My son started crying this morning when he was trying to push his poop out. It's been harder than normal for a few days now.
We give him prunes. Is there anything else you'd recommend?

Try Pear juice.. works like a charm. And then if that doesn't work, use a thermometer and take the babys temp... thermometer works like a suppository and will push the poop out!

Quoting Nancy:

I put a little bit of corn syrup in my baby's bottle. That seems to help well enough since he started with solid foods.

Corn syrup, like honey, can be dangerous for babies younger than 12 months!  Just a word of caution...

Quoting Dawn:

Honey helps, also put the tip of a parsley stalk in oil and tease the anal hole with it and baby should poop..

Be very careful about the honey--babies should be at least 12 months old before giving them honey b/c of a toxic bacteria that may be present.

Our 11 month has also had some serious bouts with constipation--really no fun at all!

Some other moms have already mentioned these tips but we've found it helpful to cut out rice cereal completely (low in fiber) and avoid bananas and apples (they're good to have around though if you have the opposite problem!).

Increase fluid intake--offer water frequently.  We've found prune juice to be helpful.  I mix it in his morning cereal and offer it to him in a cup, in addition to water.

Physical activity helps too--give your baby lots of floor time to move and crawl.  Helps get other things moving too!

Good luck.  Talk to your ped if it continues.

Hey Tanya, Prunes are good, but not too many and prune juice is good as well. I give pear juice to my little one and that seems to help with her bowel movements. Steer clear of banana, that seems to bind them!

My daughter has alot of pooping issues like that. I reccomend giving him Prune juice, Water, apple juice... any sort of liquid really, and try to get as much into him as possible. The tummy stretches that Keisha mentioned also help alot too.

If you are really concerned, as i was, you can go to your Dr. and get a liquid laxative that is very easy on the tummy, Its called Lactulose, and can be mixed into anything you give them to eat or drink.

Constipation is never fun but it does happen, I have my children and babies drink prune juice, and an old trick is to take ivory soap and cut it in to a sliver and warm water. Get the ivory soap wet and tease the anus (DO NOT ENTER THE ANUS) just tease around the opening. This will allow the opening to have the urge to push and release, it is a natural rememedy to trick the spincter muscle. Only use Ivory soap because of its purity.

My little girl is always consitpated :( The only thing that seems to help is Purity Peaches but she also battles...Good Luck!

We know just how you feel. I found peas work well, cook them til soft and let baby pick them up and feed themselves. Kiwi fruit is also good, you can whizz it up with some water to make a sort of smoothie.

You might also consider a probiotic to help digestion. Ask at a organic grocer or health food store. My girl is 10 months, I just dip the end of my finger in the powder and let her suck it off. My husband has started using it as well now!

We give our daughter yo baby yogurt everyday and that seems to help. We also give her fruits that start with p (for poop) pears, peaches and prunes. Bananas can constipate babies.Try Gerber prune/apple juice or Gerber pear juice mixed with water. We also introduced her to the potty at 7 months, she's 10 months now, whenever it seems she is trying to go or gets crabby we put her on the potty and she is able to go, I think the seated position makes it easier. It's easier clean up too. I hope this helps.

We gave our son an ounce of prune joice mixed with an ounce of water morning and night and never fed him bananas, apple sauce, carrots, or rice. Baby massage is great especially pushing the knees into the abdomena dn rubbing the belly.

My son had really bad constipation as well, his poop sometimes even got stuck in his butt it was really sad 2 watch him push and scream cuz it hurt him. Since then he poops in his potty cuz I sat him there the first time it hurt him and after that he started pooping basically on comand whenever I sat him in the potty. I spread his butt chicks apart and also massage his belly whenever I see his having a hard time. If you're giving ur son rice cereal u should stop it right away and since he's having this problem you should only give him prune juice from now on or white grape juice if he doesn't like the prune one, that's what I've been doing and so far my baby is pooping once a day and he doesn't seem to be strugling any. Hope that helps and your lil one gets better.

My son had that too my dr said to put a little bit of Vaseline on the tip of a q-tip and put only the tip in and around the anus. It worked wonders for my son along with slighty warmed apple juice. :)

Try sugar water, apple juice, bananas baby jar food, or buy some Karo syrup and mix it with water.Works everytime. I also rub my daughters belly or take her legs and bend them at the knees and kind of help her push.
