Can anyone tell me what it's like to live and homeschool in Texas (DFW)? We're getting ready to move there from Montana with our four kids.

I am in the DFW area, we have a lots of homeschooling groups for the area and tons of extra-curricular activities that cater to homeschooling families. There are yahoo groups and group buys, group meet-ups with discounts to different learning locations. I love living in this area and homeschooling, even though we are just starting out. One of the best things about homeschooling in Texas is the freedom we have to do so without being constantly challenged by the local school districts. In Texas homeschooling families are viewed as private schooling.

Howdy! Check out www.nthen.org. We have lots of support groups and many resources. Texas is one of the easiest states to homeschool in. Do you know what area of DFW you'll be looking at?

Thanks, everyone, for the responses! Sounds like homeschooling in Texas won't be much different from homeschooling in Montana. That's a relief!

I homeschool in Texas. It's great. The only requirements are that you submit a letter of intent to the school your child would attend (if you were sending him/her) There is no testing requirement, no records necessary, nothing. It's super easy to homeschool in Texas.

Hey Conna, thanks for inviting me to this, its COOL. I think the Home Education Magazine (or HEM) that I subscribe to has a website that has links to each state. I was looking in to Michigan and Massachusetts two years ago when we thought Lon was gonna get jobs there, and it seems that was the resource I used to find out about the laws in each state. You could also just google 'home school laws by state' or some such thing and see what you get, there are some pretty helpful sites out there, and then alot of times, each state will have their own website or links to forums etc, so you can talk to whole groups of Texas people, etc. We are sure gonna miss you guys, I'm glad you are still planning to come to camp every summer - will EB still work there?

My brother's family homeschools in Texas. I don't know a lot about it, but I know the laws there are not very strict. They live in El Paso.
