hubby that we need to at least give it a try. I realize without his support it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to succeed.

Hi, I'm Marianne and I live in northern Florida. I'm married and have 5 children. Oldest lives with her father for the time and she will be 10 in September going into 4th grade, 2nd is my 8 year old son going into 3rd grade, 3rd is my 6 year old daughter going into 1st grade, 4th is my almost 4 year old daughter, and last, but not least, is my 2 year old very energetic son! I'm starting homeschooling this year and it's become very stressful for me! We moved to a new county and the school system here is no good. I prayed and prayed for what to do and this was the best answer I have. My husband and I are both hands on parents and I feel that this will turn into an amazing experience! Even the kids are excited, which makes me excited! I'm not doing an online school since we will have multiple kids at once, and only one computer. Also, I feel that they will learn better with me teaching. I have found many resources that are helpful, however, putting a lesson plan together has proven to be the big challenge so far! :)

Hello everyone,
I'm a mother of two boys ages 7 and 4, and we have a little girl due in December. Currently I home school my oldest using K12.com curriculm. I also work with my youngest on the basic stuff because he technically couldn't enroll in an online school until next year. So far, I've been blessed with two boys who love to learn and enjoy being home with their parents.
We live in SC, and would love to make new friends. :)

Hi, my name is michelle and I have a daughter who is 6yrs old called Jessica, I have been home educating since january 2011 and its the best thing I have done. I love it and my daughter loves it even more. I live in Croydon, London, UK. And don't think much of the schools round here. The deputy head teacher was my daughters classs teacher and she bullied her from the moment Jessica started Year 1. So I withdrew her. Im a qualified teacher and gave up working to do it. If you want to get in touch here's my email michellefarley30@hotmail.com. And that applies to any other mums aswell, would love to have a catch up. xxxx

My name is Jennifer, mom to a 6 yr old son and almost 2 year old daughter. I am new to homeschooling however, I knew I wanted to after seeing the results from other families. My son will be doing a Kindergarten curriculum of math, art, science, handwriting and reading (phonics based). My husband and I chose to homeschool because of the flexibility, positive influence and teaching for his learning style (visual/kinesthetic). My husband has been on board since our son was born. We are very excited about this journey we are taking in the Fall.

Hey, I am erica and I am 23 years old. I have a 4 year old, a 2 year old and another due in december. I will be homeschooling later this summer/fall. I just ordered Before Five In A Row. I am also very drawn to montessori and waldorf but, have been finding it far to overwhelming to make it fit into our lifestyle. So I use a lot of the ideas, our home is montessori + waldorf inspired I suppose!

Hello all, I'm Abby. My husband is military, we are currently stationed in Colorado, and we have discussed at length homeschooling our children. I'm completely new to homeschooling but really feel it will be the best option for our children, who are 3 and 1. I've looked at website upon website and the wealth of information, while helpful is overwhelming. I'm confused as where to start, how to choose a curriculum or what resources to use if I mix and match. I'm here mainly for any advice you would be willing to offer.

(cross posting with other group with same name) Hi. A long post here! I’m relatively new to home-schooling. We tried online schools (OHVA and Connections Academy) with my stepchildren after they had been in city schools, but the curriculum was very nearly the same, still entirely progressive, so I, favoring a (non-neo-) classical approach, found it to be as inadequate as anything. They didn’t like it either, and for different reasons, they have gone back to city schools. My husband and I hope, however, that one may be interested later in some sort of home-schooling, especially since, although he’s in 7th grade, he has been reading at college level since last year, and although the school put him in all honors classes, he is never assigned homework. I haven’t seen his books yet (won’t bring them home) but I suspect they are as outcome-based and watered-down as all his others have been.

Our daughter is 4 and has been having informal/classical home-nursery-school. She is very excited about home-schooling. I explained to her (in simpler terms) the neglect I, a moderately gifted student, endured in school—in kindergarten, required 6 grades of acceleration in reading, 1 grade of acceleration with double pace in math, got only 2 grades of acceleration in reading, the math at normal pace with no testing on facts, later got held back a year in reading despite perfect grades (transferred from the well-regarded-but-sub-standard private school to the slightly worse public school, which had single- but not double-grade subject acceleration and no grade skipping), and received little education in grammar, mensuration, and U.S. history, and none in higher arithmetic, higher algebra, trigonometry, world history, logic, or Latin; not until after the start of 7th grade did I understand I was supposed to learn things in school, I fell behind at least 8 grades in reading, had trouble composing a simple essay, and I barely understood anything in my favorite subject, math. She is exceptionally gifted (made it to 4th-grade reading level with no lessons, then to 6th with 5 months of lessons, is now learning a little Latin too, and wants to go to Oxford and Yale and to become a mathematician), the schools are generally worse now in all the things I mentioned, and the schools in this (different) city are rated second-worst in the state. (The worst are in a nearby city—Yay, Mahoning Valley! ; ) The curricula are all pretty much the same, i.e. LCD, now with NCLB anyway—so mainly it means they are full of violent and ill-bred illiterates, many in gangs.) Obviously, it would be a disaster to send her to one.

My tentative plan: finish teaching myself everything I missed out on, and use mostly Classical Christian Homeschooling (this one: http://www.classical-homeschooling.org ), with the reading list of Great Books Academy (selections are more classical), some substitution of books from The Latin-Centered Curriculum (composition and science selections are probably much more rigorous, science appears to be objective, i.e. non-theological), and supplementation with some classic books found on and in Google Books, Internet Archive, the 19th-Century Schoolbook Collection, and the Dover Book Catalog.

Our general aim can be illustrated by this list:

http://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/undergrad/doc...

and these tests:

http://heartkeepercommonroom.blogspot.co...

My biggest challenges now are differentiating the parts of the curriculum that have been integrated, like, using classic reading books with a pupil at differing levels of reading (6th grade, as I said), analytical (2nd grade?), and elocutionary (1st grade) abilities, and figuring out what books at the higher levels of college-preparatory math use classical methodology, are up-to-date regarding developments in the science, are appropriately rigorous, and have comprehensive coverage of topics. I’d very much welcome advice, most of all from anybody also using a classical non-neo-classical method with a gifted pupil or student.

My name is Linda and I homeschool my 2 daughters - Age 10 & 8. We have been homeschooling since January 2008....when I pulled them from public school.

I run my own Travel Agency from home...Summers Travel.

Our schooling style is very relaxed eclectic. We live in the Cleveland Ohio area...where I've noticed opportunities for homeschoolers taking classes outside the home has increased a lot recently. We like the Metroparks programs at the different nature centers around town and we meet weekly with some other friends for playtime.

I love seeing where everyone is from and enjoy sharing resources. Check out my blog.

Quoting Cheryl:

Hi, my name is Cheryl. My husband, I and my 5 year old son live in Florida. I am still up in the air about homeschooling but it looks very promising to me. My husband is all for me doing it, I just don't know if I'm ready for it or even prepared for it. My son will start Kindergarten in August and 4 weeks later will be 6 years old. Since he can't go to school yet I've been doing Hooked on Phonics with him since he turned 4 and in only 6 months he finished the K and Grade 1 edition. He's reading at Grades 1 and 2 level. So I didn't stop there. I been buying him workbooks starting at Grade 1 and up for Addition/Subtraction and phonics books, etc and he's already completed 3 wookbooks. He absolutely loves to learn. With your experience, do you have any pros/cons with homeschooling. These kids are our future and we want the best for them and whom better can they learn from is with US. My husband's uncle homeschooled they 10 children and all their kids' kids are all homeschool and they too recommended the Abeka curriculum. If I choose to take this huge step, what steps do I need to take to allow me to homeschool my son? Do I need to talk to the school board and get permission first? This is all new to me and a little bit scary and I just want to make sure that I make the right choice. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a whole bunch.

Hi Cheryl,

My name is (Symantha) Sam and I live in Florida- West Palm Beach. I am gong to homeschool my 8 year old son for the first time this year. I also have a 3 year old daughter. In Florida we have to write a simple letter to the Board of Education 30 days around the time your start. 1 year from the day you send that letter they will be looking for one of the following... 1 an evaluation done by a certified teacher. OR 2. test resuts from a standardized test. OR 3 a psycholocial test (more for ADD kids). We must keep good records in a portfolio. THis is for the teacher evaluation and the board of Ed. Teacher evaluators look for only one thing... that your child has improved during the year. The form they submitt has a boxs: 1. they improved 2. they need improvement and ere taking the following steps tp improve OR 3. They have had no progress. Evaluators are easy to find through a homeschooling support group. It is really really easy, if you join up with a group in your area. My friends are in one called PEC Parents Educating Children. I have been to some of their meetings (local parks). They also have sales for their used curriculum and activities and connections to activities that they offer in school like PE class, drama club, and even graduation and prom. The FPEA is one that has a huge homeschoolong confrence in Orlando at the end of May each year. Let me know if you live near me and I can send you even more info. Try and google the FPEA and PEC. If you can't find them I will send them to you.

I'm new to this board but not so new to homeschooling. I'm a single mom with two children 10, and 12. My daughter has Aspbergers, auditory processing dysfunction, sensory dysfunction, low muscle tone, ocd. My son well he's 12. Nobody in any of my family or the kids family like homeschooling, they all hate it! Mostly the best argument they can come up with is socialization. I've just told them I'm homeschooling deal with it. We enjoy homeschooling usually, sometimes I burn out but mostly it's awesome!

I don't know if anyone else has heard of, or does, Flat Traveling, but it's exciting and lots of fun for children of any age. It's based on the Flat Stanley book and kids just soak in eveything they learn. I set up a website for flat traveling when my grandson did them. Looks like I'll be updating it now, for Krystina =)

I'm Helen and I think I have you beat Carol *lol* I'm 59 (turning 60 in Oct.) I may be the only grandmother here who is home schooling grandchildren, but it's something I wouldn't change for the world. I worked with my own children, but not on a permanent basis.

My husband passed away a few years ago and I now live with my oldest daughter and her son. We have a home based business of making non-edible diaper cakes and towel cakes. Our plans are to eventually bring in edible cakes. I've been making edible cakes for years, but not as a business.

I began home schooling my grandson (Matthew, now 18 yrs. old) when he finished fourth grade, in PS. He graduated home school but wanted his GED as well so he went to the community college and took all his testing there for his GED. He passed and graduated (again) with honors. He then went on to take Pharmacy Tech l at our local community college and passed with a 99% average! His plans are to take Pharmacy Tech ll and possibly go on to ECU to study to be a pharmacist.

After a three year break, I will now be home schooling my granddaughter who will be 9 in October. She'll be in fourth grade (according to PS grades) and her 2 year old sister will also be home schooled by me. We will use Unit Studies but she will also work in a test prep book and a curriculum workbook (as I did for Matthew). The workbooks will be used two - three times a week just so I can see that she is staying on, or above, grade level and to comply with NC "recommendations", although it is not required. I will be able to tell if/where she may need help with the workbooks. Emilee will begin actual home schooling when she's a bit older.

Home schooling has been the best thing we could have ever done for my grandson and my youngest daughter said she knows it's the best thing that could ever happen for her girls, Krystina 8 and Emilee 2. I'm really excited about teaching them. We will go year 'round with breaks for holidays, and other events, and three day weekends once a month. Krystina gets very bored after just a week home and wanted to begin home schooling NOW, but we know she needs the break. We'll begin the first part of July, but it's not soon enough in her mind.

We are looking forward to our home school years ahead.

My name is Jennifer and I am almost 35. I have three daughters, Kaitlyn 13, Jessica 9, and Ashley 8. I have one son Aiden, 1. I have been homeschooling my oldest since she started middle school which is the 6th grade. I live just outside of Orlando, FL. I made the decision a few years ago that I would let my children get through elementary school in the regular brick and mortar school, but once they entered middle school I would homeschool all of them. This decision came primarily after some incidents that occured with my oldest being bothered in a physical way at school. The school never handled it properly and she went from an honor roll student acing her FCAT's to low scores and grades. She also started acting out for that age and she just wasn't herself. We originally placed her in the Pre-IB college bound program at the middle school. We figured that if she were around children that were motivated like her things would get better. My daughter is a competitive dancer but wanted to take Art and Band also. So we signed her up for this also. When we received her test scores on her FCAT she was no longer able to be in that program. She had already started the Pre-IB camp and was getting ready to go to the courthouse for a mock trial. She was so excited, so I went to the school to talk to the guidance counselor. She told me that the only option I had was to place her in advanced math and language arts so she would still be with a motivated group. However, because of her scores on the FCAT (which I despise) she had to be removed from Art AND Band. She was going to be placed in an hour of math and an hour of reading intensive on top of her regular classes. This was horribly irritating because my child was being punished because she spent an entire year with a horrible teacher and a kid that molested her. This counselor never told me about the other options available to us, which I found about much later through my aunt who is a grant writer for the Orange County School Board. Anyway, I told the counselor that I was going to take my daughter and homeschool her. The counselor told me that I was teaching my daughter to be a quitter. I told her that the school district and state were taking away the children's motivation to stay in school. We parted ways on a very tense note. I do not like being talked to like that at all. The State of Florida is horrible when it comes to education and I hate it. Our Governor gave me a lame excuse involving race for the use of the FCAT and for some reason the decision is always made to constantly draw funds from our education. Homeschooling has been a life saver. I use a combination of Florida Virtual School (which is terrific) and lesson plans. My daughter's grades have been awesome. She is also absorbing everything without the stress of being in the class with loud students and teachers that can't help because they are trying to control the class. She is actually retaining more and is feeling more confident in her studies. Because we are in the homeschooling are, we do not have to take the FCAT. If I choose to, I contact the district and make arrangements. I know for a fact that I will be homeschooling my other children. It is the best way.

I am homeschooling my first grader - we started on 11/4/08. We are using the Moving Beyond the Page interdisciplinary curricula for language arts, science & social studies, and the RightStart curriculum for math. My son is a gifted student & we found that the public school didn't have any provisions for him were unwilling to work with us. My background is in Spanish ed, and I'd always sworn that I wouldn't homeschool... I should never say never, because here I am, and I am loving it. My son is loving it! My husband is loving it & we definitley feel like it's one of the best decisions that we've ever made.

Hi. I'm cara, mother of 4 boys (Caspian 7 - doing 2nd/3rd grade, Emeth 5 - doing K, Corneilus 2 1/2, Archen 7 1/2months). We started doing unschooling/letter of the week kind of stuff with Caspi when he was 2 or 3 and haven't stopped since. I got kind of discouraged and burnt out last year my first official year of trying to teach two grades at once: 2nd and pre-school. This year has been better because I think Emeth was more ready for it and we've been doing Galloping the Globe all together along with their regular Math( Horizons & Math U See) and Language Arts(LLATL).

I've started gathering my curriculum for next year. We'll continue with the same Math and LA and our core unit study will be American Story 1 from Winters Promise. I'm hoping to add some pre-school activities for Corny too, but we'll see how that goes. Potty training is the first priority with that one.

I guess my biggest issue is trying to work with the big ones and give the little ones the attention they need. Archie is going to be moble soon and putting everything in his mouth so keeping supplies like MUS blocks away from him and still accessable for the others is a challenge. Also I love to plan but staying motivated in the day to day activities is tough. I'm glad to have found a group to share ideas with and find support.

Thanks in advance.

I'm Sharon and I currently live in NC w/my 2 kids. My dd went to public K for a few months and had the most horrible experience... she was to the point of tears every night with homework and stomach aches every morning not wanting to go. So I pulled her out and we haven't looked back. We later found out she has dyspraxia, severe visual tracking problems, sensory integration problems and possible dyslexia. We use RightStart Math, Story of the World, Headsprout, Elemental Science, All About Spelling, and some Rod & Staff. For PE she goes to gymnastics and does occupational therapy. She is now 7 and is slowly beginning to show improvement. My ds just turned 4 and is quickly gaining on her in his reading and math skills. I don't do anything formal with him yet, but he seems to be learning by osmosis just by listening in on his sister's lessons. He's doing simple addition, spelling 3-letter words, and is beginning to read.

We also belong to a WONDERFUL homeschool group that meets every week, has field trips, 4-H club, chess club, public speaking, Presidential Fitness, science and art fairs, and so many other great opportunities to let the kids shine and continue to grow in more than just academic ways. It really is a blessing to know all the families that belong.

I may soon be a single parent, so I am trying to find ways to continue keeping my kids at home with me. I work in my church nursery, teach a homeschool class for a MOPS group, am "on-call" for the child-care room in a local gym, and sell Usborne Books so I won't have return my dd to public school.

Hello everyone!  My name is Melissa and I am mommy to B 4 and a G 8mths.  I have been thinking about homeschooling  a lot these days, so I want to know as much information as possible.  My son goes to preschool now and although I love his teacher I have this nagging feeling that I could be doing more.  He doesnt seem to be thriving in a "traditional" school setting.  I have been thinking about using the Charlotte Mason format because he loves to read, but again we have not committed to anything.

Hopefully nobody minds me being here, because I am trying basically to homeschool myself first before taking this huge, life altering plunge.

We live in Granger, IN and have 5 children (with #6 due in Aug). We have four girls (19, 17, 7, 5) and one boy (13 months). We've been homeschooling for 7 years.  We use mostly Abeka, but also Saxon Math and Apologia Science (for the older ones).

We homeschool for religious reasons.  Our older two used to attend a private Christian school, but when we decided to have our third child, I quit working and we've been homeschooling ever since.

Our days are busy, our lives full; but God has given me strength, wisdom, and patience to do what only He could do. Our family is much closer to one another and my children show love and kindness to one another (most of the time).

I love gardening. My time is usually spent tending to the flowers: taking many pictures and planting more daylilies and hostas.

Hey there! I'm a mother of 3, B16, G15, G13. We do American School of Corr. We really like it, it has really freed me up to get more of my own work done! We have recently moved to the country and are starting a small farm, working to produce our own food and breeding animals to sell. We are having a lot of fun with this and are really looking forward to this summer and getting more involved in outdoor activities :) My husband and I have been married for 17 yrs and counting!!!

Hi, My name is Jess and I am 28.  My husband and I have four children so far (Erin aged 4 1/2, Billy aged 2 1/2, Christopher aged 17 months and Anna aged 8 weeks) and we live in a small country town in Tasmania Australia.  I home schooled myself during my highschool years and went on to Uni where I trained as a teacher.  There is a LOOOOONG list of the reasons we choose to homeschool and I don't have the time to type it out now - but suffice to say we love it and Erin is disappointed when we don't do "school work" in a day.  Our style is fairly eclectic and unique, but we are influenced my Charlotte Mason and Montessori in the way we choose to do things

Hi.  My name is Danielle, and I'm home schooling our 4 children.  We have 3 daughters ages 7, 6, and 4.  And, our son is 2.  We just moved to Connecticut from Missouri, so we've had to adjust to some changes in our schedules.  I love that I get to teach my kids in the ways that I know they learn best.  We have so much fun.  And, we get to work on our own time schedules.  It's great!  My husband gets to do some teaching on the weekends when he's home.  He enjoys it too.

Hi! I'm Holly. I live in Newberg, OR. My hubby and I will have been married 20 years this year! We have three daughters ages 17 (graduating this year!!), 14 and 12. We've been homeschooling for 5 years. Prior to that our girls went to both public schools and private schools (as finances allowed). I swore I could never homeschool, and yet here we are! It's only through God's grace! We use a combination of Sonlight and My Father's World with lapbooking. We love it and my girls never want to go back to school. Our oldest will be going to Montana Wilderness School of the Bible in the fall - she was just recently accepted! Yay! Boy does that make me feel validated! Like I really can do this after all! :-)

Hi! I'm Lisa. My family currently lives overseas but we will be returning to the US soon. I've got two sons. I'm pre-schooling the oldest now and hope to continue after our move. We're working on reading, writing and some beginning math...so far, so good!
