Questions about operation on 10 month old - anyone help? x

Hi

My son is due to have the surgery in about three weeks. I have heard a few conflicting things and wondered what other people had found. I rang the ward and they said that if he has a catheter then he will have to stay in for 7 days until it is removed but when we saw the consultant he said 3 days and then we would come back into have it removed. Also lots of people have said that their consulatants said it was better to wait until around 18 months - 2 years for the operation and i'm not sure why they all seem to have it at different ages. My sons opening is about half way up and the foreskin hasn't closed properly. Also we are abit concerned as since he was born he has had constant ear and chest infections - we are waiting to see a specialist about this to check nothing underlying - i'm worried that maybe he shouldn't have the operation until he has been checked because of anaesthetic?

I am so worried about him having this done - have read lots of stories on the web about babies being in lots of pain for months after - has anyone had this happen to them?

My son had his done at 13months. Since it was not a life threatening urgent condition, she likes to wait until they are over 1 before they are put under anesthesia. His was a mild repair that took 3 hours, and he did not have a catheter so it was a outpatient procedure.

I think it is not good if the patient has a chest problem...
pls. ask the doctor about that

Hi,

My 3yrs old son had his operation last june25,2012,we got out to hospital and he still have the catheter in him,,,doctor said we will come back tomorrow for the dressing....catheter will stay for one week i guess!
Doctor said the sooner will be more okay for hypospadias babies...

My son is okay now,but had a hard time sleeping because of the pain!

My son had a surgery to correct a penoscrotal hypospadias and he had the catheter for 7 days. He left the same day. Most surgeries in the US are now outpatient surgeries. Although it is no fun to take care of a child with a catheter, I imagine being in a hospital setting may be also very difficult. About chest and ear infections, this seems unrelated, but I am no doctor.

If you have to care for the catheter at home, please remember to be very careful everytime you open the diaper. The catheter sometimes gets stuck in the diaper and you really don't want to pull it out.

Good luck with the surgery and please keep us updated in the progress.
