Earth Hour is being celebrated in a record 150 countries and territories and 6494 towns and cities to send the message that our combined efforts are needed to change our future to one that is sustainable.

Will you be celebrating? any special plans??

We had a look outside last night, and it didn't seem like many in our area did it. I would have liked to see, at the very least, the street lights go out for an hour.......

We turned everything off and the family played board games by candlelight :) We actually did it for 2 hours instead of one because we were having so much fun!

Big and wonderful change is seeing the impact that just 1 hour has on the earth. For instance, here in Ontario the energy we saved was 4% or 560 megawatts. This drop is equivalent to the average peak energy needs of a city the size of Brampton, which is the ninth largest city in Canada and has an approximate population of 600,000. I think that's impressive.

There are huge celebrations here in Toronto. A candle walk. the Science center is holding outdoor activities from 7-10pm. Last year there was singing and small communities uniting for change in parks, downtown streets, local patios and more. It feels good to know you're a part of something and it shows people that even a small change can make a big difference if we all do it.

At least I'm not the only one who hadn't heard of it.

We don't really do it in the US. I only heard a buzz about it here in Canada. They're still talking about it on Global BC this morning, but GMA didn't say much.

It's really more of a symbolic thing than anything else IMO. I walk everywhere unless it's a long drive down a busy highway (Ie: my MIL's 2hrs north of me, Walmart, the mall and the libraries) We hardly use lights during the day and I do all my laundry in cold water. I do enough without shutting my lights and computers and everything else off for an hour.

BTW, if you do live in BC Save on Foods and Home Depot are giving 10$ rebates on a certain type of phillip's lightbulb.

And did you know that Todd Sampson (yes of Gruen Transfer) was one of the brains behind it? Nice to put a face behind it too :-) I love Todd ;-)

Honestly I only heard about it from another board. I'm not turning off everything because I read with the TV for background noise and my husband needs both computers on for work But the Xbox is off, the toaster and the microwave are unplugged and our lights are off everywhere except for the small lamp next to my couch. And it's only 7:55pm PST

We go to bed with all lights off at 830 well Damo does and I stay up sometimes but often just go to ebd.

I'm so excited earth hour is now across the world!

It started here in Sydney Australia, so we kinda feel parental.

PS to those people who say "I can't be bothered because I always recycle" WTF?? That is pretty lame. You can do your recycling AND keep your electricity down, not just for an hour a year too.

I know a guy who goes home and turns everything on because he doesn't believe in environmentalism...he thinks it's propaganda

Thanks Sally, yes that is very true. ;)

Ma B. Yeah but I am on a plan (so I don't get a $2000 bill in March, from the winter), so I pay the same every month. It only changes in January, depending on whether we used less or more, the previous year. ;)

I pay $325/month. **sigh**

I am like you Jen. I try to live as carefully as I can everyday. Which is why I recycle absolutely everything....oh and the city makes me! lol

However, by 8:30pm we only have a lamp, T.V and PC on everyday, anyhow. Maybe I will turn the lamp off? **wink wink**

My daughter and I always do something. My husband is usually in bed. The one year we went to the local Timmy's and drank hot chocolate while watching the town turn to darkness. Then we went thru the neighbourhood to see who was and wasn't participating. I wish it was warmer. I remember the year of the summer blackout around 2003?? It happened just before dinner. All my neighbours and myself met on my back porch. We pooled our food and had a huge BBQ. Being the funky person I am I have old lanterns and candles. We lit the whole porch up with candle light and opened some wine. We talked and laughed and rocked our wee babies. It was sooooooo quiet and peaceful. It goes to show that when forced to slow down or in this case STOP. You really do connect on a deeper level with the ones close to you because there is nothing else to do....no where to be.....and nothing distracting you. Simply beautiful!!

This year we hope to have a fire in the back yard but it is suppose to get very chilly tonight. Maybe cuddling up with that someone special by the hue of candle light is just what is in order!!

I'll be turning as many of my lights as I can get away with. Other than that, I probably won't be doing too much. I already recycle and compost, PLUS I actually work for an environmental non-profit. So I feel like I do my part. :)

No, I will not be celebrating. ;)

I already go way out of my way recycling. We recycle everything from organic, to plastic to cardboard to cans. I pay way too much for my electricity. I will be keeping it on.
