I'm looking for ideas on how to start teaching my 22 month old son. He catches on to things really fast, but does not like to sit still. He loves to learn through activities. I'm at a complete loss as to where to start and how. We really don't want our kids growing up in the public school system and so I really want to make homeschooling a success. I need and WELCOME any ideas and suggestions.
Thanks!

I'm not a big fan of TV, but Leap Frog make a video that is called Letter Factory. We bought it for my daughter when she was about 2 and I played it while sitting with her and she knows ALL the letters and there sounds and is beginning to read at 4 yrs old.

Hi Kimberly, Not sure where you are located but Usborne Books has books that "Make Finding Out Fun" you can check them out at www.kidsbookscanada.com My grandson loves their sticker books and flash cards. He has been using them since he was two and now knows his shapes colours and lots of abc's and numbers. We have started with their Very First Reading series which is a paired reading series for parent and child. They are so much fun and he loves Pirate Pat! A huge portion of the Usborne clientelle are home schoolers and they have books for Toddlers to Teens. Hope this helps!

Do your kids like games like "paper mario" or really anything with dialog. I'm not suggesting putting them on Nintendo all day but when my son (now 6) was learning to read his uncle got him some games. And I got sick of "Mommy read this please" every two minutes. So I said if you want to play it - you read it. That helped with the "encouragement".

For the toddler I think you are head on. Just daily experience and play are great ways of learning. If you want "materials" hand made flash cards are great. Cut out some pics and name them "green car, blue car, etc." That way he/she doesn't confuse cars as green. Use several things that are the same but different. This is also a great categorizing tool. :) Good luck.

Have you seen the commercials for "Your Baby Can Read"? My kids are already 6, and the system is for babies thru 5 yrs, but I think if I would have seen that when my kids were babies I would have gotten it. My son just doesn't like to read and I think that if he could have learned when he was a baby, it wouldn't seem like work to him now and he would enjoy it.

I used to teach preschool for two year olds. The most important thing is to make it fun and interactive. Sing songs, read books and play a lot. Kids learn so much through what we see as just playing. One fun thing to try is to do a color of the day (I did week when I was teaching). You can wear clothes, eat foods, do crafts and look for things that celebrate each color. Another key concept for this age is sorting and organizing. they can divid objects by small, medium, large or by colors or whatever. You can do patterns car, lego, car, lego etc. Don't push the learning. It should happen naturally while you play. Kids that age often come and go for a few minutes at a time. The most important thing is to have fun.
