My 2.5 month old son was diagnosed with mild to moderate hypospadias and chordee after birth. On the recommendation of our pediatrician, we went to see Dr. John Gearhart, a pediatric urologist at John Hopkins in Baltimore Maryland when he was 5 days old. We were told to go back for a visit at 6 months and then schedule surgery for our son at 10 months.

I've been searching online to try and find reviews about this pediatric urologist and I'm only coming up with six or seven. Although most of the reviews are good there are two concerning his hypospadias surgeries that say the surgeries were "failures". Needless to say I'm concerned.

For those mothers that have already chosen urologists and gone through the surgeries I would appreciate any advice on how you decided on the urologist and any resources you might recommend.

If any of you have experienced "successful" surgeries and would recommend your pediatric urologist please let me know. My husband and I would be willing to have a consultation with them even if they are out of state.

Thanks in advance! I'm very happy to have found such a wonderful support group.

My son had his surgery at 6 months and his doctor was Hans Pohl at Children's Hospital. He swirled out of Arlington and DC. My sons surgery was very successful with no complications and I would highly recommend Dr. Pohl.

I'm so glad it worked out well for your family. We are praying that our little one's surgery doesn't have any complications either.

No one mentioned talking to him about the operation but my husband and I discussed it. We decided that we will mention it when he is older and ready to have children since this condition can run in the family. It doesn't look any different than other boys so we don't see it as an issue. I actually didn't realize how abnormal it looked until after he had the surgery and it heeled. I am so glad we got it done and don't have to worry about it any longer.

We see the urologist in 1.5 months when he will be 6 months. The urologist told us that he wants to wait until he is 10 months due to the risks associated with anesthesia and babies under 10 months. We were told he has a mild to moderate case, I guess we will know more after his 6 month visit. My son has not had to have the testosterone injections. After your sons surgery did the anyone at the hospital suggest at what age you should talk to your son about the operation? Thanks again for your input!

How long before his surgery? My son had severe hypospadias as his urethra was at the base of his penis. So the doctor told me before hand he may have to do it in 2 surgeries but as it turned out he got it done in just (1) 2.5 hour surgery. Does your son have to have the testerone injections before as well? My son had to have 2 injections at 6 weeks and 3 weeks before the surgery to increase the size and give the doctor more skin to work with.

Thanks Adrien for responding! Are there any tips you could give me in preparation before my son's surgery?
