Hi! i don't think you need to worry yet. My daughter turned one on Jan 8, and she doesn't say much of anything. She says "DaDa" and definitely means it. Her other two words are "this" and "that". She can sign "more" and "all done". She lifts her arms to be picked up, she can shake her head to tell me yes or no. She speaks in babbling sentences using gestures and voice inflection even though she is making no sense...it's almost like she knows what she's saying or something. She started walking when she was about a week and a half away from her birthday. I have learned (I have a background in Early Childhood Ed) that when babies are working on one area of development, they slow down in others. I also recently saw a clip on Good Morning America about baby sign, and they said babies generally do really great at signing around 14 months and they also added that that time (14m) was generally about a month before they can really start to talk. That statement made me feel better!

My son turned one on January 23rd and he only says mama and dada. He mostly says mama. He is very talkative but it is still only babbling. I wouldn't worry. If you are still concerned at 18 months make a list of the words your sons says and bring it to the doctor at the well baby checkup.

Don't worry, your son is doing wonderfully. My son says hi, momma, dada, and nine but he doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason behind when he says them and I am waiting for more sense to come from his word.

All children are different.
My daughter turned 1 Jan 25th and she only really says "dada" still.
She is saying "da" for dog, and she only says Mom when she is mad.

Hey! My lil guy just turned one on the 28th and he is quiet the talker. He says Dada, Daddy, Momma, Nana, Dog, Duck, Ball, Book, No (of course), Up, Down. Also, and these are my favorites: I'm done and please. Of course he growls alot too, haha.

She says "mama" "dada" "baby" "abby" (after abby cadabby on sesame street) "dog" (sounds like og) and "pretty" (dit-ty) I don't know about anyone else but I'm looking forward to the first time she says "i love you mommy" :)
Actually I read somewhere that talking later is a sign of intelligence. I don't know if it's true or not but anything that says that our little miracles are as smart and beautiful as we all know they are is ok by me!

My son just turned one on Jan. 3rd, he is saying Momma, Dad, baba (for his bottle), always saying "whats that or whats his" and he just said "car" for his little walker. It always seems he wants to say more.
I thought he would have been saying more...but to each his own.

My daughter turned one on 1/7..she can say dada, mama, and doggy (sounds more line awgie) and she tries to sing by saying letter sounds but no words. She does use a lot of nonverbal queues such as waving hello and bye and she can ask for milk in sign language.

my son (Jan 8th) only says a few things. Although he does say mama, that is the only thing he really says consistently. I have heard him say cookie, dada, ga-ma, ba (referring to our dog whose name is Belle), kitty, but these words are rare and I generally can't get him to say *anything* when I want him to.

My daughter( Jan. 4th) started with duck then to mama now its dada everything! I think it is great to hear dada even when she is talking to the dog! I think they all go at a different speed and I am sure mama is around the corner!

My daughter turned 1 on January 26th and has a few words (mama, da-dee, ball, bath, cookie, doggie,go go go, hot, baby) in addition she also signs. She is picking up the signs very very quickly. She signs "more", "milk", "ball", "book", "eat" and "sleep" I have found these to be very helpful. You can learn all kinds of signs on the internet.
That said, all babies develop at different rates and you will hear that first MaMa and it will be music to your ears!

Use sign language! There is a lot of evidence to show that babies can produce sign language earlier than spoken language- they have better control over their hands than their tongue muscles to produce sounds. Check out "Signing with Your Baby" by Joseph Garcia and a DVD series "Signing Time". My baby has a signing vocab of around 20 words and she is learning new ones everyday. Her spoken vocab is 5-10 words. I have many friends who used sign with their children and it helps to ease their frustration b/c they can get their thoughts across. She can tell me when she is hurt, or hungry, or tired, or wants a book or ball... it is wonderful.

My boy turned one Jan 23rd. He can say mama, dada, bye bye, hiiii, cup, up, dog, book, ball, baby, please, more, and others. I make it a point to constantly label items that he comes into contact with. For example, if he is looking or pointing at his cup, i will keep repeating CUP. Once his brain processes it, he attempts to form the word with his mouth. This way, he learns to associate words with objects. It becomes most rewarding when he lables an item when I least expect it. Reading and talking to your baby is the best way to expand vocabulary.....I am a witness. It realllllly works. Also, I have once read(I am a book-a-holic) that babies have growth spurts not only in weight/height, but also in development. So, if your baby is concentrating on mastering his woddle, he wont speak much. Once he gets walking under his belt, the words will flow! Or, vice versa. So be patient with him, keep reading and talking to him!

My little boy turned 1 on Jan. 15th. He's been saying mama and dada since he was about 7 months old. More recently he's added duck, quack, bye-bye, ball and kitty. I don't think it's unusual though for a baby to still not be saying alot when they turn one. If your pediatrician isn't concerned, I'd just give it some more time. I'm sure he'll be jabbering in no time.
