Complications with birth

I just wondered how many others had complications with childbirth. My labor began on its own, with my water breaking at 2:30 in the morning. I arrived at the hospital at 3:00 am and at 7:00 pm I had only dilated to 5cm. They had given me my epidural around 2.5cm because I was progressing so slow and in so much pain. They made a decision to deliver my daughter by c-section around 7:15 pm because I was not making much progress and they discovered that she was on a nerve which was causing me too much pain that not even the meds could take the edge off. Half an hour later my daughter was born, not breathing. It was the scariest thing I've ever experienced in my life and I still get emotional when I think of that moment. All I remember was hearing alot of people rushing into the room and the sound of air being pumped into her lungs. I had a relatively normal pregnancy and could not understand why I had not heard my baby cry yet. It seemed like an eternity and no one would tell me what was happening, although I hadn't asked anyone because I was intently listening to the sounds in the room and waiting to hear that first cry. All I could do was lie there and pray that she would be okay. My sister was by my side, holding my hand, watching them work on her and trying not to let me see that she was crying, even though I could tell she was. Finally I squeezed the question out to my sister and asked her what was wrong with my baby. By the time I asked, she was breathing and they were bundling her up to take her to the nursery to be observed for the next 12 hours. Not until about a week later did I learn that she had gone without oxygen for 5 minutes due to having a very large amount of mucous lodged in her airway. I am thankful every day that she is here with me and I do not take one moment of her life lightly. It is a difficult process to getting a baby into the world perfectly. She is developing normally and is the picture of health for a 6 month old. I just wondered how many other mothers experienced any complications with their baby's birth and please include how they are doing today. I am grateful to God for saving our babies lives. :)

I appreciate all your stories, ladies! Wow it's amazing what some of us go through bringing a new life into the world! I think if I ever have any more children I'm just going to have a scheduled c-section, even though those are not guaranteed to have less problems. I just think that I'd be too scared to lay in bed all day in labor and not know if my baby was in some kind of distress. The hospital I delivered her in is not equipped very well for babies born with complications, but I was very impressed how well they handled her birth. Her first Apgar score was 0. I'm forever going to be grateful to the team of nurses and doctors who worked hard to make sure she did not die. We are blessed mothers who have experiences we will never forget and never take for granted how valuable our babies' lives are!! Thank you for sharing your stories! They are all very touching and heartwarming!

hi i had a simmilar birth.

i went 12 days over and went into hospital to be indued on the 26th january 09 at 8am, i had had my first tablet thing at around 10am and light contractions started around mid-afternoon, by about 9pm the contractions were getting umbearable and 2minutes appart but i was only 1cm dialted so i had pethadine and a bath,

by 12am i was in so much pain i screamed 4 a epidural by this thin i was 4 cms so they took me over to labour ward and called my parnter

after the epidural al was fine and by 2am i was fully diatled but my babys head failed to drop so at 7am i had to sign form to say if the forceps didnt work i would hav to have a emergancy csection.

i was taken to theatre and the forceps were unsucessfull as my daughters head started to swell so they prep'd me for the c section ,

it took agessss they had to push her head back up and found it difficult to get her out after a long while she was delivered and started to cry straight away. they gave her my partner and i didnt see her for the 1st hour of her life :(

we are all well now and ready to start back at work,

when i have my 2nd baby i dont wont to have to be induced as whilst in hospital all my ward were induced and ALL ended up have emergancy c sections .......

My pregnancy was rough for the first 5 months...was so sick in and out of the hospital. My doctor broke my water because I was in so much pain and my son being so low...I got there at 3pm and by 9:30pm I was almost dilated and ready to push. I was holding him 30 min. later. After about 10 hours later we were told that my son was being transferred to an NICU in Jax (we lived in Daytona Beach) because they thought he had a seizure. After three weeks in the NICU he was able to go home. It ended up being an Intra Ventrical Hemorrhage...equiv. to an adult stoke. Very scary, but he is doing great now and hitting every milestone that he should. Doctors said that we wouldn't know the extent of the damage until he got older.
Keep your head up and stay positive.

Mine is long, but a lot happened! Sorry....

I was sick as all could be the first 3 1/2 months, after that, I kept getting infections one after another.

We went to the hospital on the 11th of Jan. around 11 p.m. thinking my water had broke. They did a test to see if it had or not, and it hadn't yet. They sent me home. The morning of the 12th, I woke up in terrible pain in my left kidney area. I called my doctor and she told me to come and get checked out, it sounded like I had another infection.

I went in at around 11 a.m. on the 12th, and at noon, my doctor told me that I was being admitted, that I had an infection, and on top of that, a kidney stone! I got sent down to labor and delivery to be watched and to get antibiotics running through me to kill the infection. She also told me that once they got a hold on the infection, they were going to induce me that Thursday.

Tuesday the 13th, around 12:30 a.m., I woke up in excrutiating pain in my kidney again, I was trying to pass the kidney stone, which was 2.5 cm! They started giving me several different pain killers, none of which helped. They finally put me on a morphine pump/drip. My doctor came down later that day and checked me out again, and told me that instead of Thursday, they were going to induce me the next day, Wednesday.

Wednesday morning at around 12:30 a.m. again, woke up in the same pain, only worse because now my contractions had started and I was dialated to a 2.5! They started the multiple pain killers again, none of which helped again! Around 6 a.m. the doctor on duty, (my doctor was off) decided to start the epidural because of all the pain I was in.

Everything went fine until around 3 p.m. At that time, the epidural started to wear off, and my contractions were getting worse, but I had quit dialating! They decided to break my water, start pitocin, and give me a nerve block for the pain. By 4 I was at a 10 and started pushing.

Around 4:30 p.m., I started having a hard time breathing, they put oxygen on me, but it wasn't helping. The doctor on duty checked me and said we needed to get the baby delivered because it sounded like I had pneumonia.

By 5:45, my daughter started to crown and was just a couple of pushes away when the doctor on duty came running in and told me to stop pushing, that there was another baby he was delivering was having problems. So I had to lay there for about 20 mins, with my daughter crowned and not push! He finally came in and finished delivering my baby. She came out screaming, which was a great sign, her cord was around her neck, and tied in a true knot behind her head.

She was healthy and happy, nothing wrong with her at all. I ended up not having pneumonia, it was because they had given me the nerve block a little high to take out the kidney pain, that it started to affect my lungs. 3 weeks after she was born, I had to go to a specialist doctor and have lithotripsy surgery (stone blasting) for the kidney stone, and found out that I also had one in my right side, but it was small enough I should pass that one on my own. I did about 2 months later!

We are all very healthy. My daughter is happy and healthy, and I love her sooo much, she is my world!

I went into labor by myself, 3 days after my due date!! My contractions started at 8am and were 10 minutes apart!! After 2 hours i told my husband to call the hospital and tell them what was going on. After another hour, my contractions went from 10 to 5 minutes apart and after nearly 3 hours of this, I told my husband to call the hospital again and tell them that we were on our way!!
When I arrived at the hospital they took me in the delivery room and hooked me up to a monitor, but said I looked to good to be a woman in labor!! They then said after 15 minutes that I was a keeper because my contractions were 5 minutes apart and lasting a minute long!! ( I could have told them that!!) A midwife checked me out and said they she was going to break my waters because I was 8cm dilated!!!
After that it was getting very intense and 2 hours later i wanted to push.
After half an hour of pushing my baby was an inch from crowning, but after another 1 and a half hours she hadn't moved.
They called the doctor in, and she decided to use the vacuum because she had a big head and I just couldn't get her over the bump!!
With one push/pull her head was out, but they then told me that I needed to roll over so my chest was against the bed. At that second about 5 other midwives came running into the room, there was like 10 people in there!! With another big push/pull Abbey was out. They told me then that Abbey had her shoulder stuck in my pelvis and on top of that she was a whopping 11lbs 4oz/ 5.1kg!!! I had a third degree tear.
Abbey ended up with jaundice as well and was put under lights from Sunday through till Thursday, and it took months for the lump from the vacuum to go away, she still has a little lump there still!!
She is fine now, and so am I. I love her more then anything in the world, I couldn't imagine my life without her in ti!!

i was a week overdue, so they induced me at 7:30am... by 1pm, i was only 1.5 cm... & having the worst pain already. 5:15pm my water broke by itself, however i was only 2 cm. then at 7:30am the next morning, i was finally 5cm, & they gave me the epi. at about 10:30am, they told me i was at 10cm. i pushed for 3 HOURS without an epi.. until another doctor came in & said i needed an emergency c-section. for my c-section, they kept giving me drugs, but everything except for my pelvic area was numbing.. then they finally gave me something that numbed my pelvic area. my son was finally born at 2:32 pm. when he was born, i was half asleep from all the drugs. he had a 14inch head.. & the midwife who made me push for 3 hours came in later and said that there was no way he was going to come out by me pushing. i wanted to punch her in the face. so after 26 hours of labor, 3 hours of pushing, & a c-section later, my son was finally born.

I had a rough pregnancy I was so sick for the first 6 months and had some other complications like the baby laying on scar tissue from where my left ovary had been removed it was so painful I couldn't even move. But I made it through that and at 37 weeks showed signs of pre eclampsia so my dr. ordered that I could not return to work. I had a non stress test at almost 38 weeks and my babies heart rate would just drop when I was having contractions. I had an ultrasound and my baby was measuring small (5 lbs) so my dr. said because of the size and the heart rate dropping he wanted me induced that night so at 6pm I was induced using cervadil (don't know how to spell it) I was up in labor all night long and at 7 am my dr broke my water and started pitocin. At that time I was only 3 cm. The nurse was watching me carefully as the heart rate dropped every time I contracted and at this time that was back to back. My babies heart rate was ranging between 60-80. I got an epidural and was changing postions constantly trying to get the heart rate up and I was also on oxygen. The next time the nurse checked me I was back to 2 cm so they decided to call the dr. back for an emergency c-section. It was so scary everyone was freaking out about the my babies heart rate and I was rushed very quickly to have the c-section. They did everything so fast and then my son was born. He was healthy and crying and everything was ok with him, but he had the cord wrapped around his neck twice. He was only 5 lbs 5 ounches so he was tiny but I was so happy he was healthy. Now he is 6 months old and above average in weight and height and healthy and strong.

My labor started on its own, Water broke at about 6:30am (i honestly thought i peed lol) and i made it to the hospital at about 9am (had to wait for my mom to take and a shower and get dressed because my s/o was deployed) my labor was progressing, at 3pm i was at 4cm (when i went in I was 2) so it took about 6 hours to go 2cm, they gave me the epi and at about 6pm i felt the worst pain in my life, well they had me pushing and he was coming but they said his heart rate was dropping and wasnt coming up, they made me roll over to my left side and push that way but when i rolled over his heart rate went up but mine dropped really low, they made a quick decission to vaccume him out because they where afraid i wasnt going to made it out, so they vaccumed him out, it took 2 days before he would really cry he only squeeked, then we found out he had jaundice and he almost had to get a blood transfution.

I thank god for keeping us both safe.
