While this doesn't directly relate to vaccinations, it's another health topic for newborns that I feel very strongly about: Circumcision.
Nick (my husband) told me yesterday about a friend of his whose sister recently had a baby boy. They decided to have him circumcised, and the doctor made a mistake, causing the baby to bleed uncontrollably. They were unable to give him transfusions because he had thin blood, and so a couple days later, he died.
It makes me sick to my stomach that this unnecessary procedure is still so commonly done without parents being warned of the risk. Not only is there a risk of bleeding, but babies have died from shock because of the pain. There is no medical evidence to support that circumcision is healthier in the long run, only a convenience to easier cleaning.
Because I started this group to raise awareness, and simply encourage people to educate themselves, I wanted to bring up this important health issue. I know that I had no trouble deciding NOT to circumcise my son Soren. Anyone else have thoughts?
