Peggy, I have lots of ideas that I did with my daughter that I can give you if you are looking to help her learn and have fun. Just email me and let me know what areas she needs to catch up in. The key is to make it a game so it catches her attention and only work in 5-10 minutes slots so she doesn't get bored.

That is a good idea. We have started what I cal "Autumn Fridays" which she basically chooses whatever she wants to learn about on MOnday and on Friday we do as much as she wants whether it be a project, art,reading, or looking up info online. She loves learning about animals and bugs and while I was pregant she was only interested in birth...lol.

We also started reading longer books. So far we have read Charlottes Web, Dr. Doolittle, and we are working on Stuart Little. I love revisiting these books from when I was young :)

Our daughter's not reading on her own yet, although she can count, add and subtract pretty well. What we have been doing is reading longer books to her, including Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, and a great book based on Chinese folklore we just finished called "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon". I think the longer story-lines are good for developing memory and narrative, and many of these longer children's books are a good foundation for English literature in general.

If you want to get her accelerated, I would pick some areas that schools are not going to cover, so that she won't be so bored later. Special science or history topics based on library books and local museums? Music or dance classes? These are things that the child can continue at their own level to supplement school once they start.

Yes! He sounds very much like my dausghter. She is reading and can also add simple numbers like you posted. She amazes me but I feel like I can not share too much with anyone outsideof family. I have a brother who is on the autism spectrum so I can also relate to you there. He is now 16 though. Send me a message and I will give you my email address...Also, you can friend me on FB. Maybe we can swap resources and such and share stories and ask/answer questions when they arise. I hate that they can't start school until almost 6...I worry that she will be so bored and feel left out.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING! I hate to ask this question amongst friends--- I don't want to seem like I'm bragging.

I have TONS of challenges with my 3 year old twins-- autism, hearing loss, dyspraxia, auditory processing problems, sensory integration problems, major hypotonia---- my son is in OT and speech and my daughter is in OT, PT, speech, and private PT and speech outside of school hours....

But academically??????? Part of my son's autism is really fascinating. have you seen the movie Rainman?

My son can now read in English and Hebrew, add small amounts (1 plus 2, 2 plus 3, etc), write the English and Hebrew alphabets, and today he wrote his first sentence.

His twin is a bit more normal academically.... she can't write and can't read Hebrew and can't add. But she can read English.

We're not homeschooling--- the twins are in preschool every morning. Having said that, I like to do workbooks with my son while my daughter is in physical and speech therapy-- it's a nice activity to keep him occupied and he enjoys it.

2 more years until we start kindergarten and in the kindergarten in the school we'll be sending to, they do the alphabet and beginning reading. yikes. So I'm at a loss. Maybe we can put our heads together! I don't want to slow him down, but I don't want him doing multi-variable calculus by kindergarten either. :)
