I have never felt inclined to spend a tonne of money on the 1st birthday, as I think the 5th is most memorable ( i still remember mine, at mc d's with all my family and friends). Our daughter is 1 on Jan 15, so we will be heading to the beach, I will spread the word, maybe even post invites. If everyone shows up, fine, if it's just my partner, baby and I, that's absolutely fine too. I just want a nice day (or weekend) at the beach. We'll be taking a picnic, but I don't think a cake is necessary, I mean, come on, a fresh fruit salad is just as yummy to my daughter.

My daughter was born on January 1st. We're going to have a party in our church basement for her. I've picked ladybugs as a theme because they're girlie and there won't be petobismol pink EVERYWHERE. Don't get me wrong, I like pink, but some of the decorations out there are hideous!
I'd say decide if you want it to be small and personal or if you want a decent amount of people there. Then let that determine where you're going to have it. And for a theme pick something to do with a nickname that you have for him, or the traditional 1st birthday decorations.
For food either do sub sandwiches and stuff to go with that, or Spaghetti, garlic bread and salad(that's what we're doing because I found out I can feed a decent amount of people on only $40).

at 1stwishes.com are alot of good themes to choose from.. my daughter was born on january 22 and im planning something big for her because the first year was very important to me and my husband because when a baby is born a parent is born too. so thats why i will celebrate it huge so that we can share all the experience we had with the family. the theme i chose was a caterpillar and butterfly party.

My son will be 1 on Jan 1st and we decided to go to a local park an host a birthday Olympics party. Granted we're in AZ so going outside is an option for us, thank goodness cause me house is not party friendly. We're just going to have games like a 3 legged race, egg run, musical chairs, etc to keep all the older kids busy. This way I don't have to buy specific plates and decorations. We also are starting a family tradition to help make his birthday special since it's on New Years Day. The day after X'mas we are taking off the decorations on the tree and redecorating it with birthday stuff to make it a birthday tree. I'm putting party hats and streamers on it, we'll put a photo ornament each year and I'll make an ornament each year commemorating his party theme. Hope he grows to love it.

What a fantastic idea to make your son's Birthday Special every year. I'm sure your son will love this every year as he gets older, as it will high light his Birthday as a seperate fab occasion after Christmas, instead of it being eclipsed by Christmas and New Year, which is normally what happens to children born in December and January. Well done for coming up with such a unique idea :0)

Thanks for asking the question. I found it while getting ready to ask it myself. Keni will be 1 on Jan. 26th. There is an indoor waterpark near our town and I was thinking of getting a suite for a night and inviting family (made up of older children and adults) to celebrate in room and swim in park. Afterwards parents can relax and enjoy the suite for the night. NO CLEAN UP!! Good Luck with your party and most importantly enjoy! This party is for you mostly as the little one won't remember. I call it the 1st Giving Birth Day!!

My daughter will be one on the 21st, being in New England with snow I think we will do a winter themed party. We will only have grandparents and a couple close family friends. With my first daughters birthday (April) we had an outdoor "Lil cupcake" party and still kept it small and around HER naps so she was happy and had fun, that's all that really matters! Hope you have fun, enjoy it!!

My daughter has the same birthday!  Have a great one!  Kristina

Connor likes yo gabba gabba or the wiggles and barney. I think we're just going to have cake and ice cream. Just us and our 2 boys and the baby. We might have the grandparents over also but I'm not sure yet.

My son will be 1 on the jan 1st. we're having a party on the 2nd or 3rd and its pirate themed because i saw a really cool 3D pirate ship cake a the grocery store bakery and i already bought all the plates and stuff, but then a company sent me a magazine of 1st birthday party themes and there was a rubber ducky theme. Drayton's favorite toy is his collection of rubber duckies, so that made me kinda disappointed becuz that theme would match his personality a lot better lol.

We are doing a Yo Gabba Gabba themed party for my daughter's bday on Jan 22. We have a small townhouse so it will be a tight squeeze with our immediate family and close friends but it will be too cold to do anything outback (where we have plenty of room). We might do family on the Saturday and friends on the Sunday to make it less crowded.

I'm doing Sesame Street for Emilys party. She loves Elmo. I'm going to get her a separate cake so she can put her hands in hers and make a mess. I always thought that was so cute. But I can't really think of anything else, she's too young to do a whole lot and she won't remember it anyway. But good luck, I'm sure whatever you do your child will be happy with it.

Thank you all! I am still debating! He has been through so much in one year I wanted to do something extra special for him! Just dont have a whole lot to go on since its Jan and he has developmental issues! But renting the church gym is a start! Thanx for all the advice and the theme if we went on what he watched it would be NCIS or sports from his daddy but to make it a babys bday we will stick to the whole 1st bday theme like the other 3 did! LOL

Joseph will be having his first birthday party on January 16th. We are doing a Handy Manny theme. Does your child like any specific show or movie? Joseph LOVES Handy Manny which is why we are trying to do the party around the show. We have had to do a lot on our since there is not a lot of Handy Manny stuff out there yet. We are having it at a VFW hall because our apartment is to small for the number of people we want to invite. We are inviting close friends and family. The little kids will be out numbering the adults:). I really think whatever you decide to do your son will enjoy himself. Remember the day is for your son. Don't stress about making anyone else happy.

I'm planning on getting his pictures done that day and just cake this year...I know for me he has his naps. So pizza and cake and grandparents and aunt and cousins small. I don't have the room for a big party and I figure next year we can do more. Swimming at a public pool could be fun and less expensive but if you want to celebrate with cake then you would need to rent a room at a community pool or invite people to your house,

my son was born on jan 4. i do not want to have a big party with all the family, cuz his baptisim, with all the family, did not go too smoothly....so i will probably be taking him 2 chuck e cheese with my husband. just the 3 of us.....

My little girl was born on Jan 17th and I'm going to have her a disney themed party. Maybe you should give him a party off of what he likes. For example, Cars, Handy Manny, Mickey Mouse, etc that always seems to work. If not you van never fail with the cake I'm sure he won't even mind a specfic theme once he see's that. Good Luck

My problem is going to be that we have so many friends from different circles. I don't want a house full of 30 people but if I invite one or two families from one circle, I will feel pressure to invite everybody from that circle.

This being my first child, I am also not used to having a house full of toddlers and cruisers all over the place. It overwhelms me very quickly.
