Sippy cup problems

My daughter just turned 1 last week. I have been trying to get her to take a sippy cup for the last few weeks, but have been unsuccessful. The main problem is that she doens't understand that she needs to tip up the cup to get to the liquid. She is still lying down when she drinks from a bottle. I've tried a few different kinds, including the cups with straws, but she just chews on the straw.

We were not in her life for the first 11 months (she's adopted) so I'm not sure if her first foster mother introduced cups at all. I just had my first child in August 08, so I'm a little lost on the regular development between 6 and 11 months, since I've never expierenced it.

Any sugguestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Each child is different and unique. My oldest went through all the stages from bottle, sippy, to cup. My youngest son was only on the sippy for about two weeks. My daughter is now 1 and we have been wondering when we should start her. With all of them I made the decision I was taking the bottle away so we chose a day and then there weren't any more bottles. The longest any one of my four kids went was a day. Nicholas refused at first but when he got thirsty enough he tried. You better expect a mess. If you don't want to do it that way try giving it to them in the bath. Then there is no mess and they learn to tip the right way. I know we never let them walk the house with one because it was just a bad habit to break. No matter what you do it will all work out. Good Luck.

My son refused to drip out of a sippy cup also.  He will try to drink out of a regular cup only.  I have been trying for about a month to get him to use a sippy cup but it is NOT working at all.  We may just skip the sippy cup altogether and move to a cup.

My daughter had the same problem with not being able to hold it up. I've always used the Playtex nurser bottles, so she didn't have to hold the bottle up in order to get anything out because there wasn't any air in the bottle. She would drink out of the cup if I held it for her. I was using Avent cups with the soft top, but then switched to Gerber. I'm not sure what it's called, but it's bent a little. She drank out of it by herself the first time. It's still the only cup she can drink out of. I wish I started with that cup. I guess because it's bent, she doesn't have to hold it up quite as much, but she understands now to hold it up when it gets low. I highly recommend the cup! I have tons of Avent cups that I got as gifts, but I still went out and got a couple more of the Gerber ones.

My son turned 1 on Jan 9th.  We started him at 8 months with the Nuby sippy cups because they have a silicone spout.  I tried to introduce a harder spout sippy cup, but he just didn't get it for a while.  I finally put something he really likes to drink into the sippy, and he wanted it so much that he learned to tip the sippy up.  I would try the Nubby sippy cup first and let her get use to it, then step up.  Give her time, it will come.

My son turned one Jan 16th and a week before we started the sippy cup. I use the Gerber double handle. When he first started this is what I did. He would only get a bottle in the morning and one at night, sippy cup during the day. And when I first gave him the sippy cup I laid him on his back and handed it to him. He sucked like it was a bottle so it came out fast , he cough the first couple times, but then he got the hang of it. After a week I took away the morning bottle. After another week I took away the night bottle. Now that's all he uses is the sippy cup. So try laying her on her back and give her the sippy cup, like I said it will come out faster then a bottle but they will learn and get use to it. After a couple weeks she will start tilting her head back on her own.

p.s. I also leave the sippy cup on the floor in the living room so when ever he is thristy he just grabs and drinks or just play with it (that way they can get the feel of it). Hope this helped..Good luck

hiya, my daughter turned 1 on the 18th jan, she doesn't drink out of her cup either, instead she just throws the water I put in it on the floor lol.....she enjoys her bottles too much, which is fine as she is getting enough fluids that way, I try and give her her cup at every meal time, just to get her used to it, eventually I think she will get the gist of it :)

My son started drinking from a sippy cup at 9 months and the best one that I found to work was the one made by Nuby that didn't have any handles on it. He finally got the hang of it. All it took was me holding him with the cup.

Try holding it for her and she will finally realize that in order to get anything out of the cup that that is what she has to do. I also talked to him, telling him that he needed to tip it and he caught on.

Hang in there, she will catch on before you know it.

My son will not take a sippy cup either.  He turned 1 on Jan 15th.   He will drink from a cup, with our help.  So we are going to skip the sippy cup!  There's nothing saying they need to use one!  The only kind of "sippy" he will use is from Nuby.  It's got a silicone spout so it's soft like a bottle.  I use them when we go out and a cup isn't an option.

We are trying to teach him about tipping his head back too.  I will lift up his head gently from under his chin when he is drinking.  Also I will drink from one of his cups so he can see what to do.  I usually put a little bit of water in his cup and let him play with it.   A few times he's figured it out on his own.  Let her play!
