I have an 18mth old who weight 23lbs at her 18mth check up and the doctors were worried. She's a picky eater but loves juice. They told me to take her off the juice and only give her 2% milk..she hates it!..i've tried but is at the point of frustration. She loves fruits and cheese (her favourite..she even has her "I love cheese, i love juice" song she sings everytime i open the fridge. Anyone else has a picky eater?? what can i do??

My lo was only just barely 20lbs at her 18 mos apt. They checked her for celiac disease and did a bunch of tests to make sure she was absorbing nutrients from her food. IT turns out she's just skinny, your's probably is too, they'll be super models one day!

My Jan 09 son is 15.5 kg which converts to 34 pounds (95% percentile on chart) and in the 80th percentile in height. He recently had his 18 month check up and the doc said he was great. So long as their diet is not junk food, high salt or high sugar foods and they are eating then don't let it worry you too much.

Ugh, I understand!!! My lil peanut weighed 18lbs 15 oz at her 18 month appt, so she is weigh behind!!! She is a very picky eater and still wants to nurse. I would just try to introduce fatty foods. Cheeses, avocado, peanut butter on toast, eggs, etc. I would say find what she likes and keep giving her that. My baby will eat rice and avocado all day. I think we just have to remember every child is DIFFERENT!! As long as she's gaining weight I wouldn't stress too much.

My son had his 18 month appt at 20 mos. because we recently moved and I wanted to start him with a doctor that would be local for us here...anyway, at 20 months he weighs 25 lbs. and is 33 1/2 inches tall. There was no concern by our doctor, and even though he falls in the 30th percentile they said that as long as he is growing and doesn't fall below the 5th percentile they arn't concerned. Hope that helps. Don't know your whole situation, but doesn't sound like it is that bad...have you thought of talking to another physician for a second opinion? Also, my son likes the Gerber graduates flavored milks "to go" they are vanilla and strawberry flavor, but have the same nutrients as milk...I just poor them over into the sippy cups rather than use their disposable containers and straws (mostly for my own desire to keep it less messy) That worked too. If she likes yogurt there are some great full fat yogurts that I used to use too.

My son was 2'11" and 33 pounds at his 18 month check up. His doctor said he's going to be a linebacker lol I don't think that the weight should be an issue if they are proportionate with their height.

are the doctors telling you she needs to lose weight? If so, I would not listen or at least double check on it becasue my little girl weighed 23 at her 18 month check up and was only in the 30% percentile for weight. My doctor was leaning more towards she needed to gain some weight!

My daughter is 20 months and she weighs 29 lbs, and their doctors tell me that they both are healthy.. so u cant really count on that. and my daughter is picky about some stuff...try it with different things, like ranch dressing or ketchup or sumthing of that sort..it may work...best of luck..and in my opinion..shes fine

My daughter is 19 months and only weighs 19 pounds. She is definitely petite but our doctor is not worried at all. We are adding more fat in her diet - she drinks whole milk mixed with YoBaby yogurt (like a smoothie) about 3 or 4 times a day and i cook everything with butter for her. Juice is LIMITED and we give her lots of cheese, avacado, pasta, chicken, ham, veggies and fruits. She loves cheddar crackers and graham crackers and snacks a few times throughout the day. I think as long as they eat healthily, they will be fine. Perhaps your child (like mine) with be on the lean side as opposed to overweight like the majority of kids these days. Don't worry, you'll find ways to get her to gain weight. How about ice cream every afternoon??? haha:)

My daughter had always been small. Weighed 21lbs 6 oz at her 18 month check up (25th percentile for weight and 75th percentile for height). Doctor says that it is fine, since those are the percintiles she's always been in. My husband and I are both skinny and he is tall so the doc said she's just like us. She is pretty picky as well and will not drink milk. So I just load her up on cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt and I freeze milk & chocolate syrup pops. Doc knows this and says it's ok as well. Some kids just won't drink milk. We had tried EVERYTHING.

My little one was only just over 21lbs at 18 months and no-one has even mentioned a thing to us- just said weight was fine- (when she was younger she got weighed by a stupid midwife who wanted us to feed her cream instead of milk on cereal and cake as snaks to fatten her up but told our own midwife and she looked at what she ate and how her body looked and told us to ignore this advice!) she is a good eater and by no means thin but is just quite dinky and not destined for tall things- all babies are going to weigh differently dependant on their height so if yours looks okay weight wise I really wouldn't worry.

My son is almost 20 months and only weighs 22 lbs. The dr was concerned when he was a year old since he was so small he wasn't even on the chart. He's kind of a picky eater too, but has always loved milk. He used to drink 2 gallons a week! The dr told us to cut back on milk and give him more solids and since then he's started eating more and more variety, but he's still not huge. He's just a very active boy and more concerned with playing than eating. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as you try to give them a balanced diet you're doing just fine :)

I don't have a picky eater...actually it's the opposite he loves everything... at 19months he's 35lbs. My doctor said not to worry now that he is running around he'll burn it off.. I’ve already seen that he's eating smaller portions & that his weight gain has stopped at the same time the he is losing his chunky baby look :-( ... I've talked to my doc few months before when my boy was gaining all this weight and doc said not to worry as long as he is eating, is healthy, happy, the rest will take care of it self.. Oh and my first boy who is now 7 and skinny as a beanpole was the same way.... so in my opinion don't worry.. if she doesn't like milk that's fine, she's getting calcium through other sources don't force her.. if she is extreme with the juice just dilute it with water ... she'll still get what she wants but in smaller portions

He told me to keep her on homo milk and just keep doing what we are doing as she looks great! She loves eating and snacks in between meals but she also has her days where she just doesnt want to eat. All babies really are different. Its not up to me to tell you what to do, as long as she is eating and drinking and active, you know as a mother whether your child is fine, you can tell when somethings wrong. So do what us mothers do best, care nurture and love our little ones! Good luck with everything, try new foods with her, it will be a fun experiment and i am sure u will take some super cute pics along the way!

She told me to just keep introducing different foods, especially the veggies, she won't eat them. I have her on whole milk as well. She is active and pretty healthy, so I'm not worried. Also, she was breastfed till 17 months as well.

I wouldn't worry as long as she was active, and healthy looking, not tired all the time. I am also trying to cut back on the amount she drinks before meals, it will fill her tummy too much.

My baby also ha been at the same weight (23 lbs) for about 3 months. I thought he was lactose-intolerant but as soon as I introduced full-fat cow's milk yogurt into his diet his stools firmed up and he started gaining weight. I also asked the doctor for vitamin drops to support his health and growth. I had him tested for food allergies and nothing showed up, including celiac disease. Why not try whole milk? or will she drink soymilk? They need the fats to grow body and brain at this age. I also added butter, olive oil into my baby's diet. He is picky when he is teething, but loves pancakes and rice. I added cottage cheese and extra egg into his pancakes, and sometimes I added banana. Then I cooked them in lots of melted butter. I started making him smoothies with banana and yogurt and other fruits. I stopped granola bars and dried fruit because his intestines just couldn't handle them. I made rice pudding with whole milk or soymilk, butter, brown sugar and sometimes I added a glob of yogurt on top. He isn't a big meat eater, but likes sausages and chicken. I make lots of soups and I cook the meats down until they are really soft and add lots of veggies to the soup. He's gained 2 lbs on this diet in 2 months. Remember it takes multiple tastes of a food for kids to get used to them. Put new foods in front of her when she's really, really hungry. Eat with her. Make a big deal when she tries something. Praise her for being a big girl with brave taste buds! If you put multiple things in front of her in small amounts in little bowls and let her forage, she might find some new things she likes. Remember, she will eat if she's hungry. If you give up because you think she's going to starve herself, you are mistaken. Let her leave the table hungry if she won't eat. When she comes back, put the same choices out. She'll find something to like. Believe me. Cheese and fruit isn't a bad diet, anyhow. You could support her health with a vitamin prescribed by your doctor, as I did. Try not to get frustrated. You don't want eating food to become part of a power struggle...then anorexia or obesity. Make eating fun and lighthearted. Try taking her to a farm stand or to the store to pick out some veggies and protein for a big pot of soup. (With my older child, we read the book 'Stone Soup' then we made soup and found a rock--which I washed and boiled--to put in my daughter's bowl. She was thrilled to eat all her soup so she could find the rock at the bottom.) You can add cream to the broth, too. Let her help prepare food in some way. Cooking is fun for kids this age when you can find safe ways for them to participate. Cooking is science and health! If she helps make it, maybe she'll be more enticed to eat it. There are lots of picky eaters. Very few really have a problem like failure to thrive. Take a deep breath and remember this too shall pass!

I feed my daughter a veggie with lunch and dinner before I give her anything else. She's hungry so she eats it up. I offer her all different kinds. After she eats that up then I give her whatever else we're having. She maintains a healthy weight and gets her vitamins!

Why in the world do they want her to have 2% milk instead of whole? My son was only 22 pounds at his 18 month checkup and the doctor said I need to get him to eat as many fatty foods as possible. I never give him lowfat anything. I'm not concerned about his weight, because he's just a lean little guy, completely healthy and eats a good variety of food, but he burns it off quickly.

Honey I honestly woudn't worry to much about it. All three of my kids were 28 to 30 pounds at their 18 month check ups. My son is 19 months and he weighed 30 pounds 8 ounces at his. They do say with the suger in juice it does add to the weight but it also makes them full quicker and they est less to. But all my kids thinned out and are healthy. If she doesn't like the 2% milk get her the low fat chocolate milk and I bet she drinks it. Thats what I had to do for my son and he loves it....Good luck =0)

I know your frustration, I follow him around trying to get him to eat because he hates his high chair. He tries to eat lumpy food but can't swallow it and the food he likes makes him sick, like cheese. The nurse gave me a book with information that said you can use fruit as substitute for vegetables to get fibre and cheese is good instead of milk. I would let her eat what she likes, they burn calories running around and it's good that she likes healthy and nutritious food.

Also - vaccinations can hurt your child's appetite. Specifically MMR because in the combo vaccine the measles will settle in the tummy and cause them to not want to eat. Keep an eye out for these types of things immediately escalating following shots. Personally, I won't vaccinate my children any more because of this problem and others. I am seeing more and more reactions, and more severe reactions all the time. I met just last week two random new people - in person - who's children when from perfect to vegetative within 12 hours of their shots (one 12 month girl and one 18 month boy) But there are many reactions that are not so horrible. Just thought I should mention it and give you something to think about.

My son weighed 21 pounds at his checkup. She is fine. Give her pediasure and high fat foods to gain weight. I recently found a chocolate mouse recipe that was made from AVACADOS! Perfect for the picky eater who needs to fatten up. Avacados are one of the best foods to give any kid. I used to just sweeten it with some pear juice. Try juices that have veggies in them. Just make sure you give juice in a cup. And if they want her to gain weight - why not WHOLE milk? Try whole. But like I said - nothing to worry about at all IMO. My kids all weighed 17-18.5 pounds at a year and 23/24 pounds by 2. They are fine. My oldest is going to be 9 in about a week.

I am having the same problem. We took Joseph to the doctor for his 18 month well visit and he lost weight. The doctor had us go for blood tests just to be safe. He had us stop all snacks and only give him three meals. We had started giving him baby food because he wasn't eating. the doctor said too stop the baby food and to stop giving him food choices. If he does not eat what we made for breakfast then he doesn't eat until lunch. and the same for dinner. It has been very hard. I feel like I am starving my child. th doctor said he will not starve. When he realizes he had to eat this food he will. the more choices you give him the more of a game it is to him. He has gained 10 ounces so that is good. We have to go back in October for a weight check again. Hopefully, he will have put on enough weight that we don't have to worry anymore.

They put her 2% milk because perhaps they feel she is filling up with milk and not eating properly. My son weighs the same . They took him off milk and he has only 1 bottle of a specialised formula (paediasure) which meets all his nutritional needs and vitamins etc. He eats SOOO much better since cutting back on the milk.

I agree with several of the other mommies. My youngest son was 22 pounds and 90% for his height at his 18 month checkup. And he too is a picky eater. He is active and has a good consistent growth chart. I only let him have 2-4 ounces of apple juice with the rest of the cup water only once a day, the rest of the day he mostly gets water, but sometimes rice or soy milk. He LOVES the whole grain goldfish crackers and the yo-baby yogurt. I just keep mixing it up and eats what he wants. As long as he is eating and has one good healthy meal in a day he's fine. All babies are different and some are just smaller than others. Dont worry unless your baby seems unable to eat. If there is a variety of food available he'll eat at some point. And he may be so active he's burning it all off. He'll gain weight eventually.

I'm very lucky though my son will eat almost anything! My daughter on the other hand is 6 months and she is picky! We have 19 mo old boy/girl twins. Boy weighs about 26 lbs, girl weighs about 22. She eats more than he does. Dr thinks they are just right! We (parents) are not big people. They are both healthy as can be and very active. They eat everything and drink only milk and water - never any juice. We've used 2 tips from their Dr. 1) Most toddlers drink too much and don't eat enough. They should get most of their calories from food. Just keep trying different things until you find stuff they'll eat. 2) Give them food first and only give them milk at the end of the meal, that way they'll eat and not fill up on drink. Ours get milk with 3 main meals of day and water for all snacks and throughout day. If she loves juice, give her fruit for snacks along with water. She's getting calcium through cheese, also try the Yo Baby yogurt with fruit and veggies - the twins love that.

My daughter is 19 months and weighs 23lb (10kg). While I was worried that she had only gained a few since the last visit 6 months ago, the doc said it was ok as long as the graph on her chart keeps rising. I feed her all sorts of things; pumpkin, sweet potatoes, rice, irish potatoes, beans, plantain, basically all the foods that the rest of us eat. In between meals I give her soy rice porridge, yoghurt, fruits and lots of water. She's a very active girl and so I am not worried about her small frame. Her father and I are small so its only logical that she's not gaining much.

My son is also having issues gaining weight. At his 18 month check up he fell just below 20 lbs. We noticed a decline in his weight gain just after we started to wean him from breast milk at 9 months due to my returning to work. He has never lost weight, but putting it on has been very hard. He eats breakfast, lunch, and at least 2 snacks at daycare. I give him a small snack for the long ride home (almost an hour) to hold him till dinner is ready. Some nights he eats every thing in sight and others, I can't get him to eat two bites. Just keep trying and listen to the doctors. My son is taking after his uncles who had the same issue when they were his age and today they are all tall and at healthy weights.

You don't mention whether she was breast fed or bottle fed prior earlier on....I mention this because many breast fed babies (like mine) are so-called "banana babies" - tall and skinny. My son was 24 1/2 lbs at 18 mos, but also 35" tall. He is fairly thin, but eats well. I'm not sure why you wouldn't be giving her whole milk though - I've kept my son on whole milk - probably at least until 2 - to help him put on some pounds. I haven't really tried to "fatten" him up because I want him to learn to eat healthy and he is in near the 50th percentile, which is fine. They would like to see them at or above the 25th percentile, but a little below that is fine as long as they are gaining weight over time (and don't have any other adverse symptoms). It also depends what comparison growth chart they're using especially if she was breast-fed - these kids generally develop different eating habits and thus gain weight more slowly (but are healthier in the end). Good luck!
