Humidifiers: Are you poisoning your child?

The first thing I do when one of my children starts getting sniffly is to get out the humidifier, and with a daughter in the first year of preschool, that thing is out A LOT. My mom used one when my siblings and I were small; doctors have recommended them to me for coughs and cold; and they've always seemed to work. But now doctors are cautioning that they may not only NOT be working, but they may also be harmful as well. Great.

In a recent article in Pediatrics journal, doctors found the use of humidifiers could cause lung problems in children. Beyond the risk of burns from the old steam-producing versions, doctors say humidifiers can spread germs, mold, and toxic metals.

"So you can imagine in a humidifier that those bacteria, those molds may be growing as well, and what you're doing is you're dispersing them into the air," Dr. Erwin Gelfand, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at National Jewish Health, said in a recent NPR interview.

Of course, there are all those instructions included with the humidifiers about how to clean them and how we're supposed to use distilled water, but when was the last time you cleaned yours? And used distilled water? I'm usually digging my humidifier out while half asleep in the middle of the night, so seeking out distilled water isn't going to happen.

What's more, doctors say they really don't do anything to help a cold anyway.

"There's a lot of old wives' tales about humidified air and how beneficial it is, because I think everybody thinks that if you have humidified air, it's easier to breathe," Dr. Gelfand said. But he noted that the best humidifiers are already attached to our children's faces -- their noses.

"That's why we go through the nose. We have the hairs in the nose filter out, you know, large particles, and we do humidify the air before it goes down into the lung."

It's going to be a hard habit to break, I have to admit. I can't imagine nursing my toddler daughter through a cold without one. But this information is disturbing enough to me that I'll try the next time she gets one ... which will be all too soon I'm sure.

Do you use a humidifier to treat your children's colds? Will this new information change that?

My gramma used one on me when I was little. I also used it w/ my 2 oldest daughters till the Dr. told me it does more harm than good. Now, whenever the kids are feeling sniffly I give them a nice warm bath & fresh bedding. Seems to do the trick! (:

Kind of Sally. It's the warmth that breeds the bacteria.

We used vaporizers. Is that the same thing? We only ever used them once a cold was set in. We put vicks or camphor or eucalyptus in the medicine container and it helped everyone breathe.

I use to use them all the time. I wouldn't go a day without running the humidifier. I would clean them weekly, use all the right water, and put them away in boxes to keep dust out when not in use. Then I started to think about it. Why is it that every time my kids get sick, they get a sinus infection? So I stopped using them one year about 8 years ago. NO MORE INFECTIONS!!! So now I use the steaming bathroom with essential oils, use herbs, and take vitamin D3 liquid form and acidolphilus. No more sicknesses and never another sinus infection. We never go to the doctor, Sicknesses are over within a few days and no worries any longer. I sold all my humidifiers. I would definitely listen to the article. Doctors rarely know anything about how to keep us healthy. Find a good herbalist or start studing herbs yourself. Doctors are good for broken arms, major injuries and dying situations.

I've heard that warm humifiers are the ones that are not good. They are the ones mostly responsible for the mold. I put towels on the window sils to soak up any water moisture. I clean it out daily when I use it as well. We us the cool mist humidifiers and I believe they help me and my son breathe a little better and help me sleep through the night when I can't breathe through my nose. I think you also need to make sure the room you are using it in has been dusted and cleaned really well too. I like the ones you can use the vicks vapor pads in.. it helps too. Also Vicks Vapor Rub.

I find the smell of tea tree oil a bit too much to take if in large doses. I prefer to use it as an anti-sceptic over bruises, bites and scratches :-)

I've used them. We also used eucalyptus oil. I used tea tree a few times.....wouldn't that kill any bacteria?? I would think so.

Payal. You don't have to use a humidifier to have steam inhalation. This remedy has existed far longer than the invention of "humidifiers".
See my post above for what I do, it works, is more "natural" and no need for a machine.
:-)

I have used them so often for my little daughter's colds. And the doc also prescribes only steam inhalation most of the time and no cold meds. Now this post is quite scary, I say! Def. can't ignore it! Ok, so give me some other option atleast? Please!

the older ones you can't take apart, the compartment for water is built in.

Never used one. I just shut the door in the small bathroom and run a hot shower = LOTS OF STEAM :o) Also I would at the same time burn eucalyptus oil!
Way cheaper!!!
