olivia will not clean her room. I can put her in there and she will throw all her toys in to the hall way or tell me to clean it

I go in there with Adrian and we do it together. I pick up a toy and he has to tell me where it goes. When he gets it right I tell him he's awesome and he gets to put it in its proper place. it takes a while if the room is really messy. But I'm a stay at home mom of one so I have the time for this sort of approach. A working mom or one with more than one child might not.

Making it a game is a great idea but honestly sometimes that just isn't enough. Cleaning up an entire room can seem quite overwhelming for a 2 1/2 year old. Break it up into smaller tasks. For example rather than say "go clean your room," try "pick up all the blocks." Then follow with the next task, "put away all the baby dolls." Praise after each successfully completed task. My oldest quickly learned the importance of cleaning when I told him that whatever was left on the floor when the timer went off would go to my room and he couldn't play with any of it.

I make a game out of it, and I also help my daughter with the clean-up. We will sing songs and race to see who can pick up their type of the toy the quickest. :)

It's true what Leanne says....most people will say to make a game out of it! I think at this age, that is what they are all about...wanting to play a lot!
