My 1 year old on has had a rough start to his second year of life. He's caught 2 diarrhea bugs and has had diarrhea for almost 2 weeks now (with a little break last weekend). In the beginning he was eating the toast, bananas, and applesauce but over the last day he's not really eaten anything. He's nursed about 4 times a day which means he's getting SOMETHING but he's also gone back to taking 3 naps a day and is sleeping 10-11 hours at night. Should I be concerned about all the sleeping and not a lot of eating?

Boy is this stuff going around!! YUCK!  My little one caught a stomach bug right after the first of the year and we dealt w/ vomit for about 36 hours and then he went straight into large loose poo dipes...which lasted for about 2 weeks.  Keep an eye on his wet dipes should have 4-6 (I believe) a day.  If he wears sposies you may want to put something (like a piece of old t-shirt or an old wash cloth) in his dipe so you can tell if he's wet (those sposies really soak it up and make it had to tell sometimes)  And I totally agree w/ the yogurt suggestion or any other probiotic. His poor little system is probably completely void of those good bacteria that usually live in the gut.  I had to use a syringe to give my little guy his yogurt...but what ever works.  Ohh and just so you know breast milk is very good at hydrating your little one...the lac consult I talked to told me it's better than pedylite (yay breast milk!!)

My daughter had this bug over the holidays and our doctor also recommended trying Gatorade if they won't drink Pedialyte. Try making it as cold as possible. My daughter would eat yogurt (the YoBaby kind), so you might try that as well. She ended up wanting to nurse more than normal, but anything to get something in that tummy. I hope that you start to turn the corner soon!

My daughter had a stomach bug, so I will pass on the information that I got from the doctor. First, I would call the pediatrician's office to get some advice (I'm paranoid like that!) If he is still producing wet diapers, then he should be ok. With diarrhea, dehydration is a concern, so you could try to give him some Pedialyte as well as the nursing. If he won't drink from a cup, you can give it to him with a medicine dropper. I hope that helps (and that he feels better soon!)
